How to Write an Email

Learn how to write an email that is courteous, professional, and formatted correctly. This video covers each part of an email and gives examples:

Hello, probably you don't need to use the Cc in this situation for school enrollment. Cc means "carbon copy" and is used to send a copy of the email to someone. Here's an example of when Cc is used: You have a group project with four students. You email a question to one of the students (using "To")--but, you can Cc the other students so they all see the email you sent to the student.

Is it appropriate to have an exclamation point after a salutation? Also, we do not indent paragraphs in emails?

In English, an exclamation point isn't used in a salutation. On rare occasions, someone might use this punctuation in an email to a close friend or relative IF they are writing with exciting news. Even then, still, we'd typically use a comma.
No, we don't indent paragraphs in emails. Even in printed letters and assignments, usually indentions aren't used. Instead, blank lines between paragraphs are the norm. (It depends on the teacher or professor though.)

We always use a comma after the greeting in formal emails at work and university. We have never used a colon.
