Best putting tip for me came from coach Mike Shannon, who says each golfer has one ideal ball position that allows them to aim correctly. I was missing putts left (as you were, Ali, in the video) and simply moving the ball about an inch back in my stance (farther away from the hole) has made a big difference. It might not work next time, but... that's golf!

@@markprice2225 yes, but easy for him to stand on his high horse, he has more money than a bull can sh**. I'm convinced putting mostly happens between the ears. If your confident you can make it technique almost becomes secondary. Always enjoy your videos Ali! Thanks
One thing I’ve noticed watching others is: when you take that one last look at the hole 🕳 after setting up, often times that move (of turning your head) OPENS your SHOULDERS. I now make sure to not move my shoulders (keep them square) when I turn my head to look at the hole. Even Cameron Smith focuses on SETUP, and making sure feet, knees, hips AND shoulders are square. ☝🏻
Crikey, that was like an anxiety dream I have ,where it’s incredibly difficult to tee off, never ending obstacles in my way !! Fair play for your perseverance with holing the putt.
On long putts I always do a couple of practice strokes. On shorter (15ft and in) I usually focus on getting my putter set up, look at the hole, then go.

I've putted looking at the hole for decades. First started years ago because I had the yips. I switched to left-hand low and looking at the hole and my putting improved greatly. Still not as good as it should be, but not a total embarrassment either! LOL!
I've only been chasing the ball for a short time and have attempted a good number of approaches to the putting delima and as of now I'm finding that looking at the spot i want the ball to go to, be it the hole or a spot on line to the hole, I'm getting better results vs looking at the ball as I putt. but each is on his/her own putting journey.
Yup I like to pick a target on green that represents a new hole based on if the putt is uphill or left to right break. This really helps me visualize the distance and roll the ball close to the hole on long putts.
This has been quite a big topic this week, it got me to thinking this. How many times do you take one or two practice swings, think to yourself "that's to much", then you hit the putt and it comes up short. Go with your first sense, its usually pretty damn good.
It's just gonna be hundreds of hours of practice..... I'm practicing putting a lot lately and it's definitely making a difference. It's not that thrilling to practice but you're definitely more confident with it when you play.
Absolutely! Practicing 5 foot putts is the most beneficial thing you can do! Helps you not leave putts short because your not scared of a 3 to 5 foot putt coming back. You make more putts when you are aggressive, I have never seen a short putt go in.
Exactly what ive relized while practicing putting Read up down. Read side to side. Determine how many cups left right and how many feet long short. Place ball w logo at cups left right. And stroke for the dostance only
i had a purple patch of putting but alas it has vanished, i just don't seem to be able to get it back. Yet i can putt very well on the mat at home, chalk and cheese, mat V greens.
Comedy Gold. Don't think I've ever seen a putting instructor miss so many putts! Must have been "the wind" eh! Laughs aside, this video misses the real key to Cameron Smith's putting genius - the length of time he spends visualising the putt and his imaginary line between ball and hole right before he pulls the trigger. When Ali 'shows you how it's done' he spends all of half a second in his final look at the hole (probably why he missed so many). But if you actually watch Cam Smith's win at The Open you'll see him spend a good 3-4 seconds visualising the line and seeing the putt dropping into the hole as the very last thing he does before starting his stroke. That's the key to his putting success but that point was not fully conveyed in this video. Check out the length of Cameron's 'last look' here: ruclips.net/video/Fs2WO9E9pWk/видео.html
The dude didn't make a single putt. There is actually a cut in the video at 8:13, which means he missed the final putt as well and putted it again until he made it.
When you are standing over the ball you have to believe the ball is gong into the hole before you strike the putt, if you don't it won't, how you get to that mental state is up to you. And you have to accaccelerate the putter through the ball, no exceptions.
Cam gives one last long look at the hole. I tried to do this and it seems to help with distance control. An extra long look at the hole and visualization.
“Putt a good stroke on it” - Cam. All the work is done during setup and green reading. Just hit the thing frees you up to hole putts. Some days they go in. Some days they dont
What exactly does putting your your hand on your leg do while setting up. I sink 12 footers all day long just stepping up and wacking it. It's those quick 2 ft. Puts that kick my ass.
@@AliTaylorGolf yeah but how do I quit doing the stupid shit. Like the little chip shot I missed the other day. 10 footer and bladed it across the green. Dumb shit. And that was after a buitiful 9 iron that the wind got ahold of and carried a bit. Should have been a birdie and ended up a five.
Interesting how long Cam looks at the hole before he pulls the trigger. He is on record as saying that he likes to bring his eyes back from the hole at the speed he feels is right to hole the putt.
Play to the conditions that are in front of you, imperfect grass, allow for that, right to left slope, allow for that, can't putt from 6-8 feet, practice practice practice.
You look like me out there, Ali. About 1 for 10 on your putts while blaming the grass and the wind. 😆 Just busting your chops ... Good advice overall. I have been experimenting with Smith's approach -- no practice putts and just trying to feel the ball into the hole. Works pretty well and takes focus off of mechanics.
He doesn't even use the line on the ball either. But for his technique to work he needs to get the green speeds visualised which means a lot of pre round practice
@@taylorjohnson9035 he marks a line on the ball but doesn't use it during play. If you look at his liv golf video he only uses the line during practice with mirror
Have you noticed that Smith sets up with his eyes very much inside the ball? This is neither good nor bad because what is important is how you see the line. Is the line you see standing over the putt, actually lined up down your chosen line. Is perception the same as reality? Now, you have missed every putt to the left. I would suggest that you may be standing too close to the ball.
I swing a practice swing to kind of tell myself I’m ready for a putt. Reading a green is my hardest problem. Also the green location can effect the speed (dry wet windy). I swing my arm as if throwing a ball to gauge how much energy it takes before on chips and putts.
You skipped a step! Cam has a trigger... very subtle and a bit unusual, but he moves the handle a bit towards his lead knee, at least that's how it appears on tv!
