[ DEMO 1 ] Touhou 17.5 Gouyoku Ibun - No Death Clear~

- After a long wait, we finally get a link to the beta. I'm by no means an expert, but I will be giving my general thoughts on this early demo~
The controls are as follow:
Z: dodge. If you don't press a direction, you will absorb all the water in the surrounding area, and if you press a button it will start a dash. You can graze with either of those, and it will last depending on how long you press the button.
X: Attack. In the ground, you have 3 moves to choose; a neutral attack, an attack downwards, and an attack upwards. If you keep pressing X sucesively, you'll get a combo (sometimes you'll have to face the other direction mid-combo in order to connect).
You absorb water while grazing/dashing; that will give you thouse weird orbs which you can use as a bomb, but be careful, since they're also your lives.
If you graze/dash while being close to a bullet, it will immediately transform all the bullets that came from the same source in water, which is of course a good thing.
Overall I think this game is pretty forgiving, even if what you see looks hard. A lot of your attacks have invulnerability, you can spam dashes in order to clean the screen, and the game combos for you. The only thing you'll have to be careful of is physical attacks, like the ones of Yuugi.

I am here to point out how gorgeous Yuugi's Outfit ( possible Redesign ) in this game is.
Its been there since 13.5 (or even earlier idk about the manga)
This outfit's first appearance was on a promotional artwork for Subterranean Animism.
It´s a bathrobe since they are at a hotspring, so it´s most likely not a redesign.
She wore it since 13.5 so i dont think its a redesign but its cool seeing her dressed up like this while fighting

I did find it kinda odd that you can't shoot your own projectiles like other touhou games.
This is my first time actually seeing the beta, and my reaction can pretty much be summed up like this:

People keep comparing this game to Luna Nights when imo it's closer to Magical Chain or Tempest of Heaven and Earth.

That's like comparing DOOM to GTA. Sure both can be FPS games but the way you go about playing them is completely different.
@PSYCHICFIRE I've never played GTA so I assumed there was a first person mode in it. I'm also talking about GTAV not the first two.
@PSYCHICFIRE No not the whole franchise is third person, from what I recall the first two games were top down and played allot more like an arcade. The rest are generally third person though.
I love Mystical Chain!! And yes the spell card and spell break parts is very much like Mystical Chain..
I love how Kogasa is stage 2 and Yuugi is stage 3, exactly the order that they appear in their respective games.

Interesting. Taking a new direction with the graze mechanic of the fighting games, and bringing back the bullet deflection with the gohei of Touhou 1 way back on PC98.
Wow, this doesn't look like an oficial Touhou game, it is so different (except for the characters and sounds)... Marisa is not even playable, but maybe it is because it is a beta version. Still surprised that it came that fast. It is a fighting game, but more similar to Cuphead than Street Fighter...
According to the wiki translation, there is a black water (actually, it is petroleum) and I feel that it is going to make question our relation with nature (like in WBaWC)...

I would prefer to think that she goes to the hot springs waters and when she is not there she is in Old Hell or in some party

I have mixed feelings on the game...
I like the platformer style, the interface of the game and artstyle...
But there's a noticeable lack of sprite counts and no anticipation and squish and squash animations (noticeable on before and after jumping animations), the character's don't feel organic aside from idle animation. And camera don't follow reimu when going above and beyond the screen.
Idk, i feel like its a farcry but I maybe just overhyped myself when I heard the game's announcement before and I just comparing it to other games now. Afterall this is the first official platformer, so lets give it a chance.

After Luna Nights this game seems outdated.
though in all honesty, there's a ton of fanmade games that makes official touhou games look outdated.
Including the very pretty Danmaku Festival that does a somewhat replay of events with absurd graphical detail.

@@gesotaiga2398 The thing is at least with the bullet hells, zun has a distinctive style (art style, the lovely backgrounds and patterns). Particularly with the earlier games and GFW. Same thing with the fighting games but this just feels like a downgrade to gensokyo night festival and luna nights. I am not just saying this for graphics either, the gameplay feels a bit stiff with the moves. It reminds me of that chain game with touhou characters. Not sure on the name though.

@@CerealKiller Look art styles are subjective and all but this game does not look better than Luna Nights. That game has BEAUTIFUL super fluent sprite animations. This one on the other hand looks and feels SUPER stiff.

Touhou 17.5 Sprite + Sonic Mania = ???
This Game Graphic looks like a Sonic Mania or Sega Saturn Game
I like the concept but not the current view of its realisation. Sprites are clumsy, spellcards are strange and music does not make me feel anything but emptyness... At the same time the artstyle is very impressive and backgrounds are really nice. I hope that girls (sprites, not arts) will be redrawn and the whole game will look more like Luna Nights. IMHO
It looks epic and fun but one thing that bugs me is the graphics/GUI. Like, there's the pixelated number percentage for water, the brushstroke-style meter for what I'm assuming is the equivalent of SWR's spirit bar, the boss's healthbar being so small and thin in comparison, etc. I know it's just the beta so hopefully those are fixed though.

That may just be a coincidence, just like with Okina's theme.
I also noticed something. Kogasa is the 2nd stage boss, and Yuugi is the 3rd stage boss, just like in their respective games if I'm not mistaken. Somehow, I think that means the 4th, 5th, and 6th bosses will apply.

FYI, according to the translation provided by the wiki (en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Touhou_Gouyoku_Ibun/Story/Reimu%27s_Scenario), the incident this time is that there is "black water" gushing out everywhere on the surface of Gensokyo. Always wanted a Mystical Chain sequel, and seeing this gameplay similar to it, is really putting my hopes up! Plus that ZUNpets at the start is very nostalgically styled..
