The Great Canadian BUTTER TART

- The Canadian Butter Tart doesn't get enough credit. To me it should be as famous as any other food Canada has to offer. Its the greatest and on par with Pastel De Nata (personally). The combination of salty and sweet, the flakey pastry, the gooey butter filling. 10/10. If you have never tried or HEARD of a Butter Tart before, do yourself a favour. Follow this recipe and give it a try! You will not be disappointed...thats a promise.

Love butter tarts they should be famous
Canadian here, these look every bit is good as all the ones I've tried! And I've tried a lot. I like mine with raisins the best. They are a mashup of a pecan pie filling and any nut or dried fruit you'd like to add to it. Definitely one for the books
I love the corniness of Canadians. I also love British Columbia and the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen on earth.. I’m gonna have to try this!
Can’t wait to make these! Your a good teacher and great personality. Pie crust is nice and thin, love that! Gooey .. I’m in heaven ❤ keep positive don’t answer smart … ones! Amazing but I love with raisins , or jam and a little cocoanut for hubby. Mmmmm
thank you Jamie I came back and did this again thank you! a special treat for my son visiting from NS!!! It is a convenient recipe that provides a lovely decadent/original dessert/treat. I wish I could give you a picture!! YOW
My eldest son (21 1/2 years old) is going to start following in your footsteps and begin his cooking journey !
Oh honey! The South is famous for our pecan tarts and pies! Come on down and visit!!!
Californian here, these look so delicious! They look a bit like mini pecan pies that they make in our southern states. I'll give these a shot for sure! Awesome vid btw👍🏽
I agree, this version of them very similarly resembles mini pecan pies. That's not always the case with them. Also, they don't necessarily need to include pecans.. In Canada its between raisins, pecans or nothing at all...
But whatever it looks like, it's delicious either way!
As a fellow Canadian, I couldn't imagine a world without butter tarts! (but with raisins!)
Three things. One upset baby. Flakey pastry dough. And a filling.
One upset baby mandatory
Never heard of these, but I have had something similar before. "Pecan tarts" in the USA are basically the same thing as the ones that had the pecans in them. Some places skimp on the pecans and only put two or three in the entire tart, so they're even closer. I may have to try these (but with lots of pecans!) to see if they're better, worse, or about the same.
Very similar to a pecan pie, but lots more butter. And all that brown sugar!! My A1C number just went off the chart! Looks sooooooo good!
My Canadian grandmother used to make these and there were delicious. She put raisins in hers I seem to remember. My sister brought the recipe to Australia and made them for Christmas one year and they were delicious. Somewhat smaller than yours though and maybe some had walnuts?? Thanks for sharing
Big debate in Canada whether to put raisins or nuts in them, or nothing. People argue for years about the merits 😜
Those butter tarts rival Don’s Bakery in Muskoka , ON! Nicely done!!!!
Ohhh I’ve heard how good that place is!
I’m definitely gonna give these a go! Damn they look delicious 😍 And the recipe seems super easy too. Thanks for the recipe 😁
oh yes! i know you'll love them!
These are a Christmas holiday necessity in my family (and, actually, just in the general region where I grew up). These are always included when people give you a tin of holiday treats (another Canadian tradition, gifting each other different treats so that by Christmas eve the treat tray is a totally random assortment of treats, only a few of which we've even made).
I found this when trying to see if anyone had made "Brown Sludge Tarts" from The Dragon Prince... and uh, yeah, these are definitely tarts full of brown sludge. They look nice though.
Lol I love how casually you just toss everything together.
Anyway, in my quest to get to the corn syrup free roots of the pecan pie I discovered the butter tart and the border (Ecclefechan) pie and those are the closest I find to a pecan pie made traditionally so I'm going with a butter pecan pie leaning on the firm side of the butter tart filling.
After I made this I realized how similar a butter tart is to pecan pie... or at least this version of the butter tart. They don't always have pecans in them and a lot of the time the filling isn't so dark. But this looks almost like mini pecan pie haha
@@antichef yeah, I think this is how pecan pie was made before the corn syrup revolution lol. The border pie is very similar too but is loaded with dried nuts and fruits.
Oh, just imagine with bourbon.
OMG!! Just found you a couple of days ago and thought, this guy sounds Canadian, how 'about' that??? Then I found this... However, I love my butter tarts you have to make them both ways!!! Maple Syrup is the best way not too sweet and yum!
Dude!!😂 you are always so funny! Even when I’m not sure you’re trying!!😂😂❤
Love learning something new! Great episode!!
You gotta try em, Karen!!
Butter tarts are great my mom made them during the holidays she was from Canada 🇨🇦
Loving your channel, would not dare to attempt most of what you do, however did make these Butter Tarts, used muscavado in the sugar which was gritty in the resulting tarts, taste was great though.
Tried again today usin castor sugar, very different taste and look, works well with the walnuts I used.
My Canadian ex-boyfriend kept talking about butter tarts and I had no idea what he meant…now I know!
NEED to try these some day 🤤
I like a few raisins in mine, adds a great flavour.
Absolutely love butter tarts. Have never seen them with pecans (pecans do not grow in Canada), they are traditionally made with raisins. Too bad they aren't sold in the US. Delish.
No thank you. I love pecan pie and tarts. Not to say, I wouldn’t try them sans raisins.
Reminds me of a Scottish recipe they have Tassie in the name but they have dried return on them. Yum
Birdy
That's some good looking tarts!
👌🏻👌🏻
I should start also making my mini pecan pies with maple syrup.
Came out perfect! 😊
Looks so good and kinda easy to make :)
I’m making these tomorrow. Maybe I’ll make them famous in NorCal. 😮
is this a simpler and probably even tastier version of the “crack pie”? the magic blend of sugar and butter and flour
A little bit! Obviously without that corn powder !
Now I know what he’s talking about in ‘Steal My Sunshine’!
ohhhh man ya forgot the Rum n Raisens....there's nothing like great Butter Tarts!!!
Huh, both sides of my family made these in the US. Mid Atlantic and southeast. We didn't call them butter tarts though, we called then maple and brown sugar tarts. We made then exactly the same way though, minus nuts.
Will try the maple syrup, my recipe called for corn syrup, trying to avoid this.
LOVE this....doing Canada proud. HOWEVER....as my dad used to say, if you're from a commonwealth country like Canada or the UK, it's PEH-CAHN. A pee-can is what you keep under the bed. 😆🤣😝
I grew up saying pee-can. I'm from southern Ontario (although we used walnuts; pecans were too expensive).
Nothing like a Butter Tart. Yuuuuumy❣️❣️❣️ Mine are the best....just saying 😊
I want to make butter tarts for (first) Thanksgiving this year. Who else to turn to for advice than a Canadian chef?
Delicious looking!
they were!
We do pecan gassiest. Looks the same but their smaller
Inside should be gooey, top should be crunchy, and bottoms flakey. 👌👌
You gotta have raisins in them 😊
No raisins!!!! And, yes, I will fight you!
I am known for my butter tarts. In fact I get work trade with them. I always use golden brown sugar less molasses and a milder taste
Plus I put cream in my batter
@@kathleenmouat8499how much cream? That’s an interesting addition. I’d like to try that, sounds yummy.
@@weloverescuedogs2820 about a fourth of a cup
Yes. KD with ketchup with a fork
My theory as to why it isn't known much outside of Canada is because it lacks a catchy name like Poutine.
Should i grease the pan?
Butter tarts are with raisins or walnuts.
5:32 they got too dark because of the maple 🍁 syrup?
Has anyone ever told you about an invention called “a pastry cutter” ?
look like the mini pecan pies they sell at Walmart I think they're just pecan pies but they look good
Traditional Butter tarts do not have maple syrup in them, thank goodness. Unless it's imitation maple flavour then it might be ok, but otherwise just vanilla.
Europeans - compared to this you know nothing of pastry ! - Go Canada! Well done my friend!
Dem fightin’ words!
Just small pecan pies? You are making this famous. I’m making these tomorrow!
You need a pastry cutter
Is it runny? My gram made them runny?
Isn't that really just a pecan pie tart? Maybe the reason they're not more famous outside of Canada is because Pecan Pies have overwhelmed them in the national narrative?
Walnuts, rather than pecans, is traditional. Straight maple, with raisins, with walnuts, or with both raisins and walnuts are all acceptable. The slightly bitter taste of walnuts balances the sugar and maple syrup. Pecans? No, no, no, according the Great Spirit. Pecans grow nowhere in Canada --- they're a southern thing. The furthest north they grow is southern Illinois. Delicious in a southern pecan pie --- but sacrilege in a butter tart.
🇨🇦🥞🥧
It's pretty famous in the southern USA. The difference is we make them full sized and put pecans on top. Yes, it's just a small pecan pie without pecans.
Let Canada have this one. We don’t ask for much! 🇨🇦
The butter tart is specifically a tart, it’s never served as pie; maple syrup and brown sugar (no corn syrup in the OG recipes) are the key components
Or yours is just a big butter tart with pecans thrown in.
Sooooo it's basically a caramel tart
no
@@GwopUpEnt yes
no
@@wmd9750 please tell me the difference
@@monzorella1 might i suggest making both and seeing the difference for yourself ?
Southern pecan pie but u can buy lil mini ones at the corner stores on the u.s. east coast that look more like what u made or probably on Amazon.
Maybe you need to leave Canada sometime and travel to other parts of the world, they make butter tarts in the USA my grandmother made them either just the butter filling or with pecans or walnuts, I also had them in France and Germany
Butter Tarts are made elsewhere, but they are of Canadian origin
Sooo, pecan pie.
Usually it’s without pecans or including raisins, so I don’t think that’s necessarily true....but maybe
Canadian here, traditionally we make them either a plain butter tart, raisin tarts, or pecan/walnut tarts(raisins are optional, too)
Butter tarts are the bomb. 🇨🇦🍁🇨🇦
Try it 🇨🇦🍁🇨🇦
