    An important midge fly pattern in Ireland early season. I recon this would kill all year on rivers and lakes anywhere. I like a red thorax on mine to give the trout a tasty treat 😋🦟

    Mr. McPhail, this isn't the first cruncher fly you have tied, and I have tied quite a few of the cruncher flies you have shown, though not as good as you tie them I assure you. My question is, what exactly is a cruncher style fly? What technique is best to fish them, rivers or lakes? This one you're tying looks like it would do very well for rivers. Here in the USA, we don't hear much about cruncher style flies, so I thought I'd ask you about them. Thank you and keep up with your wonderful videos. I have learned very much from them.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  3 года назад

      Hi Terryll Monroe,
      There'a many flies that are named like this one in the competition anglers world that fish the lochs and lakes here in the UK and Ireland..This style of fly has been around for many years and it's basically a nymph pattern with a slightly longer hackle and can represent a few species of fly especially midge..These flies also work just as well on the rivers and this one would certainly fish well..I'm glad you enjoyed the videos..
      All the very best Davie

      Hi Andy,
      The best CDC I've bought came from Premier Angling in Ireland Pat Nolan and he even sells wonderful capes as well...I have attached a link to his Facebook page as this is how I contacted him but just incase you don't have a Facebook page here is his email address for you to get in touch....patpremierangling@yahoo.ie..facebook.com/Premier-Angling-773437462775670

    Are crunchers basically chironomid emergers? Is that the purpose of the "cheeks" on them? Great pattern, years ago when I first learned to tie flies i used your videos to learn from and remember tying a variant of this style fly. Thanks again Davie, keep em coming!

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  3 года назад

      Hi Sir Megallot,
      Yes they are and especially this pattern which is really a midge pupa with a hackle, the cruncher style is very popular with many Stillwater/loch anglers because of this..I'm glad you liked the fly..
