The violence in KILL is designed to be max gory. Brain matter, limbs, and knives fly around the screen in nearly every shot in the second half. As the viewer, you are required to be MOVED by this intense display. The film emphasizes that Fani and his cousins ARE angry and that the emotion has manifested itself in the most destructive ways. Yeh shayad main pehle bhi point out kar chuki hoon, par ek scene mein when Fani finds the man he’s looking for, the rich bloke jisko abduct kar ke shayad bach nikle, the first words that escape his mouth are “arey merey acche din”. A promise that was made to his generation 10 years ago as he probably stepped into young adulthood. A promise that was never fulfilled, as youth like him were just expected to carry on, and wait for good times to come along. Fani himself doesn’t quite know how deep his own dissatisfaction goes. He is a regular guy with a regular job, is a cricket fan, makes Virat and Dhoni references, and liberally uses catchphrases from pop culture. Still, after one extra gruesome killing, that even his father can’t believe he was capable of doing, you realize Fani has undiscovered demons yet to be unleashed.
Similarly for Amrit, writer Nikhil Bhatt gives him a sort of sidekick, commando Viresh, played by Abhishek Chauhan. The twosome take on the goons together, both equally skilled and qualified. It’s such clever writing Fani ki tarah hi, Amrit ko bhi nahi pata akele jab padd jaayega toh kya karr jaayega, what he himself is capable of.

As she says in her review, here violence is not used to glorify the protagonist rather to highlight its futility. Its not a tool to correct what's wrong but a self destructive fire which, if left unchecked, would consume you.

@@anuragmahawar9289 So how was Animal different? In the end the "hero" loses his family, his relationship with his dad still sucks. It doesn't show that violence makes things better. Also, in Kabir Singh he realised his mistakes in the end. But when reviews are biased, none of that matters 😂

Every piece of fiction is inspired by each other. It’s not just bollywood. Even star wars is inspired by samurai movies and dune. You can’t say that it’s copied based merely on a few scenes or tropes. If that’s the case then almost all modern works of fiction have been “copied” from shakespeare.

Irrespective of genre, she possesses the quality to enjoy it and dig deep into the politics and the underlying social construct that defines the film, and what environment it results from. There’s no escaping her sharp eye and keen observations that most others are likely to miss.

i can assure you brother she would’ve hyped it more than you can imagine. look i know everyone’s entitled to their own opinion but brother she’s been doing this for a long time now and it would seem rather ignorant of you to dismiss her like that. she’s the reason i discovered some amazing south indian films. she’s attends event and watches films that are not anything less than masterpiece and indian films with not even quarter of some of the biggest pan Indian films compete and win there. so, after all these years can she not expect the indian commercial filmmaking industry to up their game?

    • @agg735

Watching good international cinema is a very good thing. And we should absolutely aspire to reach those standards. That doesn't mean we should make movies that're exactly like them, with the same sensibilities.
My comment was purely based on how very similar content across different movies have garnered wildly different opinions from her. I can't attribute that to anything else other than bias. Sigh.. that said, I get that she's entitled to her own opinions, like we all do in the comment section. If she can't handle the truth she should stop calling people names who don't agree with her opinions as well. And I don't even know why I'm wasting my time thinking or talking about her opinions that I don't agree with. Time for me to stop throwing stones in the mud.🤷‍♂
PS: Please do let me know the South Indian (or any Indian) movies that she actually recommended. Will check them out.

I agree with you😂, she would have listed all the negatives first, today I watched Kill- the attempt to show the gory was great but lost the emotional connection with the main characters, she gave excellent reviews to pathan, jawaaan but trying to point out negatives only in south(I mean mainstream hero movies), I couldn't outsee the bias- so I'll check sometimes how she reviews- earlier I used to like her alot

Love the review, Sucharita! Watched the film today and really liked it. I was thinking about the moral ambiguity and the use of violence in the film which wasn't intended to glorify the hero. However, as the hero killed the "bad guys" inventively, the people in the theatre were clapping and cheering for him and that made me uneasy. It also made me wonder about the established image of the Hindi cinema heroes, the normalised violence and how the revenge plots function in these narratives. It's good to have films that make us question it.

Now, this is called Double standards people, you hate Animal(blockbuster in the year) but you love Kill(which is going to be a disaster at BO for sure in India). No hate for "Kill", it is as good film as "Animal" was/is but without any BIG star casts & without a great story(generic bandit attack on train story). But still critics like you hated "Animal" for no reason(for an adult rated film) and now they are all gun blazingly appreciating this film just because west has appreciated it first. You even hated "RRR" which won Golden Globe & Oscar award & HCA awards with international recognition(right from EAST-Japan to WEST-USA), just because your brain is underdeveloped compared to the western critics who didn't see any bias when reviewing "RRR". Films like RRR, Animal, and off course Kill deserve applause for what they are doing but without any bias. Films are meant for ENTERTAINMENT to people and not a medium to preach or educate. And if you feel films will change society then you are being too dumb and detached from reality. Try to review films without any agenda or bias and think from the perspective of general audience (preferably Indian audience) & their context on how they relate to that story and characters. Not everybody watching films will become a Genius after watching "3 idiots" nor will become psycho killer after watching "Animal". Films have their own limits just like any other existing thing. Hope we get unbiased reviews in future with Indian lens on Indian films and not a western lens...
