Applegates ending completely flipped the coin. What Charity feels is kinda what Oscar felt originally while what Oscar felt was what Charity felt. It's a complete flip and I love it
Thank you for sharing this. It's simply fascinating how many revisions the ending of this musical has gone through. My favorite of these is definitely the Christina Applegate version. It's interesting to note that there was yet another ending from the 2005 revival when it was in out-of-town tryouts. Instead of a reprise of "I'm the Bravest Individual," Charity sings a reprise of "There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This." There's a video of the full show here on RUclips with that version of the ending. Anyway, again, thank you for sharing!
XD man there are some *feelings* about these endings. I personally like all of them. They're all valid interpretations of how Charity could react in a scenario like that.
Maybe I imagined it, but I could have sworn that when I saw it (2 days prior to opening for its initial run on Broadway), the words "And she lived hopefully after" descended from the flies and Charity jumped through the O (in hopefully) before going upstage for her final pose.
I don't like the last one. My favorite ending is the one with the girl in the red dress, because it's the one the Mexican production used, and it's sad but full of optimism and makes me cry every single time.
I'm not a fan of that last ending. I get the idea that she'll probably look for her salvation in another man, but I think the other endings all have her retaining her optimism, but also learning something. I still like the original ending best.
WOW! Amazing to see how it go from all laughs to NO laughs...I hate when 'actors" want to ACT the FUN out of everything! Donna's my fave but she always has been.
Very nice; wish there was a recording of Charlotte d'Amboise (she was a great Roxie, another great Gwen Verdon role) when she filled in out of town during Christina's healing of her broken ankle.
Where did you find the footage for the Christina Applegate Sweet Charity? Is there a link to a full show? All I can find is the pre-Broadway run on RUclips
John Dalton the fairy appears and says “it will all happen tonight” and charity being optimistic sees it as a sign of hope but the fairy turns around and it’s revealed that it was a billboard ad for “the good fairy on CBS (tonight at 7)”
I'll just add that the Royal Exchange in Manchester had the best ending I've ever seen, far superior to any of these which all feel wrong. They had the entire cast come back on, surrounding charity and relaying back to her the sign language type hand gestures which Charity had taught to Oscar in the lift scene to calm his nerves. It was powerful and emotive without pushing the point, subtle and let the audience 'get it' in their own time. Sweet and sentimental but it is really the only time I've seen the show's ending actually work dramatically. Everything here falls flat and seems to get worse each time it's rewritten.
Isn't the cigarette gag just a way to get Tamsin Outhwaite out of horrendously cocking up the last note? If only someone had been smart enough to think of a way around it for poor Christina Applegate... Ouch.
The ending with the cigarette is probably the best of all the other horrible endings. I hate this musical. I think it's got great music.. but if things don't end well (and by well I mean strong and in an understandable fashion compared to the rest of the story) I'd rather not waste my time getting involved with it. I'd rather these songs just be on their own somewhere then attached to this musical. This is the How I Met Your Mother/Dexter of musicals; one whose horrible ending wastes the rest of an exceptional work.

Christina’s version was amazing!

Love the original (I actually worked Donna’s tour), but the Applegate/O’Hare revision is brilliant. Love it.
freaking love the applegate ending
Christina Applegate was the most heartbreaking 💔 Charity I’ve seen.

That's the broadway revival of 2005 and the girl is Christina Applegate, who was nominated for a Tony for her perfomance

patimuse Same wish there were videos of the understudies and Ann Renining from 86 revival’s ending
This is the magic of theater. Every interpretation is valid, even if one does have a preference for one ( Applegate)

I do NOT understand The Good Fairy ending. What IS that?
John Dalton the fairy appears and says “it will all happen tonight” and charity being optimistic sees it as a sign of hope but the fairy turns around and it’s revealed that it was a billboard ad for “the good fairy on CBS (tonight at 7)”
@@katiescott. yeah but what does it mean, you didn’t answer his question
@@audramcdonaldapologist3676 It's just supposed to be a joke to those expecting a fairy tale ending out of musicals
are there full shows of bonnie and tamzin?
is there a full video anywhere of the bonnie langford production?
Is there a movie version of this? Some of these scenes look good but I have absolutely no idea what they’re saying
Yes, it's on DVD and Blu-ray, starring Shirley MacLaine and directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse.
aurora spiderwoman cool

It's so tacky to alter shows.
