I'm hooked!!!! Your videos are endlessly informative! I wish I were younger and more handy! I used to knit as a kid and until life got complicated! Now in late 70's I'm no longer able to knit or afford to knit!
Hello Lisa, you truly are the soulful spinner. As I watched your video I was reflecting on the gentleness you bring with you and how you truly touch my soul. I’m sure this is true for many, many of your subscribers. Many thanks for bringing such gentleness to our lives in such turbulent times. Bless you.
Lovely to see you back in channel Lisa. Congratulations on your retirement now you can enjoy your crafting and processing. I look forward to watching what you achieve.
Great “lesson” Lisa, once a teacher, always a teacher. Looking forward for more; I buy/read books you recommend, spindles you show ;-) some episodes I watch over and over. Such a wealth of information…
Lisa! Welcome back! I’ve missed you. You have such a way with explaining things. You’re funny, very thorough, easy to listen to and follow. You must have been the best teacher! So happy you’re back.
I’m with you on this being such a slow process. I just keep thinking how can I go faster, create more. I think part of that is loving the resulting yarn and wanting to use it. Another part is I feel like I’m a spinner who try’s to knit. I find so much joy, peace, fulfillment in spinning for spinnings sake.
Thank you for sharing! I love to process wool. There's something wonderful to take a raw fleece, skirt, pick, wash and prep for spinning. Merino is one of the hardest to clean I think.. It's harder to get the lanolin off than most sheep breeds. I've even washed it lock by lock haha. My favorite prep is to comb the locks, then put them on the hackle and draw off into a long roving. I prefer woolen spuns fluffy warmth. Granted I just made a nice worsted prep. So I spin from the fold and get that loft back using lovely prepared fibers I can control easily. Thank you so much for putting this out there for us!
Amen sista, crafting should not be a source of anxiety! Everything we do in the crafting world takes time and we enjoy it, why do we want to rush through it to get to the next project? I'm with you. Love your "works in progress"!!!
Lisa! Thank you for reviewing my "YarnWorks" book on your vlog. I just heard about it through one of your subscribers. What a nice review! Thank you so much for sharing your washing process. I seem to be amassing quite a collection of fleeces and love to see how spinners approach the process. Thanks for your wonderful podcast today! I have been washing a fleece this last week. Although I have used Dawn in the past as it is economical-- I will give the Kookabura scour a try. The book - Yarn Works sounds great - maybe my library has it. Happy spinning!!
Hi Lisa, happy retirement! We all want to do all the things! I've been spinning 3 years and have loved seeing your process of scouring the merino fleece. I'm in Australia and it's easy to get here and I have several fleeces to scour, prepare, spin and knit. I've also been lucky to scour/spin mohair and alpaca recently. Thank you for your video! I'm a new subscriber.
Thank you and welcome to the channel. Merino and alpaca makes a beautiful blend. There is just so much to experiment with and learn about in spinning. Take care 💕
As usual, really enjoyed every part of your podcast! Including your singing - thanks for including that! I'm 15 years into my retirement from teaching and have enough fibre/yarn to last another 15 years LOL. I really look forward to your podcasts - so glad to know that there will be more!
Lisa, you should see how many projects I have going!! It feeds my soul so it is all good. I have 3 Gotland fleeces that I need to clean but I’m nervous that I might felt it. It was good watching you clean your fleece. I’m going to have to try it the way you do it. So glad to see you back!!
Try a small quantity to feel comfortable first. It really isn’t THAT easy to felt your fleece. Some are more ready felters than other, but as long as you don’t agitate in hot water it should be fine. I do find if it’s an extremely hot, sunny, windy day a drying fleece can felt. I had that happen to a Shetland cross I had one year. So sheltered spots are best. Good luck and let me know how it goes!
If you like Alexander McCal Smith, I would suggest Maisie Dobbs, the psychologist and investigator series by Jacqueline Winspear. Very humane and lots of historical context. Delightful to read!
I love the socks you finished. they look amazing. also I have to agree that kitchener stitch can be difficult to get proficient at. I'm still not proficient in it. I also used to knit socks toe-up just because kitchener stitch was daunting to me, while a friend who is an avid sock knitter was surprised at how easily i picked up the Judy's magic cast on, because she found that daunting. its interesting how that happens.
Yes. Judy’s magic cast on is a mystery to me. I like the cuff down method so I know how long to make the foot. Everything is hard before it’s easy, right? 💕
Wow, I absolutely love your singing voice! Your videos are so full of good and useful information - I am enjoying your content very much! Greetings from Germany!
Loved this show. Thank you. I hear you when you talk about the time to do things - that you want to do everything. I've been fortunate to have been working from home for the past two years and have just returned to the office full time; it is a four-hour commute to and from work for me per day and I am finding I'm feeling too tired to do anything crafty at the end of the day. It is frustrating. As a sock knitter, I use the Finchley graft instead of the Kitchener. Check out Kelly at The Tangled Stitch for a great video tutorial. I like it better than the Kitchener - it's easier and has a nicer finish, in my opinion. Thanks again for the great podcast. So informative and interesting to watch!
Great episode! I learned so much, especially on how you clean your fleece. I also ordered Yarn Works as I haven't found a good guide for blending. I have some BFL top and Tussah silk that I am experimenting with, but I think my blend percentages are incorrect and the resulting yarn is not what I want. Thank you for this resource!
Thanks Lisa, another lovely session!! My book Hand Spinning by Pam Austin arrived in the post today 😍... I will be spending the next while strolling through it. Thanks for the recommendation ❤️
Enjoyed the podcast as always. Your shawl is beautiful and coming along nicely! I so know that feeling of picking up a project and trying to figure out where you are.
Lisa, to let you know that that's my sister's name as well. We also have many teachers in our family 👪. When the family get together, we hear enteresting stories from them . Juiley, is retired and she is very buys sewing things for others in town . I like your drop spindles. My question is how 🤔 do you take things off the spindles? I had someone said us a Drinking straw. When I tried it I end up with a mess. Could you please 🙏 do a video 📹 on how to take things off your full spindles. I also like to see you with the brown fleece spin it on the wheel on the fold. Thanks to see 👀 on there again.
That’s a great idea Timothy. I’ll make a short video on how I take the yarn off my spindles. There will definite be more videos and various ways to spin the merino. I’ll add from the fold to the list! Yes, teachers are full of stories, funny, sad and everything between!
So enjoying your video - beautiful summer feel of the outdoor footage (I love how the sun plays on the grass through the leaves), rush of memories (my granny had a small sheep farm, we used to get knitteed items from her, also the tin tub - we used to splash around with my cousin in the bigger version of it in summer :o)). I do not spin myself, I am more a sewing and cross stitching person, but I do like the style of the videos. How is your piano doing? And may I say, although I am not a pet person, your dog is impressive!
Beautiful memories! Thank you for sharing them. 🥰. My piano playing is coming along. I am learning a piece from Ludovico Einaudi I want to play in an upcoming video. If I am brave enough. 💕
@@SoulfulSpinning Please do, Einaudi is so beautiful. I am trying to keep up my lessons, too😉also the book talk was a good idea. Wishing you a very nice summer!
Very frustrating when someone sees a finished item I or my wife created and ask if we would consider making them one and finish by saying how much would you charge me. First of all it's our love of the hobby we enjoy fabric art as an enjoyment with no thought for profit or making items to sell, creating such items such as rugs hats, gloves, socks, sweaters, and even coat liners for the grand kids it is simply a personal desire to provide for our family. 2nd as you mentioned it is a lengthy process to come up with a finished item which although is the joy of creating it is not a time sensitive process to create what we desire. I'm not sure if others have experienced actually offending people by saying no to the question would you make me one but it makes us almost fearful to share what we have done in hopes that others will appreciate the creativity of our hobby.
Again , You comeback at this video. Dear Lisa Baker. You can make beautiful spindle , fiber, knit spinning., Thank for you.

Lisa, I think we, of a 'certain age' have spent most of our adult lives in a culture that says our success is judged on how much we produce, whether it's at work, at home, our hobbies, etc. But when we feel the inward pressure to push harder or faster, we lose the valuable experiences we get from the slow and deliberate process. I know that when I slow down, relax, and enjoy the process of working with the fleece and then making the yarn, my mind clears of clutter, my stress dissipates, and I find a wonderful sense of peacefulness.

I’m so glad. It’s a wonderfully book that I continue to return to!
Enjoyed the podcast as always. Your shawl is beautiful and coming along nicely! I so know that feeling of picking up a project and trying to figure out where you are.
Yes, it’s the consequences of dropping a project. There’s a lesson in there. Not that I’m going to learn from it 😝.
❤❤❤❤
Hi a lovely pidcast as always. Thank you. Do you have any oppinion about how the shetlabd sicks hold up after a few month of wearing?
Thank you
Is there any way to save the lanolin? Just wondering
I think so. I am going to attempt it with my next fleece.
I have two Polish Pottery coffee mugs that I drink from every morning, you can see from my last name, I am Polish.
Now I want more. They are so beautiful in the hand.
Dawn works well for scouring if you can’t afford these expensive products.
Yes! I had a fleece with dried and hardened lanolin and Dawn took care of it quite well. Thanks for the reminder.
I do 2 washes and two rinses, or 1wash and 2 rinses. Used no more than you with the Dawn.
And why put your wool to dry out in the shade? Makes no sense.
