I've always said that All Shook Down has some of the best guitar fills. Of course it's pretty much a Replacements album in name only but Westerberg was on top of his singer songwriter game here. Always wished there was a longer take of Torture out there somewhere.
I’ve never listened to Glen Campbell, but this is beautiful. Reminds me of Johnny Cash’s “Hurt.” Not in sound or style, but in poignancy. Two aging stars reflecting on their lives with some sense of sadness, but also peace with it all.
Sometimes it amazes me how people come together and make art like this. It is such a rare thing if you think about it. Out of the billions and billions of people that have existed, only a few thousand are truly great, if that. I always think about the songs I never heard and will never hear throughout the thousands of years man has made music that was truly beautiful. Anyway, love this band. I am so happy to have lived and experienced so much great music throughout my life.
Another underrated, misunderstood & misguided. Sometimes art stays hidden until age & opportunity to speak for yourself, for fear of losing the verified success you already are enjoying takes away your own Hit Making Music, The revelation of music not even born in the minds of the leaders, much less written even in your sleep, trying to make itself known. success has ridden beside you on the bus or whatever the transportation is. love you, you are being given I am sure of, by GOD, for the best Guardian Grandaddy ever, to protect a precious Soul. Grandpa & I have so much love for you, that NEVER, will end. I accidentally deleted the first one sent, & they are all great UNENDING PURE LOVE
One of many classic songs by the Replacements - my other favorites are Androgynous, They're Blind, Kiss me on the Bus, I DON'T Know, Achin to be, I'll be you, Unsatisfied, Left of the dial, Bastards of young, sixteen blue, Anywhere's better than here, Darlin One, The Ledge, Alex chilton, Swingin Party, Waitress in the sky, Can't hardly wait & Seen your video

Stop at a light that shine bright blue And where you've been is still in view You stop at nothing at your first chance Now it's nothing like when it began When it began When it began When it began Long ago, or yesterday The queen sits quietly, the jester plays She plays off with their heads and on with my pants Oh and it was something, when it began Oh when it began When it began When it began Oh and nothing Yeah that's something I understand I dance, try to make you laugh I play the fool a king at your command Oh yeah I never had to bow to you when we began Now I can play you a tune At your command Ooo and if you say nothing Then that's something I'll understand When it began When we began When it began When it began
The album cover and the video feels very foreboding or depressing. I think it's the right word. It's like Paul is going one way and the rest of the band is going the other.
Probably because Paul and company used to on-purpose play crappy at live shows when labels were there to listen....but yes, I spent many a day listening to this album
Pretty cool that a band that gave an F-all to videos for their entire career should, here at the very end, come up with a hands-down perfect MTV video, just an absolute classic. And then they were no more--
This carries The Replacements name but is really nothing more than the beginning of the Paul Westerberg solo effort. I like the album, but I think it's a notch or two down from Don't Tell a Soul and several notches down from Tim, Let it Be, Hootenany, Pleased to Meet Me, etc.
Underrated album ("One Wink at a Time" and "Sadly Beautiful" rank up there with the band's best) from a gang that refused to stop shooting themselves in the foot. While Westerburg is the celebrated songwriter, Tommy Stinson had a far more satisfying solo career. Listen to his "One Man Mutiny," it's outstanding.
"That's the way you do it... Play the guitar on the MTV!" Paul Westerberg pretty much invented the alt.Rock genre when he moved the Replacements away from their early 80s punk rock sound. By the early 90s, when this was produced, I believe a big part of Westerberg wished he had just stayed a janitor
This should have been the video for Left of the Dial instead of thumbing their noses at MTV. Well I get it but really I wanted to see my fav band having more success .. That's something you can understand? Seems like a gazoo should be playing. This is an pretty good song but the best are NOBODY, ALL SHOOK DOWN, AND SADLY BEAUTIFUL.
My music tastes have changed a LOT since then.. xD My favorites are Billie Joe Armstrong, Kurt Cobain, Andy Biersack, Vic Fuentes, Paul Westerberg, Ronnie Radke, and Danny Worsnop :) yeah, I listen to a lot of metalcore and punk sooo...
Chris didn't like being in a rock band anymore than Charlie Watts. He moved on to his real passion, oil painting. Just the way Charlie plays jazz as his real passion.
is this video a Replacement for acid? okay I hear the boooos I'm sorry. I'm not a comedian forgive me but I dig the Replacements! yes I hear the hoorays in my mind but I guess I'm lame after all.... Cheers...... Booooos????
I love Steve Foley in this band. Josh is a pounder and where is the carl perkins like picking now? This was my favorite lineup after hearing all those ugly things Mars had to say about his "mates".
Curious. What did Mars say about his former band? Westerberg treated him like shit- at least in the final years. So he quit. He has his art. And he didn't want any part in the "reunion" tour for a reason. I can't blame him.
Played this today to see a smiling Slim. Rest easy, Slim.
This is one of the best albums of the 90s'. This band is without question the most underrated, underappreciated bands of all time.
Not a huge fan of this album but I agree they’re great.
Need to put Marshall Crenshaw on the list of underrated bands
My favorite American band.
I've always said that All Shook Down has some of the best guitar fills. Of course it's pretty much a Replacements album in name only but Westerberg was on top of his singer songwriter game here. Always wished there was a longer take of Torture out there somewhere.
1990 to be exact and I was 21 it brings back tearful nostalgia of a simple time ..
RIP My uncle Steve Foley, drummer Jesus. You're sister misses you
Very sad. RIP Steve Foley.
I'm sorry for your loss. If the company he kept is anything to go on he must have been a pretty cool guy.
Steve was a kind and decent soul. Miss running into him rollerblading around the city lakes in mpls mn. Sorry for your loss.
He was fantastic. I saw him play on the last Replacements tour & his playing on Bash & Pop is timeless.
Your uncle was very gifted. ☮️
Never missed he's legend
Paul Westerberg is my favourite singer/songwriter/guitarist of all times!
My favorite singer and songwriter but maybe not guitarist .. a stretch ha.
Such a wistful ending song to a much storied career. The blissful nostalgic hangover to a long night of debauchery. Long live the Mats!
U nailed it
Well said, my god. 💯 %

UNENDING PURE LOVE
Art is a rare and beautiful thing, even the clumsy, botched attempts at it. When we make something beautiful, that's when we are most like God.
I own this vinyl and I actually like this album. I know a lot of people didn't but it's good.
agree..I think people don't like it because it's more of a Paul solo album...
Rest In Peace Bob Stinson, you can feel his absence in this video!
These last two 'Mats albums are pure gold.
Think about it...they absolutely started alt-country.1989?
C'mon who else popularized that sound.....
REM in early 80s
@@KM-zw9qb Don't Go Back to Rockville! Also, Uncle Tupelo would like a word.
uncle tupelo and r.e.m. as the comments here mention
They had nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing to do with starting Alt-Country. You need to listen to more music, Herr General.
Big Star if we’re being honest
This is my 25th favorite song
Ahhh yes. Great times seeing them live in Jersey and New York. Time fly's but memories stay sweet.
Who's here in 2025.Love this band and these words got me through some shit back in the day...RIP SLIM
ive never heard this band till today and i think its my favoriteee!
Wow …. Listen to more. I was 18 when I first heard them and I became a huge fan.
These special effects are magnificent!
One of my favorite albums...even though it was really a Westerberg solo album...or almost. If that's what it is, so be it.
greatest underground band
beautiful!
one of my favorite albums of all time!!
I miss this band =(
this is one of many classic songs by the Replacements - my other favorites are Androgynous, They're Blind, Kiss me on the Bus, I DON'T Know, Achin to be, I'll be you, Unsatisfied, Left of the dial, Bastards of young, sixteen blue, Anywhere's better than here , The Ledge, Alex chilton, Swingin Party, Waitress in the sky, Can't hardly wait and Seen your video
All are great songs, indeed.
U forgot favorite thing
rebjiii: I hate music, but I love The Mats!
Shruggz Da Str8-Faced Clown Faviorte thing!
You forgot Answering Machine, Favorite Thing, Careless, Go, Gimme Noise, Within Your Reach, Hold My Life and Little Mascara.
Listened to the Mats since the eighties, but first time seeing this!!
I was out at Pleased To Meet Me but when I seen this videooooooo, if you please, I was like no, this is really when it ended.
Pleased to Meet Me is a killer album though. Complain about the production if you like but you can't deny the songwriting!
I can, and do. BUT, I hate everything@@rdrrr
AWESOME SONG! AWESOME BAND!, surprised not many ppl listen to them
What the??? Totally forgot about this music video. Love.
MASTERPIECE !
So reflective and beautiful :)
if your favorite band makes a video like this, I'm sorry but they're about to split up.
Bob was still alive to see this. I like this song. Bob was still alive and he might have seen this.
Those 19 people that don't like this video what the heck man?
Mats, SOUL asylum, husker du, urban gorillas, flaming O 'S, the suburbs. Great live music scene in the twin cities of mpls/st Paul mn. During the 80"s
"...and if you say 'nothing,' then that's something I'll understand."
Steve Foley RIP
Great album as well!
AMEN TO THAT!
Great drummer..great band......long live the mats!
Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no
Speed Of Light
La verdad está bonita la rola leí la letra en español y me gusto
I can agree with that
Stop at a light that shine bright blue
And where you've been is still in view
You stop at nothing at your first chance
Now it's nothing like when it began
When it began
When it began
When it began
Long ago, or yesterday

I dance, try to make you laugh
I play the fool a king at your command
Oh yeah
I never had to bow to you when we began
Now I can play you a tune
At your command
Ooo and if you say nothing
Then that's something I'll understand
When it began
When we began
When it began
When it began
Love it when Paul flips off the camera at 00:52 haha
The album cover and the video feels very foreboding or depressing. I think it's the right word. It's like Paul is going one way and the rest of the band is going the other.
This has always been one of my favorite bands. I always thought Pleased to Meet Me was a masterpiece and the their other albums were a close 2nd.
atomicinjun pleased to meet me was awesome! Underrated band
I'll always have a soft spot for the twin/tone years, but Pleased is gold
yes their best album and best produced - Pleased to Meet Me
Would've said Let It Be a year ago, but since Ed Stasium's remix of Tim dropped it's taken first place for me
RIP Slim Dunlap. 🙁
Let it Be
Thank you xD
Probably because Paul and company used to on-purpose play crappy at live shows when labels were there to listen....but yes, I spent many a day listening to this album
It's a Hootenanny!
@MrBuc128 hell yeah
Can't believe I never saw this before today. Terrible video. Great song.
I definitely prefer their earlier material,
nice fx
didn't they start plying in prince's club in minneapolis!!?? good band
1990!
john sizer great year, great band, great times. Wish I could go back for a week, or longer
Pretty cool that a band that gave an F-all to videos for their entire career should, here at the very end, come up with a hands-down perfect MTV video, just an absolute classic. And then they were no more--

@MrBuc128 this anb the ramones too
Ok
It's not 1984, it's a 1982 model. 😉
But I would also put Jeff Tweedy and Bruce Springsteen on that favorite singer/songwriter/guitarist list
This video has given me nightmares since it was first released.
It is kinda creepy, right?
What it's like to be young and on the street
Underrated album ("One Wink at a Time" and "Sadly Beautiful" rank up there with the band's best) from a gang that refused to stop shooting themselves in the foot. While Westerburg is the celebrated songwriter, Tommy Stinson had a far more satisfying solo career. Listen to his "One Man Mutiny," it's outstanding.
Sorry, but Stinson isn't half the songwriter "Westerburg" is.
@@shinybeast8946Tommy's stuff can't hang with Chris' or Slim's either. Tommy's killer on bass, but not an especially talented songwriter.
is this clay-mation???
@atomicinjun You must have not heard Let It Be or Tim, then. Pleased to Meet Me is great, but it doesn't touch those two.
"That's the way you do it... Play the guitar on the MTV!"
Paul Westerberg pretty much invented the alt.Rock genre when he moved the Replacements away from their early 80s punk rock sound.
By the early 90s, when this was produced, I believe a big part of Westerberg wished he had just stayed a janitor
I don't get the dire straits reference
@frodo2734 Or he had Twins tickets for that day.
Two more years and they would have turned into the Gin Blossoms
Hey, the Gin Blossoms are gold!
Poor Bob Stinson.
I live in Minneapolis and there are at least 10,000 Bob Stinsons here on any given day
what year did this song come out?
Is the claymation city supposed to be Minneapolis in the late Seventies-early Eighties?
KRhetor nyc
Drat. I lived in the TC and was hoping I'd be able to spot First Avenue somewhere.
KRhetor Well, they are showing Star Wars.
This should have been the video for Left of the Dial instead of thumbing their noses at MTV. Well I get it but really I wanted to see my fav band having more success .. What happened to Chris Mars on drums? Guy in this video is a good musician though !!!

I love the Replacements! Check out my cover of “I’m in Trouble”
*****
I thought these guys were against making videos.

"He has his art".
Let's not forget about his damn good 4 solo albums where he pretty much did all by himself. Mars FTW!
Westerberg treated everybody like shit and he probably carries a ton of guilt around with him about it now
Kurt Moss RIP my uncle Steve
Love them but they should have stopped after Pleased to meet me...
Minneapolis hero... for me it's them, not Prince...
Great Band, Ok Song, Average Album
who, asked
why is michael buble on my mats?
Paul has always hated music videos.
Andy Yarnell phony rock n’ roll
How did they go from punk to creative indy rock to cheesy VH1 level soft rock?
Misterioso nothing like when it began
They were musicians that were growing and evolving in the way they played and expressed. It’s clearly still them in their ragged charm.
billie joe armstrong, then paul westerberg, then kurt cobain
that one tall guy has really bad posture
I never knew pure shit existed before. Now I know it does.
I don’t like this song much at all
why not paul cmon
I do. 😊
I couldn't agree more about the 'Mats being great, but this video sucks.
That doesn't look like Chris Mars (drummer) in the video. Unless he'd really changed his appearance.
Chris quitted after the Merry go round video
Who IS the drummer in the video? HEY catching these guys for the 2015 tour! New dates
Barry Johnson I think thats Steve Foley and congrats man
we love you
