    As a "player of sorts"of the Ukulele for since '21 , I decided to increase my madness , by starting to play a Bass Ukulele.........well, with the help of my buddies Justin , Shane and Steve, the mystery's of the Bass were revealed, slowly.
    Now I find that with enormous help of Ukulele Wales, and starting from the real beginning, the curtains are slowly lifting...... many thanks.

    Thank you so much for your fun and informative lessons! I received my U Bass today and I am totally in love with it. I wonder if I'll sleep at all tonight, as I am very excited. My U-bass is a J&D with white Aquila thundergut strings. It is the cheapest one I could find online (€ 149.00) because I am a beginner and didn't know if I could handle a bass with my arthritic hands with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome on both hands, but I found out now that I will totally be able to handle the bass. I have been exploring it this afternoon and went through your lessons 1 and 2, and will start lesson 3 tomorrow. I simply love your lessons! I can't thank you enough for those! Thank you. I have owned a bass ukulele for over a year, but I've never learned to play it because no one (until you) would explain how to play it. I took in-person baritone ukulele lessons for 6 months and he never explained to me what you have in 3 lessons on the bass. Yeah, different tuning but now I know how to find notes on my baritone. He only taught me chords and strumming. I learned the Travis Picking Method on my own but I have never known what notes I was picking. Thank you, again!

    I have only just discovered your tutorials. Absolutely brilliant. I read music and kinda know the theory of what the bass does, but this is so helpful for getting more confident with where the notes are. And for bass ukulele too, where you understand we are just needing some basics to help a group keep the beat. Many thanks x

    I’m a lifelong musician, trained in piano and voice, so I’m very familiar with the musical scale, but not at all familiar with how it translates onto stringed instruments. I took up the soprano uke in 2019 and learned chord shapes so I could jam with friends on Thursday nights. (It’s not a uke group though - the others play guitar, dobro, fiddle, mandolin). I thought maybe I should learn to play bass for when our bass player is missing, but I’m a small person with small hands, and I thought a U-bass would be a better fit than the acoustic bass guitar the host owns. So I bought one. And then … not knowing where to start, I just let it gather dust. I was also gifted an actual upright bass by a friend, and I would LOVE to play it because it would be PERFECT for our group, but talk about big! It hasn’t been played much, either, because I don’t know what I’m doing and it’s a daunting task to get it out of its case and set it up. But I have wanted so badly to play. Then the other day I thought, hey, why not get the bass uke out and at least learn some bass basics (bass-ics, ha ha) first? I searched online for bass ukulele tuning and happened upon your videos, which are FANTASTIC!! Your videos have been so, SO helpful. Your teaching style is wonderful and I love the practices and tests, and the little play-alongs. I will keep coming back to make sure I’m comfortable with where the notes are. I’m going to have great fun playing at the Thursday night jam this week, and I’m hoping it will make learning the upright bass easier by limiting the learning to just how to hold the darned thing, where to place my left hand, and eliminate the “where are the notes” panic. Thank you!!

    • @UkuleleWales
      @UkuleleWales  Год назад +1

      Thank You so much for your very lovely comment. Firstly great to hear you have a u-bass and are now starting to learn it. For the upright, it really is just a case of it being much bigger but the notes and strings are exactly the same so the ubass will definitely help.
      Try standing with the corner of the upright facing into your body, not the back of the bass or the side, if that helps.
      Once you get to grips a little more, have a look at the series of bass lessons on how to read music as these are actually based on an upright bass book and as you already play music, it might make even more sense to you.

    Hi. Really great lessons, I love the pacing and your presentation style. I'm currently part way through this one (L3) - I've got the hang of where the notes are but I still need to practice so I'm restarting the lesson each time from about 12 minutes in.
    The thing I need to ask about is my thumb positioning. I'm fine with remembering to place it at the back of the neck (not wrapping it around). But I find it really difficult to keep it at right angles to the neck (like you seem to be doing). It's much more comfortable (and easier for me to reach the notes with my fingers) if I keep my thumb parallel with the neck instead of at right angles.
    Is behind and parallel with the neck OK, or will it create difficulties as I progress? I don't want to get into bad habits now just because it's easier if it's likely to impede my playing later on.

    • @UkuleleWales
      @UkuleleWales  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the lovely comment and so glad you are enjoying and learning from the lessons.
      I think the most important thing is that you are comfortable when playing and if it feels wrong, stop. The reason I encourage keeping the thumb nice and loose is that you can actually stretch you fingers much further, if you thumb is pointing along the neck, this can restrict your finger movement. I'll try and do some more shorted focussed lessons and take a look at this further, in the meantime, do what works best for you and if it feels uncomfortable give me a shout.

    Does it matter which left finger I use to hold down the string? I’ve osteoarthritis in my fingers and my ring and little finger I struggle to bend. I’ve been playing along with my other fingers fine, but wondering if it’s more a of an issue as I progress? Love your vids - thank you! ( been playing a soprano Uke for years but struggling with chord shapes now because of fingers so thought I’d give bass a go!)

    • @UkuleleWales
      @UkuleleWales  2 года назад +1

      Hi Karen, normally I would suggest tring to use all you fingers but if your are limited with finger movement / strngth I'd say you do what ever suits you or what you are able to manage. It's more important you can play and enjoy than whether you are using "the correct finger".

    • @UkuleleWales
      @UkuleleWales  9 месяцев назад

      Hi Roger, I recommend just playing the root of the chord to start with so if the ukes are playing a C chord, just play a C on the bass or if they are playing a G7, just play a G. You can get more fancy by adding notes and rhythms when you get more confident.

      Great question. I am assuming you mean bass uke as no these would definitely not be suitable for “normal” ukes. You need to be very careful when put these round wound nylon cores on other bass ukes as I have heard of necks snapping / warping if there is no truss rod.
