How to tie the Black Cruncher (variation)

  • This although basically a Cruncher I have had in my box for a long time. It works particularly well towards the back end of July and has had its best days at Bewl Water. Not sure why this fly works so well it may well be the profile and the subdued colours. I would not be without these in my Loch Style boxes.
    At the time of publishing I am on the second week of lockdown and fear that by the time we get back to fishing from boats it may well be the end of July!

    An alternate for the buzzer wrap is white uv floss or a few strands of crystal flash twisted before you add a drop of resin to the floss with a needle of fine brush then blast it with uv light before adding the hackle.

    Excellent ty Lindsey ,The Brenig bars of silver will certainly like that as they are currently going mad for small black hoppers and subsurface black small flies.Regarding the whip finish tool you may find it easier to hook the thread into the small hook of the arm before the shoulder as the thread is more secure then ,just the way I do it and I am nearly up to the speed that Davie Mcphail whips finishes

    Hi Lindsay, with her ladyships conditions this is week three for us!! I think it could well be the end of July before we get into boats and then there will be long delays due to demand from stir crazy anglers!! Im quite lucky as we have a local fishery where I am a member so hopefully once the lockdown is relaxex I will get fishing … and try out the dozens of patterns I am tying to avoid boredom!! Stay healthy … Jim

    Fantastic looking fly, and it's surely going to find a way into my fly box. As for the whip finisher, don't hold it so close to the hook, back off just a tad allowing a bit more thread out to give you more room to use it , and it'll make it easier to unhook the tool from the thread.

    • @lindsayiflyfish
      @lindsayiflyfish  4 года назад

    Another great pattern to try thank you. Congratulations on mastering the whip finish tool. Do you feel now it has its place or just pointless? It think helps me shape the head on small flies when you need to prevent thread build up but lots of times I still need to use the fingers.

    • @lindsayiflyfish
      @lindsayiflyfish  4 года назад +1

      I think I need to become much more proficient at using it before making a judgment. If I was not doing videos I doubt very much I would have bothered. It does not seem to have impacted my tying in any great way. Still, I want to encourage others into taking part and having a go the least I can do is learn the tools of the trade.

    Could you send me a link please.

      Hi Chris, I like the Nano silks for tying in Deer Hair. There are lots of different ones but my favourites are the ones from Fish On and the Veevus GSP The white in 50D you can colour it with marker pens if you need a different colour.
