About This Video:
In the 6 years since I developed the first forge blower ( • Primitive Technology: ... ) I had made very few improvements to it's design. So I decided to do some research and development to see if I could improve it's efficiency. From my research, increasing the number of fan blades from 4 to 8 yielded an increase of 19% volume of airflow. So I set about building a better fan. Instead of splitting the rotor and inserting blades made of bark into it, I made spokes from split cane to hold the blades leaving the rotor intact. This increased the longevity of the rotor as well as the spokes being heavier contributing more momentum, assisting the impeller in winding back in the other direction after each rotation. Instead of bark being used to for the blades, simple (and easier to find) folded leaves formed the blades. These, being flexible, are less likely to break against the walls of the housing as stiff bark does. Finally, a lid was added to the housing to make maintenance easier. The new blower works better than the old one with more airflow occurring. I experimented with different numbers of blades on the impeller (4,6 and 8). The more blades used, the slower the impeller can be spun to produce the same airflow. This makes it easier to operate as the users arms don't have to move as quickly, making it more ergonomic. This conservation of effort will be important in iron smelting later.
About Primitive Technology:
Primitive technology is a hobby where you build things in the wild completely from scratch using no modern tools or materials. These are the strict rules: If you want a fire, use a fire stick - An axe, pick up a stone and shape it - A hut, build one from trees, mud, rocks etc. The challenge is seeing how far you can go without utilizing modern technology. I do not live in the wild, but enjoy building shelter, tools, and more, only utilizing natural materials. To find specific videos, visit my playlist tab for building videos focused on pyrotechnology, shelter, weapons, food & agriculture, tools & machines, and weaving & fiber.

I love this channel so much. With so many copycats out there secretly using construction equipment, or building unsustainable things like swimming pools without filters, every upload from Primitive Technology feels like an oasis of wholesomeness.
Yeah there were some strange trends that started from this genre. I’m glad the OG keeps it simple and practical.
They could always enter a pump and a filter inside the pool but it would be kind of inefficient because it's not installed in a more efficient location
My only complaint though is that John still uses a fire stick than the bow fire drill he made before.
@@krislarsen6546 its supposed to be primitive stupid, meaning no modern technology!
SunnyV2 made a video about it. Go check him out now
Clay was indeed the miracle product of the pre-metal world. It had so many uses as a tool and container, and could literally be made to resist it's natural functions by using fire to harden it past the point wind and erosion would destroy it.
Pottery and the capacity to not only store water but also boil it to make it both safe to drink but also to cook one's vegetables and meat and make good soups are indeed one of humans best discoveries.
It must have caused an explosion in innovation, like a huge shift in materials science would for us today. "What can we make out of this awesome new stuff? EVERYTHING!"

without jokes he can pretty much do anything we used to do before the industrial age. it would be really time consuming to do so but it would be entertaining. If he made bigger bricks he would be able to build his own castle in 30 years.
The silicon part may not be too bad, but distilling boron and phosphorous (or arsenic/gallium) for use as dopants would probably present a challenge.

Does a rusty iron or copper oxide Schottky diode count? What about a cat’s whisker diode using galena or some other natural mineral? With spark gaps and a bit of work you can make all sorts of high-power electronics without even using vacuum tubes, though I’ll have to say they’re noisy.

the only time when using feet etc as measurement is acceptable is if you are in the fucking stone age
This is honestly incredible. You're essentially rediscovering (Or reinventing perhaps) the origins of the stuff we take for granted!
Not to mention you could literally connect the spinning mechanism to a primitive form of watermill to have hands-free bellows! All you'd need it a method of stopping it when necessary!
the eight wheel design could probably function as a water wheel with some reinforcement and maybe slanting the paddles a bit so the water slides off them... i wonder if from there basic electricity production can be made, im no expert but isnt electricty produced when copper has a strong rotating magentic field? or did i hit my head to hard and things start bluring?
I just want to let you know how much your videos actually mean to me. Ive been watching your peaceful, very knowledgeable videos for years now. I was so upset when you stopped for awhile. But I'm beyond happy you started again. Thank you so much for giving me something new to watch. Please keep it up, because your honestly amazing.
As always, you've proven that true quality content requires no talking and music.
Agreed. Most YTers seem to come from a TV education where they despise what they call "Dead Air" when no noise is produced. But the "Dead Air" here is full with the sounds of the local environment and his actions.
@@bobmcbob4399 Unfortunately, majority of RUclips environment is filled with non-"Dead Air" content which usually are mostly either approval-seeking or if not all, then mainly comprising of entertainment components. All these are sadly driven by demand for more "interesting" videos which slowly kills off the real deals. Just looking back at this category of aptly named "Primitive Technology", the number of channels that popped up attempting to do something similar is astounding. However, if you have watched those channels, their videos are filled with nothing but aesthetic works that provide neither real meaning, emphasis nor explanation on the technologies that were utilized in the process. What irks me most is that some of them had the audacity to use the word "Primitive" in their channel when the focus in their content has nothing primitive about it.

While I know it isn't always as ergonomic, I would love to see this combined with the pump stick method (wide stick with a hole drilled through and the ends tied to the ends of the cordage. It goes on the shaft so the impeller can be driven with a simple pump downwards on the stick). Great stuff, excited for metallurgy!
Pretty sure he's made one of those before
Figured he no longer does that because it only wears the stone bearing so much faster from the extra downward force.
@@eien1107 My thoughts too. The friction is good for creating heat to make a fire but counter-productive when you just want to move air while expending the least amount of energy. He could use some sticks (placed in a V-shape, standing up on the lid) and hold them halfway up while the string are tied to the tops to investigate if having your hands do less travelling sideways (by using a lever basically) is doable, comfortable and less tiring.

Great work John. I noticed you made a slight change in style with the way you explain through captions. The descriptions are even clearer now, which is incredible, because they where already amazingly transparent and to the point. The attention to detail that led to that touch of showing a comparison between three different impellers is one of the things that make your work unique.
We can also see a slight increase in overall pace with faster cuts. I think this is deliberate to differentiate himself from the crowd of Primitive Channels who make long videos, PT wants to stay concise and skip everything that isnt necessary.

This channel never ceases to amaze me. It's not just seeing you recreate and enact these techniques, but also realizing just how brilliant and innovative our ancestors could truly be.
So many people think that just because they didn't have as much technology as we do, they were stupid. Furthest thing from the truth. It's always impressive to see that play out on this channel.
My nephew was at my place and together (with the help of your videos) we managed to create....one brick.
The brick is now on a shelf in his bedroom and he defends it with his life. It took us the whole weekend and of course we cheated a bit, but thank you for making this experience possible for us. You made me a very cool uncle, and him a VERY proud 8 year old
Man I just can't express enough how much I enjoy watching you work and your ingenuity! Thanks!
Things are picking up it seems! Aside from the metallurgy, which I'm excited for, would also love to see more food and agriculture/cultivation based videos. The arrowroot flour video from a few years back was really interesting to watch! I know those videos in particular take especially long (months in-between other videos for things to grow), but would still love to see more, similar content and ideas in future videos.
Keep up the great work!
Agriculture requires quite a lot of time, taking care of the plants and stuff, I kind of doubt he will make big agricultural projects. But I would be excited for that, for sure. It takes months for plants to be ready for harvest so people always plant lot so they can eat all the year.
Now he just needs to get a wife, and let her breed with him, while they live out in the woods together while she is pregnant.
It will be like watching civilization.
Was excited for the metallurgy too awhile back but then he stopped, why is that? would be cool to see him make something out of the metal
@@bicnertion7606EDIT: And then he just had to go and make me look like an asshole in the next video. How selfish of him.
I think it's because he moved. Also, the way he was getting iron (from pond scum) is not very efficient and is probably not really capable of producing workable quantities of metal. I know when he bought his new property, he purposefully made sure it was a prime location with lots of natural resources for making his videos, and I wouldn't be surprised if this included some sort of ore deposits or at least some kinda rocks with enough metal to be useable on a very small scale (even if it wasn't enough to make commercial mining worthwhile)
Watch him prove me wrong, though, and the next video is him making gigantic man-made ponds where he starts farming the damn orange algae.

These videos bring tears to my eyes because they show me in a way the society that we could have been. How he conserves instruments, and how nature is valuable, everything. Seeing him using his body as unit of measurement makes me think of Le Corbusier's Modulor and the way leafs and even soft bark is useful makes me think of the indigenous people of Brazil.
