That is a very neatly shot sealant bead, but if you don’t use the proper size caulk nice to tool it in, it won’t be 100% bonded to the substrate, and be able to pass a pull test. I work in the commercial world, so that has been burned into my habits and it’s how I teach the new guys. Also, your sealant width must be at least twice the depth for a proper cure. So if you have a skinny but deep joint, you must use backer rod foam to fill in the depth to get closer to the 2:1 width/depth ratio.
Not to exceed 1/2 inch in depth and the backer rod gives the bead the proper shape to withstand the movement of the joint but that is mostly exterior as interior stuff doesn't apply unless architectural
I'm a grandma and use a metal BBQ skewer to poke my caulking tube. The ring on my skewer lets me hang it up. Always in place. I didn't know there were caulking guns with pokers. Nice!
This is wrong and right. Some caulking says cut the tube end square and some on an angle. Self-tooling caulks require you to cut the tube end square and keep the gun 90 degrees to what you're caulking. Caulking is not static and one way across the board. I keep a bucket of water with a clean sponge and rag around and do use my finger. Just not in the self-leveling/tooling caulks. READ THE TUBE
you cut the angle of the tip depending on how deep or shallow you want the application. sealing a shower enclosure with clear silicone, as one example, is different than the material used and size of cracks and crevices at the structures exterior. instructions should read: Cut The Tip To Fit the Desired Application
Then how do you smooth where you stopped and there is a bump , lump whatever you want to call it. Do you use a damp cloth with your finger or how do you do it ?
I found over the years that there are many variables in applying caulking. The type of gun that is used. Air and tube temperature, the persons ergonomic vector, hand (squeeze pressure). The composition of the material (silicone, latex, or urethane). And the angle of cut on the tip. For me personally, I use about a ten to twenty degree cut. Where to cut on the tube with respect to the diameter application is a judgement call for me on the size of the gap. I also cut on the down slope, as not to leave a plastic “mini-flap” that may act as a squeegee and leave a mark or remove caulking causing an unsightly groove. The angle of the gun in application is paramount. As previously stated: this is what works for me. Other carpenters I know apply differently and have other considerations…..
i used PL sealant caulking for exterior. seems to hold up good. 3 years later switching between weathers and there is no cracking. paints over fine ont he little section i did. wondering if I should do my entire house and cover all nail holes with it

I use an Albion battery quart bulk gun and dry tools or tuck pointers for wet sealing. You really need to tool your material for proper bond! I wouldn’t know it’s all I’ve done since 1999!
I’ve been doing it since 1978. ALWAYS dry tool. There 100 bad videos on caulking for very 1 good one. And because the average homeowner doesn’t know any better, they follow these garbage videos and replace their sealant every couple of years. ( if it lasts that long) Or worse they think they did a good job because of these videos and suffer hundreds or thousands of dollars in water damage. Not tooling or using soapy water.Or any tooling aid. Not sure which is worse. All of these methods will fail. And leak. BTW I could never get used to the battery powered guns just couldn’t get the feel for them. Oddly enough I couldn’t shoot as nice of bead. Too many years with manual guns I guess.
I learned to poke my caulk, squeeze it in a butt joint, squeeze, and wipe off excess caulk on my hands... And anyone can handle and enjoy caulk with a little practice...Classic, those were his words...This channel needs to be rated...haha.

Hello Dave how are you doing 😊
This guy was funny and great.
Does thermoplastic caulking work best on vinyl siding since it's also a form of plastic? Can you spread it using a caulk spreading tool?
so do you use silicone or acrylic caulking for exterior siding
None of the above. Thermoplastic!
Silicones have better UV resistance for exterior applications
should I remove old caulking or caulk over it
