The funniest scene for me is when all the women are eating the "men's folly" dish and they are all praising the food (specially the ummeboshi) and then the assistant character tries to join and she says "it's the emoji for me" and all of the other women quickly correct her and say "ummeboshi". After watching The Menu and Avatar 2 in a span of two weeks, I personally enjoying watching The Menu (Not having the running time of over 3 hours helps). what was there to get? he was sexually inappropriate with one of his staff members (who herself decided that everyone should die at the meal). He says sorry but he takes it to the nth degree by trying to maim the genitalia of all of the men. It just shows how he doesn't have a 'moderate' button. It's just part of his vengeful character.
This movie was sooo good! I loved it. It had so many good moments. I agree with you, one of the very few criticisms I have is I also was waiting for some of the background of the staff members and why they were literally a cult devoted til death. ATJ's character even asked Elsa the chef's assistant why she is willing to die for him before their fight, and I was wanting to know that too but they started the fight and just totally skipped that opportunity to present that. It's like, no wait, stop fighting bc I want to know too lol
Hi gents!! Thanks for your spoiler review of the Menu! I just saw it today and was so excited to compare notes w/you two!! 😉 I have to agree with you, the tone was very dark w/lots of dry humor. Overall, I found it to be quite enjoyable! The course descriptions cracked me the duck up... I was in the backrow w/my camera out trying to be inconspicuous snappin' each one for memory's sake!!! 🤣 Loved the s'mores ending... too much (in a good way)💞
I am here for "cheeky-ironic horror" if a category exists, lol..the cast line up was fantastic, in my useless opinion. Also whomever cut the trailer did a good job. Are the chef's staff, more liken to "talented food cult members" loyal to him or his following? My favorite part to see will be forcing the "foodie" to cook a dish resulting in absolute humiliation.....obnoxious "faux" foodies are a pet peeve of mine 😑. Like whyyyyyyyyy?? Foam is not food, gastric is BS...one scallop topped with some rare strip of sautéed organic leek or some truffle that grows only on the northeast side of a mountain inhabited by goats that piss on it to give a "unique" flavor is NOT A DELICIOUS MEAL so why express the orgasmic over performance at each bite? LIES!! Everything cannot be delicious or nothing is.
I just finished the movie, and agree with the review. I got more confused about the fight between the two in the chiefs room, and when she dies she says” the chief didn’t tell me about the barrel”...other then that loved the film, fun sit back and want food film. Happy New Year hope it is most excellent to you guys and the Community.🍻🧡
I read another comment that mentioned she was like the head chefs prostitute/ assistant. The connection being she said “nobody can be in there besides the head chef” and she was already inside when the other girl sneaks in. Also she had the key to the head chefs secret room which had a bed inside of it too. And she said “she wasn’t going to be replaced” during the fight. She probably knew this girl was a prostitute and that the head chef liked her, or showed some favor to her. (The head chef also tried to have sex with that other sous chef)
I say a comment saying Chef did this at the last minute to make Margo part of the staff, and maybe see if she would come back? The fight happened because the server didn't like getting replaced.
@@TrevyTrev-andTheFunkyPets If she knew she was going to die at the end, why would she care if she was replaced? I'll tell you why... because its a bad movie. 😆
Where did you get the idea that he despises his mother? I didn't get that AT ALL. He doesn't hurt her. She's a drunk and he was a neglected child but the ire was saved for his father who was violent towards her. That he was violent in front of her suggests that they are both immune to violence because of his childhood.
I loved this film. Our daughter is a server in 10 course restaurant ( waaaayyy more laid back, amazing bread served & no murdering) and loved the whole food aspect. the whole cast did awesome. Maybe Tyler should've made a cheeseburger.
I was thinking the same thing for 1250 and how it was cheap. But then I realized that they say In the movie you have to bring a plus one. So that’s 2500, which for 12 people alone for one night is 30k.
I got hung up in the cheap price, too. When he said $1250 a person, I thought it should have been $12,500 a night. I’m not rich at all. But, I have been to fancy restaurants where bills easily racked up to over $500 for 3 people, w/ drinks. I liked this movie!
I mean, they live crammed in an island, all look and act and dress the same, and obsessively work like robots. One killed himself just because the chef told him how he messed his life, not hard to see that the other staff are the same. All very cult like. Not hard to see tons of symbolisms
16:43 I thought she stabbed him in the thigh, referencing back to what chef did to his father for his abuse towards his mother, tho it happened so fast I couldn’t tell lol
the woman he was sexually inappropriate with tried to stab him in the c0ck then the staff chase all of the men to do the same to them. The thigh stab was something else - that was his childhood i think.
As for the staff, I thought they were loyal in a cultish sort of way, like they cried knowing they were going to participate in this elaborate sacrifice…nice review!
A movie I come back to from time to time. Fiennes’ committed performance really helps, and a number of the other guests are allowed to shine with amusing lines and scenes (Leiguzamo, in particular.) Hoult looks the part, but his manic acting detracts from his character. Taylor-Joy is just fine, Chau’s part felt awkward (the tortillas line was a riot, though) and there’s much I’d change as far as dialogue, actions, settings. The food titles are a nice touch (“Tyler’s Bullshit” especially) however it’s too much to swallow that *all* in the kitchen behind Slowik, and all of those guests, would submit to immolation. Many squawk about how this film hammers you with some sort-of social commentary, but I don’t see it that way. I see The Menu as a revenge film, Slowik out for revenge on a certain group of people who’d driven the love of what he did right out of him. To that end he punished the guilty with others he judged to be complicit, for pretending not to be part of “the takers” (that young lady assistant who went to Brown, not on student assistance, etc.) A flawed film, but darkly sinister and amusing to watch.
ohhhhhh - thanks for explaining the sitch with Leguizamo's assistant. (I was kinda lost on why the chef doubles down on her after she ran her credientials --> 'cuz she went to Brown with no loans. Got it!!) Also... do a reveiw for Mulholland Drive!! (I watched that movie when it came out and I think I was too young to understand... it scared the crap outa me and I remember being mad bc I was scared and also had no idea what the movie was about. 😅All these years later, come to find out it's a great movie and cult classic. I'd rewatch and then follow up with a reveiw if ya'll did one. Just a thought.) Anyway, finally subscribed after watching at least 20 of your reviews by now. You both are the best. Informative AND hilarious. Great combo.
I saw this last night. It was good and very unique to me. I would right off the staff so willing as being part of cult. I believe the few staff members tearing up before they die such as "the mess" as him fulfilling his role in life/ the chef's presentation
hearing your synopsis reinforces my meta theory about the island as the earth and her leaving early is how humans cope with the overall use of the planet. the original speech is very garden "do not eat-" and he starts them off in a place where they could literally all decide to become a commune, a literal garden of eden and two restaurants (the expansion home) with living quarters (and the staff could have a restaurant and they could have one.) but because they are all passive none of them truly escape the minor intimidation and brutality that they suffer in their lives.
When I saw this trailer, I thought, fuck, they stole my idea out of the collective conscious. My idea is about a master chef preparing a cannibal feast for an elite clientele -- which, i see, this is not. It's also supposed to be a commentary about classism, racism, sexism, ambitions, empty success, the service industry, etc. But my story takes place in Alaska, there's a serial killer who is hired to kidnap and bring a live subject, and the diners represent people in the upper echelons of power, fame, wealth, beauty, intelligence, and so on. I'm very happy this film isn't about cannibalism, even though, I have to admit the title The Menu was very clever; and I wished I had thought of it first.
I loved this movie!! I believe it’s $1,200 a plate though not $1,200 a head which is why he mentioned the couple who’s ate there 4-5 times. They’re spending $5-8k a night
Just saw this tonight and loved the concept and execution (😉) but I did think it was going to have a bit more humor because of the tone of the trailer. Was expecting more camp but still really enjoyed it especially Hong, Ana, and Nick and it definitely had some ha moments. I liked being served 🧑🍳 all the different puzzle pieces about why the guests were chosen. I like this movie the way it is but I like the idea so much that I almost wish there was another version that was just as diabolical but had less Hannibal Lector vibes and more Hans Gruber or Landa's malicious charm.
kind of wish she drove the boat right into the restaurant and saved them but that wouldnt fit the film as they subvert ur expectations, but it does follow the final girl trope. seeing her almost smile when it blows up showed me how she almost agrees with the chef.
I think the end dish was not great. Who wants barbecue meat mixed in with their marshmallow and chocolate? Also, this movie reminded me A LOT of "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" combined with "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and her Lover". Both were better. I did not like the ending it was just very lame, why did the guests not do more to leave? Exactly like in "Discreet Charm".
Nope. She survives. And the burger also wasn't made with the smoked beef from the smoke house, since smoked beef will become very very sad cremated beef if you fry it. That burger was made with fresh juicy meat.
the food is to die for. literally 😂 it was good. i think that girl is his daughter. what happened to his family in the picture on the wall in his home?
I think the reason the chef asked Margot to fetch the bucket was bc by doing that task she'd officially be on the staff side.
I thought it was to kind of test her and see if she would betray them by calling for help so he would truly know what side she was on

what was there to get? he was sexually inappropriate with one of his staff members (who herself decided that everyone should die at the meal). He says sorry but he takes it to the nth degree by trying to maim the genitalia of all of the men. It just shows how he doesn't have a 'moderate' button. It's just part of his vengeful character.
@@Frichilsasta08 good point. didn't think about that. it was a funny scene as well.
This spoiler was worth it. Still going to watch the movie, but I'm loving having your opinion in my ear.
Hi gents!! Thanks for your spoiler review of the Menu! I just saw it today and was so excited to compare notes w/you two!! 😉
I have to agree with you, the tone was very dark w/lots of dry humor. Overall, I found it to be quite enjoyable! The course descriptions cracked me the duck up... I was in the backrow w/my camera out trying to be inconspicuous snappin' each one for memory's sake!!! 🤣 Loved the s'mores ending... too much (in a good way)💞
it's makes sense ..i stopped selling plants after 10 years cause people sucked the joy out of it for me.
I've been wondering whats the whole plot and you saying "jonestown on the food network " really summed it up.
Ever since I discovered the UK show Skins on Hulu I’ll watch damn near anything with Nicholas Hoult in it lol
Haha he played such a brat in that but I agree
Me too!
I loved this film. Our daughter is a server in 10 course restaurant ( waaaayyy more laid back, amazing bread served & no murdering) and loved the whole food aspect. the whole cast did awesome. Maybe Tyler should've made a cheeseburger.
Just realized the restaurant our daughter works at has Burger Night ( the only thing served) one night of the week . Coincidence?
I was thinking the same thing for 1250 and how it was cheap. But then I realized that they say In the movie you have to bring a plus one. So that’s 2500, which for 12 people alone for one night is 30k.
They had to bring a plus one, but there were 12 guests total. So $1,250 × 12 = $15,000
59 cents for a lb of bananas 👌
Always up for a Ralph Fiennes performance
I have to watch this. 😅So many service jobs - so much rage! I can't wait.
I got hung up in the cheap price, too. When he said $1250 a person, I thought it should have been $12,500 a night. I’m not rich at all. But, I have been to fancy restaurants where bills easily racked up to over $500 for 3 people, w/ drinks. I liked this movie!
Yeah I thought it should have been $10,000
Yeah I've unfortunately paid $1000 at a restaurant before. And I'm a regular person who will ride my bike over driving due to fuel cost 😅
1,250 is a lot of money. might not be to you but it is definitely a lot.
That cheeseburger looked so freaking yummy.... like I got so hungry
It's like if David Korean had a canteen at work and he was a bit handy in the kitchen.
The final scene where the guests turn into s’mores spoiled us in the trailer 5:43
I didn't see that scene in the trailers I watched. I only saw them putting giant marshmallows on sticks in the middle of the dining room.
One of the dumbest scenes of all time.
Really happy I found your channel 😊
You had me at culinary death cult...
So the staff willingly killing themselves together with the chef at the end. Is that suppose to be some sort of symbolism on the service industry?
Great question, I want to know too haha
I mean, they live crammed in an island, all look and act and dress the same, and obsessively work like robots. One killed himself just because the chef told him how he messed his life, not hard to see that the other staff are the same. All very cult like. Not hard to see tons of symbolisms
No... it's symbolism of a bad film.
I can't fucking wait for this, I hope it's as good as it looks??! 🙌
16:43 I thought she stabbed him in the thigh, referencing back to what chef did to his father for his abuse towards his mother, tho it happened so fast I couldn’t tell lol
Me too they quickly cut to the wound and the scissors were embedded in what looked to be his thigh.
the woman he was sexually inappropriate with tried to stab him in the c0ck then the staff chase all of the men to do the same to them. The thigh stab was something else - that was his childhood i think.
I dont understand how did margot know the old man and the angel death
she knew the old man because he was one of her clients (she's a prostitute)
She was an escort and they where old costumers (at least the old man, I don’t know about the investor)
Well that was not was I thought was going to be on the menu. I figured cannibalism or something. Technically people do get cooked though.
S'mores.
Really enjoyed this film and your guys review of it!
Entertaining movie and excellent performances. I enjoyed your review.
As for the staff, I thought they were loyal in a cultish sort of way, like they cried knowing they were going to participate in this elaborate sacrifice…nice review!
There is no backstory or reason given that they would willingly commit mass suicide. The fact you have questions means the movie failed.
I finally feel vindicated for hating s’mores. Never had one in my life. The concept is nasty
tbh i enjoyed watching you two review the movie, finish each other's sentences (and emotions at times), and I really really enjoyed the movie.
I loved the film. I definitely didn’t know what was coming. I found it very unique.
A movie I come back to from time to time. Fiennes’ committed performance really helps, and a number of the other guests are allowed to shine with amusing lines and scenes (Leiguzamo, in particular.)
Hoult looks the part, but his manic acting detracts from his character.
To that end he punished the guilty with others he judged to be complicit, for pretending not to be part of “the takers” (that young lady assistant who went to Brown, not on student assistance, etc.)
A flawed film, but darkly sinister and amusing to watch.
The “togo” was the best part of the movie to me. I was like OH SHXT!
ohhhhhh - thanks for explaining the sitch with Leguizamo's assistant. (I was kinda lost on why the chef doubles down on her after she ran her credientials --> 'cuz she went to Brown with no loans. Got it!!)
Also... do a reveiw for Mulholland Drive!! Just a thought.)
Anyway, finally subscribed after watching at least 20 of your reviews by now. You both are the best. Informative AND hilarious. Great combo.
Thanks for the review gentlemen. I just saw this one and also really enjoyed it. Very funny satire
I saw this last night. It was good and very unique to me. I would right off the staff so willing as being part of cult. I believe the few staff members tearing up before they die such as "the mess" as him fulfilling his role in life/ the chef's presentation
hearing your synopsis reinforces my meta theory about the island as the earth and her leaving early is how humans cope with the overall use of the planet. the original speech is very garden "do not eat-" and he starts them off in a place where they could literally all decide to become a commune, a literal garden of eden and two restaurants (the expansion home) with living quarters (and the staff could have a restaurant and they could have one.) but because they are all passive none of them truly escape the minor intimidation and brutality that they suffer in their lives.
this is the ultimate "I can fix him" movie
I always forward to the part where y'all rate the movie to see if I have to watch it. Later on I watch the full review.
Have you guys seen "Fresh"?
Yes: ruclips.net/video/_VeXDyMkKRE/видео.html
Did you like it? I thought it was pretty good.
Great review, I loved the movie. Was never bored and it kept me guessing. But it was sillier than I thought it would be.
I loved this movie!! I believe it’s $1,200 a plate though not $1,200 a head which is why he mentioned the couple who’s ate there 4-5 times. They’re spending $5-8k a night
That makes sense.
….question: how come the guests don’t fight back???
Is it because this is a Comedy??
kind of wish she drove the boat right into the restaurant and saved them but that wouldnt fit the film as they subvert ur expectations, but it does follow the final girl trope. seeing her almost smile when it blows up showed me how she almost agrees with the chef.
Margot was poisoned with neurotoxin in the burger. Her sudden pupil dilation in the last scene is the clue to her death.
Nope. She survives.
And the burger also wasn't made with the smoked beef from the smoke house, since smoked beef will become very very sad cremated beef if you fry it. That burger was made with fresh juicy meat.
Wait was Tyler the person that was hanging when he gave her the key and told her to go get the barrel
Great review and awesome film. I laughed my butt off. Felt sad for the smores.🥴
$1250 is perfect to attract the "nouveau riche", you know, the people who make service workers a living hell. Makes perfect sense to me.
I really wanna see this! But Im watching the spoiler to know when to cover my eyes. Lol
Missed it because my Gin was delivered as it started 😭🍸
I want that life.
@@fishjellyfilmreviews You most definitely will! Slightly surprised that you don’t already.😸
I was waiting for this. Lets go!
the food is to die for. literally 😂 it was good. i think that girl is his daughter. what happened to his family in the picture on the wall in his home?
Love you review but I still didn't get it anyway but I'm Swedish and I watched the movie with English subs so I probably missed the details.
