thank you so much for uploading these old tony awards ceremonies. please upload 1997 and 1998, and the missing ones 1986 to 1982. thank you so much. wonderful job on behalf of all musicals lovers
Rent is a feel-nearly everything musical with a rare combination of emotionally energetic music, genuine verbal humor, social resonance and passionate romance!
Kenneth Desmond Mosley Well it might be a little dated in backdrop and plot. But the messages and diversity of the characters is just a thing of beauty.
Are you still with us here on RUclips? It's been 3 years since you posted that, what shows have you seen and did they provide you with the pleasure and grace that you were hoping for? I hope so, and hope that all those covid era shutdowns didn't make you give up your goal!
Just hearing James Earl Jones say "A Delicate Balance" reminds me of Mufasa's speech to Simba in The Lion King about the delicate balance that is the Circle of Life.
Lloyd Webber: "The good news: This year, there are some nominations [for Best Musical] to read out!" For those who don't know, that's a reference to the fact that, the previous year, there were only two Best Musical nominees, SUNSET BOULEVARD (the winner) and SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE.
Carly Simon actually wrote and performed the opening number, "The Show Must Go On" for the 1992 film, "This Is My Life", which was the first film directed by Nora Ephron with Julie Kavner. I think it worked well for the opening number here.
tommytimp I have seen almost every musical on Broadway for 40+ years. I saw an early preview of Rent on Broadway and left at intermission. It was garbage.
George Chlada The Tony’s are usually held on a Sunday night when Broadway is “dark”. If a show is open at all on a Sunday, it’ll be performed as a matinee.
Patrica Neal survived a stoke and then Roald Dahl browbeating her during recovery with mean taunts and jeers, it’s a miracle she ever recovered enough to return to acting, so she should be forgiven adding a syllable to Audra’s name.
The Best diversity of awards I believe was 1996. Several things that I noted during this broadcast was that husbands weren’t kissing husbands wives weren’t kissing wives and a lot of that that we see these days was not there. If you got about two hours watch it it’s very entertaining and it’s great to see some of these stars directors producers 26 years ago. It was also cool to hear the name Nederlander several times. Haven’t worked for Nederlander in San Diego or I should say West Coast has been was the joy of my life.
tonight's theme: Phantom's night off (and Tony Winners appreciation night) I feel like they missed an opportunity to have the Phantom be the announcer for this show 0:42 ooooooooooo I wonder what he did to piss off the Phantom, but I guess he did such a good job last year that the theatre wing was like "Screw it let's have him host by himself this year) oooo Bernadette and Liza does an opener sigh we don't deserve either of them, or most of the broadway legends that have graced the Tony Awards stage, there's just too many RIPS here (most recently Chita Rivera and James Earl Jones) What the hell did LaToya do I guess Susan was up for another Emmy that year, ironically she would do broadway a few years from now wait did all the other revivals close before the ceremony? it would have been nice to see the others do a full performance that was a clear mislabeling (or the quality kind of stinks) it shouldn't say 1980 ah a post Sesame Street Savion Glover (yeah oddly enough to remember the around the corner era) I wonder if Forrest Gump will ever get a musical, oh wait dumb question the author of the book didn't even like the movie he'd never sign off on a musical This tells me that 3rd Rock was a midseason replacement imagine if the Bidet made it into the animated film or the live action remake Take a good look people of 1996, you're going to hear alot more of most of the cast of Rent especially Daphne Ruben Vega and Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs oh is that how SJP met Matthew Broderick? man god knows what else Jonathon Larson could have made had he lived....maybe he could have composed music for Disney wait that was Che Guevara in Evita? well I googled he was in Argentina to finish some studies so him being there around the time she died checks out Don't worry Idina your career is just starting you'll get yours of course George C Scott didn't show up and Mary Poppins loses to Mother Gothel eh dropping the booklit could have happened to anyone
Another pathetic season for musicals. Rent, possibly the worst piece of shite ever to disgrace a Broadway stage, is only matched by bring on da crap, as pure trash.

Hi Miss Pooch Smooch, Thank You for the 1996 Tony's awards a big hug, may there be more coming cheers steve
1000 thank yous for ALL of your posts!
Thank you so much for putting all the Tonys up! This is awesome!!
Rent is a feel-nearly everything musical with a rare combination of emotionally energetic music, genuine verbal humor, social resonance and passionate romance!
It is? I thought it was a glib, over-arch, unrealistic popfest with little humor or emotion at all!
Manuel Orozco it’s artless craftless crap.
Tom Shea Just my opinion
Kenneth Desmond Mosley Well it might be a little dated in backdrop and plot. But the messages and diversity of the characters is just a thing of beauty.
@@manuelorozco7760 Not that diverse, the two leads are both white hetero males.
The Tony Awards makes one want to be an actor and go see a play. Starting in 2020 I will support my local theater.
Magniificent, Richard, good luck with that.

another great show,thank's again.
thank many lot for these. all these
I am another person who really appreciates your TONYS posts. Living in New Zealand, we don't get these any more. Thank you
Lane was so cute there. Wish I could have met him at that time.

this makes me so sad . most of the people in the opening are no longer alive :(
Carly Simon actually wrote and performed the opening number, "The Show Must Go On" for the 1992 film, "This Is My Life", which was the first film directed by Nora Ephron with Julie Kavner. I think it worked well for the opening number here.
It fitted perfectly.
I was only 6 when this show was on, still a great show!
Carrie Beagle I was 3
You can hear Carol Burnett's (who was a nominee for Best Actress that year )laugh during Nathan's comments [ 51:17 ].
Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!! :) What a gem :)
There is seriously no one in this world like Nathan 😂
Bring in the noise bring in the funk- was never heard from again.
RENT deserved the Tonys that year!!!
Yicch.
tommytimp I have seen almost every musical on Broadway for 40+ years. I saw an early preview of Rent on Broadway and left at intermission. It was garbage.
I didn't see any of the nominees for Best Musical but Rent sure lives up to why it's won it's four Tonys.
@@pudgeuncle wow....
@@pudgeuncle There’s your problem
You never even tried to understand anything about it and missed out
WHAT DID NATHAN LANE DO TO ANGER THE PHANTOM
Lalotte red The world may never know
"Of course, if President Clinton has his way, Art will not be allowed to marry Buck." I LOVE NATHAN LANE SO MUCH OMG.
the shock on donna murphy’s face is so pure. i love her so much
How did they have the tony awards in theatres with shows currently in them?
The musical numbers were prerecorded
George Chlada The Tony’s are usually held on a Sunday night when Broadway is “dark”. If a show is open at all on a Sunday, it’ll be performed as a matinee.
Why can't they say Audra McDonald? Who's Audrey?
+Lizbeth Pinti At least it wasn't as bad as John Travolta calling Idina Menzel "Adele Dazeem."
One thing I just noticed speaking of Idina, Bea Arthur got the pronunciation of her last name wrong.
Patrica Neal survived a stoke and then Roald Dahl browbeating her during recovery with mean taunts and jeers, it’s a miracle she ever recovered enough to return to acting, so she should be forgiven adding a syllable to Audra’s name.
Ahhh 1996, the year I fell head over heels in love with Nathan Lane.
Here after reading about this in Viola's book! ❤ 22:22
34:15 Tony Award for Best Choreography!!
Carly Simon's "The Show Must Go On" is the opening number! It's from the movie This Is My Life! (: (: (:
Why didn't they have a montage of previous Best Actress in a Musical winners? And did Harry Belafonte mispronounce Savion's name?
Do you have '97?
Despite being younger and having hair, Lou Diamond Phillips is channeling Yul Brynner.

imagine if the Bidet made it into the animated film or the live action remake
Take a good look people of 1996, you're going to hear alot more of most of the cast of Rent especially Daphne Ruben Vega and Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs
oh is that how SJP met Matthew Broderick?

"Swingin' on a Death Foretold" is such an out-of-character joke for a top-level awards show. But hilarious if you get it.
Wait, what's the joke? I laughed but I feel I missed something.
@@brxzbze 1. he combined the two shows.
2. The idea that "Chronicle of a Death Foretold" is something to set to swingin' music.
That simple.
@@tomshea8382 Ok, so I didn't miss anything. great
1994 please
The announcer totally got it wrong, Andrew Lloyd Webber didn't win Best Score for Phantom, it went to Stephen Sondheim for Into the Woods!
Yeah
Jeffrey Kare The announcer didn’t say he won the Tony for it, he simply called it a “Tony Award winning musical” authored by Sir Andrew.
@@seamus1956 And he did win for it, but as a producer, not for score.
That intro! Hahah!
I know whyJames Keach fell for Jane Seymour it was her lovely accent. What a handsome couple they made.
