I wish I had seen this before my implant surgery. You stress loudly and clearly the importance of being very careful about not applying pressure or any hot food or drink to the surgery area. I didn't get how important this is from my dentist. I definitely put a little pressure on the area when I ate. There was pain, but I thought a little pain wouldn't hurt. WRONG! The implant failed, had it removed today, had a bone graft, and now I know better. Very expensive mistake. Thanks again. Charles
My doctor didn't even give me any after care instructions and I had to do my own research on this. I was just told to eat soft foods like yogurt for a week or two and that I could brush normally just not to go near the implant site with the toothbrush. I have been in so much pain I haven't felt like eating much and literally been laying down 3 days straight. I read another article that said not to lay flat for the first 72 hours and keep my head elevated, but I didn't know this until yesterday. Seems not all doctors are consistent on the dogs and don'ts.
I had a cracked tooth extracted and bone graft material put in and then dental implant screw same day, and next to that a dental implant screw placed where a tooth had been missing for years. So basically 2 done at the same time, same day. I have never had so much pain in my life. Advil and vicodin did very little to control the pain. I am currently on an antibiotic which were started the day before the procedure. I am 57 years old and have some health issues. I was told the health issues shouldn't be a problem to do this procedure and that there would be some pain and discomfort for the first couple days, but this pain is worse than when I had low back surgery! I went back to the doc today and he said everything looked fine and he prescribed a medrol pack. I took the first 6 pills of the medrol pack a couple hours ago and the pain seems to be lessening a bit. But damned if I haven't been in agony since Monday. I wish I had known about the pain. The whole side of my face hurt, under my eye, in my other teeth all the way to my ear and from the upper mandible area (where the screw implants were placed), down to my lower jaw. I tried an ice pack, advil and vicodin every 4 hours as instructed and none of it helped until the medrol pack a couple hours ago. I don't know how people can say they don't have pain with these procedures. I was worried that something had gone wrong. This certainly has me thinking twice about any future implants.
