Your methods are awesome!! Easy to understand and practice, your teaching style is very positive and friendly, relaxed and always with a smile. Yours is the complete package. Happy that I found your site. Many thanks :>))
I've been looking for a channel like this for a long time - Yeah I can play a few tunes one may recognize, but I tend to be limitited to what I can recall from memorization and muscle memory for a handful of songs with no realization of it all. My girlfriend is stunned that I can play decent versions of "Blackbird" or "More than Words" but no pretty type versions of "Silent Night" or any number of Christmas tunes that I had to pass on this season. This channel looks promising and has already improved my playing and enthusiasm.
Ian, you're a great guitar instructor and please don't ever forget that, but more importantly, you come off as a great human being. Your positive attitude is infectious. Even when you're teaching something I'm already schooled in, I still love watching the video. There's always something to be learned from you, even beyond the lesson itself. You're not only a guitar instructor, but you're an example of how people should strive to compose themselves in general. You're truly a gift to the RUclips community and I wish you well in all of your endeavors. I don't mean to over-flatter, but it needs to be said (if it hasn't been already). Thank you!
You've got a new subscriber. I'm 33 and just started practicing hardcore. I've picked up a guitar several times throughout the years, but never gave it any actual effort. Now I am, and I'm soooo glad I found your channel. Your videos are great, and make me WANT to play my guitar. Thank you so much!
Not always a fan of technology, but in a time when a great teacher can reach the whole world via internet, I’m thankful. Love the philosophical nuggets
If you want to learn to play guitar and are just starting out, this is exactly the way to start. You will be more apt to continue and will immediately feel like you are making progress. While music theory and scales are important, staring with those things usually results in beginners giving up prematurely.
I am grateful for finding your video. I believe paradise, if it exists, it will be filled with people like you who likes to share your knowledge to others. Thanks Chief. Cheers from Indonesia.
I've had that exact thing happen. I was practicing strumming chords in the same key and someone thought I was playing someone else's song. lol This is how I taught myself. I played chord progressions in the same key over and over and over with a metronome. Thanks for these great lessons, Ian. You're the best!
I am between a beginner and a intermediate player. I've watched hundreds of videos. Never have I watched someone that explains things the way you do. You truly have a gift for teaching. Just started watching your videos and believe they're going to make a big difference in my playing. Thanks man!!)
100% correct - play chord progressions, particularly if they follow a song. It's as simple as that. Excellent work Ian. Hey beginners, and we have all been there - listen this guy.
I just found your channel, and it's amazing! I've been playing a bit of guitar here and there for a couple of years, but I never really gotten into it. I've practiced all the basic chords, but I was just doing the same boring drills instead of making music. This single video made me realise I have the skills to make music and play simple songs. Now I just love playing guitar! And on top of this, you're such a good teacher and your videos are so fun to watch!
Well placed discussion to talk about, in a sense, the mental acceptance of the "philosophy" of music & of learning. Sometimes I can't insist of myself that I practice for twenty minutes BUT if I just reach over & tune up my instrument, then give some clean strums of tuned strings...I may relax & play a bit more!
I have been playing scales and learning the notes of solos I like so I can pluck away at the notes for over a year. Now this video and your recent solo 16th note rhythm time signature combinations videos have finally made me start to make noises resembling music.... thank you so much for effecting my playing experience in such a positive way !
Not only are you very good at being specific and simple simultaneously, you are also great at encouraging the viewer of their natural underlying abilities. Thank you for this great video, you've earned another subscriber. Time to practice!
I’ve seen many, many of Ian’s videos. And as a beginner, many of his videos cover concepts that are too advanced for me. (at present). This is possibly the BEST video I’ve ever seen for us beginners. I love Ian’s explanations. His analogies are so incredibly on point. And his playing is soooo melodic. So this lesson touched on timing ( my current weakness) & chords that fit in a particular key. Most excellent. I’ve been guilty of buying a chord book and I don’t recall it laying out the chords like Ian just did. Forever indebted, man. Thanks so much.
I really enjoy your videos. My Dad played when I was a kid and I always wanted to learn. Unfortunately I waited until I retired to start learning. I know my biggest problem is practicing! I took some lessons to help me get started. Right now I have about 12 chords down, and my instructor started me on learning to read notes. I like your strumming method and need more help with that. I know, practice practice practice!!!
Thanks Ian. You give me lots of hope and make it easy to fulfill that hope in learning how to play better. More so, to create music. I started putting melody to a poem and it is sounding good because of the simplicity of your teaching. I’m a follower now and will be in your online classes soon
I’ve always been the singer/songwriter...always wanted to play guitar as well. I’ve been playing about 3 months now. I grew up in music and AM NOT GENRE SPECIFIC. I love music...PERIOD. Of all the lessons I’ve taken and watched to this point, you sir, are an enlightening wonderment everyone should behold. Thank you for what you do. I wish I could sit in the same room with you and learn. You’re amazing!!!
When I was a kid I was watching Carlos Santana. Carlos is a receiver and he is tapping into this signal from the universe. The signal flows through him. Into his heart chakra and out through his hands. I first met him when I was 10 years old. 51 years later he told me he would have to be high to remember it. For real.
Hi Stich, you're a great instructor, thanks for helping me to get better at guitar, we can't forget that first of all we must have a good time when playing, when i started as a beginner i was tense and nervous, you make me feel confident and relaxed
Ian, you have just the right temperament & attitude for teaching guitar to impatient guitar students like me. This lesson covered something I've been entirely missing out on, and so, I really appreciate the chord progression chart you offer here for free!.
Been playing for decades but this kind generous Dude's approach and love of Music is refreshing and inspiring...I'm Def still learning every day with these Fun teaching methods. Sooo talented as a Tutor, Musician and delivers in a great humorous laid-back and self-effacing manner which spookily makes me remember most everything he teaches/say's...ha ha. Bring's to mind of a Dylan song he taught on here way back....so entertaining, loved every minute of it and I soon nailed the song. ha. A Rare true and free spirit. Thank You Stitch... Best Teacher ever on YT.
It should be mandatory for every beginner guitar player to watch this video. A very powerful lesson, taught very well, that will get people creating music very quickly
I would just like to say...thank you so much for your presence and approach in teaching and sharing your view of learning and playing guitar. I have been playing for several years and have lately felt as if I am stuck in a rut. I have watched several “RUclips teachers “ out there and they all seemed hurried to give you just little bits and pieces leaving you without the “full story” or lesson. Or try to overwhelm you with things you might not understand quite yet, like theory or something of that nature. However, you show in this video exactly what it is to know and learn without rushing and just making it fun to want to learn. Thank you for doing what you do. I certainly enjoyed watching and learning from you.
This channel is by far the best instruction I've ever seen on RUclips. You sir have a gift and an ability to break things down in a digestible way that is easy to follow and understand Thank you!
Ian as you say work diligently and work these combination as you teach us! There may not be a guitar god but we are blessed to have a world class person in you teaching us!!
When I was 59, I re-entered a polytech to study a certificate program with predominantly 20- somethings & I never revealed my true age...did fine, got a new job & career AND a new friend, "music". This is because I watched zero television but instead practiced chords & music as a study break. Music is still with me as a friend !
First time I’ve come across your channel, decided to learn guitar at 35 I’m 37 now and playing loads. I’m just about to look at starting to write my own stuff, just to say I did it once in my life really and this has been a big help. Thank you
Just discovered your channel yesterday and man your passion is inspiring. It's absolutely clear that you enjoy playing but you also love to teach. Thank you for putting all of these amazing lessons together, my mind is being blown by all of these revelations I've had over the last day.
Came across your channel a few days ago and find your way of teaching has helped me to progress already. I've been in guitar limbo for a while now but since watching your lessons I've gained a fresh outlook at learning guitar. Many Thanks
Thank you or explaining it all to clearly. It all is making sense to me now and I'm sure I will be playing beautifuly pretty soon. In fact, I was thinking it would take me years, looking at all the great players out there 🙂. You are the best! Thank you!
You have a nice way of teaching, not too much and not too little, and with a winning smile. May I just add one thing: The circle of fifths (a version with major and minor notes) shows very easily what chords go together, just pick one note and the five neighbors go well with it.
Glad you put this out there! I have done this by accident just learning songs. It really helps with cord changes, like you said chords are grouped in keys. Doesn't make sense to practice chords that don't go together, cuz you're never gonna change between them! ✌️
I am thrilled to have stumbled upon this video. Like many others I have learned a good deal of theory a tried to play songs. But I prefer to play music, nice and simple like here. Your teaching style is very welcoming, you have a new subscriber.
I have learned more from RUclips in the last year than any guitar tutor have ever taught me,and they say dont go to RUclips for inspiration, most of the tutors I had in my teens and twenties were only holding me back happy to keep taking my money.Dont believe the hype. One of my tutors had me playing chords over and over again until I got really bored to the point I threw my guitars to one side until recently at 50 years of age I am finally moving on !With the help of these people like this gentleman, thank you Sir!
Like many others who fancy ourselves as far beyond these concepts, I am humbled by it and kind of in awe - and it was the early lesson I needed most and what I ended up learning in a much harder way eventually. Stitch is a well of truth , kids. Listen up. 😎🎚🔊
Ian, you latest tutorials have been at another level! This lesson is so important if you're a beginner. Even if you're an old coffin dodger like me, you can still get something out of it. Even if it's just a reminder to practice more. Thanks so much. Kevin O'Rourke
Haha! "Coffin Dodger"! I mean, aren't we all, on some level...right?! But, all the best dodging that surly grip Death has on us all - I hope you live to strum for many yrs to come, guitar-brother! ✌️😎
Bass guitar gave me the foundation I needed to learn the guitar, my dad showed me that each chord has a "family" and it stuck with me into my learning the guitar. Great video!!!!
When I'm nearing the end of practicing, I tend to Noodle around doing what you have on the video, finding chords in the same key and just having fun trying out different chord patterns/timing. Great Advise!!
Just a great sight and this makes guitar practice so much more fun! Focus with a purpose and enjoying the fruits of the practice session simultaneously.
It takes a special person to be an effective teacher, and you are one of those Ian. Thanks for explaining how I can substitute usable chords for those Diminshed ones at the end of the Key signature.
What a great lesson you’ve imparted. I think one of my teachers (in the wayback) mentioned this but never demonstrated it so clearly and simply. Thanks… Man.
Thank you sincerely. You are an out of this world music teacher. I just started learning guitar a few months ago and broke my strings 10 times. Got really frustrated. There is no luthier where I live and I can't find good quality strings either. I live in a village in India. I have finally learned how to string my guitar. I will now pick up my guitar and re string it with the cheap strings, so I can practice these chords and start making music.😊💕💞💕💞💕
Hey stitch. Great channel. I am a viola player going to the dark side. You are an excellent teacher. I am a beginner looking forward to moving from playing 1 or 2 strings to 6 strings. Love the sound of that.
Yes for us impatient peeps out here, you are totally right, say at 840, when you can play that, let the notes ring out, smooth chord to chord changes, what ever pace that you prefer, when you get that trip down, yep then like you are improving, thankyou,
I just learned more techniques, and just rhythm pointers from you in one day that i did in one year of just trying to play songs, i can pick up my 6 string and just have fun. No set song or rhythm just playing in time!
Thank you for teaching future guitarist the right way to practice and to play with style and rules. I felt lost along time ago when I first picked up a guitar, but if I would of had you showing me about the guitar and how it works, root notes and practicing keys, rythems, octaves etc.. instead of me just trying to learn this song and that song I would of been playing on a stage instead of not really knowing what I was doing for the longest time. I know now, but I truly needed you back then. Great lesson Ian. Thank you.
As always, great lesson. That substitution of the G7 for the Bm7b5 is interesting. Not exactly the same notes, but close enough for government work. I love the rhythm and counting beats portions of the lesson.
Thank you Ian! Because of this video, my family no longer cringes in agony when I bring out my guitar to practice. My wife asked me how I got so much better so fast. I told her I am a guitar God😂😂 No but seriously I told her it was this video lesson that changed everything. Play in Key!! Thanks man. I can’t wait to meet you in town sometime. I see Sean at Clever Cup often and I met Andres and his family there too. Thanks again for sharing your passion. Bryan Suter
Gaining a lot from these videos, been practicing chords for the last couple weeks. Really love your vibe too, and you do a great job explaining and keeping things sounding great! Thanks for this!!
I studied theory in my own file a while. I'm still learning but aren't wer all. I can play well and have songe skill but You helped me finally under stand modes, when I watched the last video about playing the A mixolydian. Thanks.
Free Chart Available Here: bit.ly/2XFGJbb It simply lists the chords in some keys to practice with and some words of wisdom.
You look like my Rabbi 🕎✡️👍👍👍😄😄
Thanks, Ian, this is great!

Thanks Ray
I'm struggling through a series guitar rut at the moment
there are a lot of people on youtube that can show us how to play a song on guitar but YOU good sir are a TEACHER. GREAT VIDEO
That was simply AWESOME!!! Thank you Stitch!! (And thanks for the chart also....)
I second that

Greetings...thank you, Ian for the "free chart". This video is so helpful, and I know will bring much joy in learning.👍
Kindness from Australia.
Your voice is so calm it instills peace for the beginners rather than anxiety. Thankyou. Can you make video on worship rhythm / music
Been noodling for a couple of years. So glad I found your site. Finally, at 80 yrs old I have hope of getting "unstuck"! Thank you!
I’ve always been the singer/songwriter...always wanted to play guitar as well. I’ve been playing about 3 months now. I grew up in music and AM NOT GENRE SPECIFIC. I love music...PERIOD. I'm older than you and have been practicing guitar for over 50 years but I'm still going to watch your video!

Love your videos man, I'm left handed so it makes it even harder but I have learned so much from you. I'm 61 and can actually play songs. Loving it.
I’m a 76yo lefty and just found this channel. Such a good teacher.
hey-thanks for the help-I'm a beginner and I'm 66 years old-wish me luck!!
Great! I wish you not just luck, but hard work, patience and discipline. That's what I need to learn too, afterall,
I have you beat, Janet - I'm 70! Ha ha!
I am 68 keep going God bless!!!

You have a nice way of teaching, not too much and not too little, and with a winning smile. May I just add one thing: The circle of fifths (a version with major and minor notes) shows very easily what chords go together, just pick one note and the five neighbors go well with it.

Great to hear from you Kevin!
Kevin O'Rourke The Coffin Dodgers is a great band name!

Thank you. Really appreciate your content. So easy to watch it over and over again.
Just a great sight and this makes guitar practice so much more fun! Focus with a purpose and enjoying the fruits of the practice session simultaneously.

Awesome. Stuff is starting to make sense. Good job.
Dude, that was very cool. Simple but sweet.😎
i love your teaching! You are really God sent.
I loved how you explained the key chords and strumming ..I stopped practice years ago,but I just might try again...thanks...

This is the first time I have ever given a shit about learning the chords of a key. Granted, I’m a drummer. But seriously nice explanation.
Rhabdo B 😂 So am I!! (This is my lockdown project!)
Thank you Ian. Love your lessons.
Love your laid-back Style. Great lesson dude. Thanks for sending out those Good Vibrations.

Thank you.
I have watched this video a couple of time and it's brilliant for new players
You are an amazing teacher. Something very unique on your channel. God bless you
As always, great lesson. That substitution of the G7 for the Bm7b5 is interesting. Not exactly the same notes, but close enough for government work. I love the rhythm and counting beats portions of the lesson.
Wonderful lesson. Thankyou ever so much.
Bryan Suter
nice one, ian. thanks!
Your lessons are fantastic and you have a wonderful understanding of essential teachings for those of us trying to grasp guitar playing 👍
Wow finally found someone that opened the door...thank you so much..changed my outlook..will follow this path.

Ian your approach to teaching is great!!
Thanks Mark, honestly I take it from a Human Being teaching a Human Being approach and I’m so glad you enjoy it!
Gaining a lot from these videos, been practicing chords for the last couple weeks. Really love your vibe too, and you do a great job explaining and keeping things sounding great! Thanks for this!!
Very Welcome. Thanks for enjoying
Thank you very much this will have me practicing much more and longer 👍
Wow I don’t normally comment on these videos but crikey this is a true light bulb moment in practicing chords. Well done Sir 🖐
I studied theory in my own file a while. I'm still learning but aren't wer all. I can play well and have songe skill but You helped me finally under stand modes, when I watched the last video about playing the A mixolydian. Thanks.
Thank you for this most important lesson.
This was f*cking beautiful man - just what I needed to hear. Stoked I found your channel. Really enjoying your vids 🎸 cheers
