  • "Don't Be Cruel" was recorded at the same marathon studio session as "Hound Dog" and "Any Way You Want Me". Elvis was totally in charge, rewriting the piano arrangement and insisting on 28 takes. He also called for 31 takes of "Hound Dog".
When the latter song was released it quickly rose on the charts, peaking at #2 with sales over a million copies. Soon after, "Don't Be Cruel" surpassed "Hound Dog" and was #1 on all three of BILLBOARD's main surveys: Pop, Country, and R&B.
