The Hue motion sensor looks a lot sleeker with its seamless front edges, and smaller despite having the extra (temp.) sensor. The IP rating and thread are Eve positives but if you’ve ever tried to set up PIR motion sensor pairs manually you’ll know how much better the Hue Labs configuration works. Apple really needs a bunch of customisable automations for setups like motion sensor pairs, triples in hallways. Shortcuts aren’t user friendly even for basic automations.
As always, TBL, a fantastic review and video. Thanks! The timing of this could not be better as I have been think that I need more motion sensors. Consider me a geek (that's not a stretch), but I literally smile every time one of my motion-based automations begins when I enter a new room. This is the way SmartHomes were always supposed to run and they really do now. I've truly enjoyed the simplicity and reliability of the Aqara motion sensors, but I am a huge Eve fan. Better still, I love the built-in light sensor. I've often wished that time-based automations in HK would allow a sunrise/sunset for one time and then a fixed time for the second time (or vice versa). However, all of these needs go away with light sensors! Thanks again for the fantastic review and guidance on condition-based automations. I've got a few that rock but have several more places where I can use them to better effect (the bathroom example you gave it my top priority).
Having these battery powered sensors open up lots of possibilities but the best speed comes from hardwired traditional motion sensors. Few models from TP link, leviton etc can be used as triggers and eliminate the speed issue altogether.
As I am now eagerly awaiting the arrival of 5 of these sensors (3 of them are scheduled to arrive on Friday), I’ve noticed a clear benefit of the Aqara motion sensors over most others, including the new Eve motion sensor: the ball & socket pivot on the mount. I prefer to have the motion sensor up a bit higher and then angled downward. I’m sure there are some good after market mounts, but I love the Aqara mount for this purpose.
I have mine set up to detect motion in my garage and triggers the overhead lights when someone walks in or the garage door is opened. It's response time is great.
12:27 my problem with the Hue motion sensor, despite being a heavy Hue light investor myself, is that there is no way that I can find to change the motion timeout from 15 seconds, which is very annoying when trying to use the 'when no motion is detected' automation, whereas with Eve I think you have control from anywhere from 5 seconds to multiple hours. Also, while they may have included a temperature sensor, I find it to be very inaccurate compared to my Eve Room sensors and smart thermostat, so I don't use it in automations anymore.
Soo if u have a few minutes can we trouble you for a video about Christmas light setup with HomeKit. Products automations and details, kinda like you always do 😁 Thank you and thanks for the content.
I just wished they would have gone with a metal side surround like a lot of their other products. But, I will be getting a few for outside (front door, garage door, deck) to help turn on lights at night or when it is dark.
Having issues with 2 of my 3 bundled Eve Motion Sensors. Batteries keep saying low and no matter how many times I change them , rest the motion sensor or delete them from the Eve app, they still say low battery. Contacted Eve and awaiting support. Worried.
Neither seems that fast compared to some Zigbee PIR. Hue for one. It has lightning-fast lighting activation with only a 10 second cool down time. Still Eve is a nice motivation sensor regardless. I'm very tempted to pick up one. Thanks for the great review!
I agree that this is awesome because it does not require a hub. However, since I already have an Aqara hub, I prefer them because they’re also super reliable and fast, but smaller and cheaper. So, my advice would be go with Eve if you don’t already have ann Aqara hub, but go with Aqara if you have one.
Hi Gregg, The biggest issue for me, would be the light sensor. The fact that Aqara‘s light sensor isn’t exposed to HomeKit is frustrating in my opinion.
I was happy to see Eve made this motion sensor much smaller than the previous Eve Motion, but yes, it’s still larger than Aqara. Currently Aqara does not expose the light sensor to HoneKit though which I don’t like.
Another great video thanks Brad. can you adjust the motion sensitivity? I live in a villa which is close to a shared driveway so I would need to be able to isolate the distance if possible? My intention is to use it to switch on the porch light. Thanks again, great stuff!
I have an Apple TV 4K and I’m wanting to pickup a door sensor but trying to decide whether to get a Eve or Aqara. Which seems to be the fastest Eve using Thread or Aqara using Zigbee? Since my Apple TV 4K is in my basement and the door sensor would be on the main floor patio door… is Thread still going to work?
I ordered one from Apple, (Amazon was "out of stock".) I have other thread devices in my Homekit and was looking for a THREAD device to turn on my bathroom lights when someone enters at night. Only issue I can see is the shortest response time setting is 2 seconds, still a tad slow IMO. (but faster than other non-THREAD brands), Also, I will never buy ANY Hubs again period. They're usually a patch used by manufacturers to cover non Homekit coverage. Also the battery may become and issue since they do not even estimate what the battery life will be, however my Thread EVE door sensor is still fine after almost a year of use (it uses a "specialty" battery), so I bought a few on Amazon for back-ups. We'll see how long takes to get out of Apple's warehouse.
I think you’ll be quite pleased with it. The Apple store shows 4 to 5 weeks for shipping for me, but maybe you’ll get lucky and receive it sooner. I would say I replace the batteries in my Eve Door and Window sensor approximately every 12 months or so…
Hi Good morning Brad, please how can I set the shortcut you mentioned to not trigger the motion sensor when the light is used on a different brightness say the motion sensor light in the hallway is 20% and I was doing something and have it for 40% but it will jump back to 20% whenever it’s triggered… so how can I set the shortcut to stop it from happening. Thanks
I think you should do a walk through with the dummy switches! That would be super useful! I felt it was a little too glossed over here gather the importance of how amazing this could be
Hard to say. I’ll definitely be interested to test what we get from Aqara. currently their motion sensors don’t expose their light sensor to HomeKit. That would probably be the biggest issue for me. But, perhaps that changes with their thread sensor.
Great video! I'm looking forward to see how this motion detector does in temperatures below 0F. Does it damage the unit? Or does it just become unreliable? I've also hesitated in getting other eve products that work outside due to this concern. Thanks!
Can the motion sensor trigger a security camera to start recording? I can't find an answer to this question. I don't want to rely on the motion sensor in the camera, I'd prefer to trigger the camera with external sensors.
Great video Brad. Is this good for outside? I only want to be alerted of people who may be triggering motion not my tree limbs blowing in the wind. Thanks
I like the idea of this, but I still rely on Alexa and Smartthings for some more advanced automations, which is why I have been using Hue still. But I may have to jump ship fully and go to this, because Hue has been unreliable for me and although Aqara is cheaper, it isn't thread yet.
I bought one after this video for my bathroom and I am trying to figure out how to have them turn off the lights after 15 mins of no motion detected and can’t seem to figure out how I can get it to turn off after 15 mins of first motion but that doesn’t work for what I want. Does anyone have a solution
any idea why no notifications are shown when a motion is detected by the Eve motion sensor- I have to open Eve app to see the motion history, etc. I did set up automation to trigger some lights on/off when a motion is detected and these do get triggered but there is no notification of motion itself as I plan to place it outside in my patio. I checked/confirmed in the home app - the notifications are enabled for this sensor. Any suggestions ?
Does the sensor work offline or does it have to be connected to some cloud based service? I’d like to use it to control a Meross Ledstrip Pro, mounted under a handrail, to illuminate a stairwell.
@@TheBradLloyd Thanks. This would be for indoor and I do already have a Hue bridge for all my lighting. I just seen that Eve had thread and was wondering if that would be the route to go. But, I have mostly hue stuff right now
I use an eve motion detect to turn on a hue strip light and turn it off after 1 min via HomeKit. It always turns on, but 50% of the time it does not turn it off. It seems HomeKit is not a serious piece of software, more of a toy.
@@TheBradLloyd I’m about to jump the gun on this or either the Eve Door & Window Sensor for my bedroom. If you were me, which one would you personally go with? I also don’t own a HomePod mini but I’ll get one in the coming months.
No "eve" hub, but you should still have a home hub to run your HomeKit automations (Apple TV HD or higher, HomePod, HomePod mini). If you have a HomePod mini or the latest Apple TV4K then bonus, because you can use Thread!
This eve motion sensor is junk. It took about 3 seconds before anything happened. I have eve room as well. My eero also supports thread, so what am I doing wrong?
it was better in the beginning, not the software is more limited. You can set minimum 5 seconds ( it was 2 instead in EVE) , so, it can't be use in a lot of scenarios with fast movements or more than one person in action in the same room. very disappointed, I lost my money and back to the Aqara P1 sensor, more reliable and 50% less in price ( and you can set 1sec minimum) . waiting for matter...
Happy with the Phillips hue ones. Haven't not worked once.
Lucky you - i have purchased two and can’t get the hub Connected
Not even philips techs can sort

Is there a way to make a automation such as “turn light on IF between 7-9pm AND lux is less than 10”?
All I’ve been able to see is one or the other
Question, can you trigger automations using Eve light sensor in Apple Homekit?
I have often found that in Canada Apple often has the best prices for HomeKit accessories. They have this motion sensor for $54.95 CAD.
Having issues with 2 of my 3 bundled Eve Motion Sensors. Batteries keep saying low and no matter how many times I change them , rest the motion sensor or delete them from the Eve app, they still say low battery. Contacted Eve and awaiting support. Worried.
My guess is that the low end of the temperature range is mostly based on the fact that the voltage on the batteries drops considerably below zero.
Great review again... but ouch that Canadian price. I think I'll wait to see if the price dips or a better deal comes along via Amazon.
Yeah, I hear you. I was hoping it would retail for $49.95 Canadian. Still worth the money though IMO.
