I was initially taken aback when I heard this version and thought the same thing like a lot of people on here: Why so slow & so sad sounding? There's no energy, its lifeless, etc...Not the case at all! She didn't really have much of a say over her label and producers at the time, so they made her play this "pop star" role which mostly worked but was never her authentic self to begin with. Also, if you just look up the lyrics to the song you'll realize that it is a very sad song. The musical arrangement & her vocal tone sounds very bombastic, bright and optimistic in the original record, but it doesn't actually match the sad tone of the lyrics of longing and missing someone...this version does! I saw this again with the new perspective and it made complete sense, it just has to grow on you!
