Yes Rockler had a “Swap Meet(outdoor flea market)” in the parking lot and I could not pass up the set. I’m restoring them at work but I’m limited on machinists tools since I’m at a line station. Family events 1st(keeps wife happy), home repairs 2nd(keeps mother in law happy), work 3rd(keeps me happy to buy more tools), 4th repairing grandchildren’s cars and far down the line are my hobbies that keep me sane...I have tons of extra time since retiring from the Navy Reserves and I’m finally able to hone the skills I’ve learned in high school. Thanks for the tips on starter blades. I didn’t think of that. Thank you for this and thank you for RUclips.
Hey Mitch, I happen to have 2 full sets of 45 and 55 irons. With that said, I also have several other irons for the 45 and 55 that are mis matches. I'd be happy to send some of the odd balls off to you if you can provide with with a list of what you are missing. I also run into irons at my friends local antique shop and usually get first pick of the cool stuff that comes in. Let me know.
+John Burkitt Hi John, Thanks, that's very kind of you to offer. If you can drop me your email address to mail@womadeod.co.uk I'll let you know what I'm short of. Cheers, Mitch
Mitch Peacock - WOmadeOD .... They're tiny devils, so that would be quite a challenge. They're also interchangeable with other planes, so I'm guessing available new from somewhere.
+Mitch Peacock - WOmadeOD Try www.stjamesbaytoolco.com/stanley.html They claim, "The St. James Bay Tool Co. manufactures many hard to find parts that may be missing from your stanley tools." I see a number of parts for the #45, although the only spur-like entry is: "#444 Spur Blocks" Looks like they sell a slitting blade, so Mitch, maybe you could have saved all that time for only 8 bucks or so? I’ve been looking all night online for something like yours and just when I was going to call it quits I stumbled onto your site. Thank you so much. I have a Union No.42, and Stanley’s No’s 48, 49, 50, 78 & 194 and need cutters for all. Chrome Steel? If I use this then I don’t have to build a Forge? I’m a “BackYardJackOfAllTrades,” but don’t have the time to build everything to do some of the jobs. Thank you for this one and I’ll look at the next video and Subscribe.
Welcome! Any hardened tool steel will do, but the trick is to not generate enough heat whilst shaping, to anneal the blade. This means quick rough shaping with a coarse grinder, cooling often with water. Followed by refinement using oil/water/diamond stones. Exactly as you would change the bevel angle on a chisel. Worn down bench plane blades make great donor material. Sounds like you'll be busy with all those cutters!

I'm glad my No. 45 came with the slitting blade, but nice to see how one can be made for when I lose it...
