Hi, I just went to Black Sheep Gathering in Oregon and watched Judith MacKenzie judge fleeces (for hand spinning). It was, as always, my favorite thing to do at wool festivals except for buying fleece. (hahaha) I just wanted to pass along my lightbulb moment. I had never heard this before but Judith said that the sun bleached tips cause pilling and neps. She suggested cutting them off with scissors. I use the Clemes and Clemes Pop Lock. That tool was a game changer for me. I love processing fleece and love watching your videos. I'm glad you retired; I hope that means we will see you throughout the entire year. Happy Tour de Fleece!
Fascinating. I do not cut off the sun bleached tips. In my first ever raw-to-F/O, I had lovely sun bleached flecks in the resulting yarn/garment, like a tweed. Loved it. (This was hand carded.). When I comb locks with sun bleached tips, any neps come off in the combs, while retaining the sun bleached color, and what I get as a result is a lovely "halo" of lighter color-- like a sheen. Love that too.
@@manicspinner1959 I know exactly what you mean about the tips adding to the fiber. I think I will only cut the tips if they are weak or if I’m processing a fine fiber. I love when fiber has color variation.

Lisa, I just wanted to THANK YOU! I recently started spinning again after a few long years. I found your RUclips channel and went no further. Your videos are so inspiring, yes, I dare say, exciting. I am also self-taught. I belong to a spinning guild now. I am/was a shepherdess with Icelandic sheep darlings and actually worked in a fiber mill for a while. Spinning is like learning a new language. Practice and time but you need someone else who speaks that language to really learn it. I weave on a triloom but maybe, just maybe, I will be learning to knit soon because of your influence. I can't wait to go to the Rhinebeck NY fiber festival this year. You should see my list! BTW my current spin (semi Lopi) is my black Icelandic ram Leif blended with fur from my Icelandic sheepdogs. I spin mostly on an 18" Turkish Spindle with a square shaft weighing over 2 oz. from Clemes and Clemes (we believe) I have never seen another one like it. I’m hoping my weaving and spinning guild will over a beginning class once fair season is over. In the meantime I’m on the hunt for a wheel and carding supplies. Even tho this video was a year or so ago I found it very helpful. I do crafting / hobbies. I spin wool, weave hook rugs, sew etc. I find this textile stuff so relaxing. That is beautiful wool! I was thinking about buying a carder. Nothing big. Question if you could answer. Do they make electric carders that can also be used manually? Love your spinning wheel. I so enjoy sitting outside under a nice shade tree in the summer and do my spinning. So relaxing.

Nice. The music fit. We are headed to the cleaners with 140lbs of 8” wool from our Leicester Longwool sheep next month! They grow it so fast we have to shear twice per year! We look forward to getting back the roving to spin!

You inspired me to try spinning and in the last six months I have washed and spun half a Romney fleece, tried Gotland, Polworth, Arapawa, Alpaca and Angora,, All combed with a pet brush, time, consuming but loving the whole process.

Hi Lisa, I really enjoyed watching this process as I'm also washing a merino fleece I bought locally in Cooma, Australia. Where did you buy your doffing pin from please? My second hand electric drum carder didn't come with a doffer and I'm using a flat head screwdriver!
@@SoulfulSpinning I’ve heard if you let the scouring water cool after you remove the fleece, the lanolin rises to the top and you can scrape it off. Kind of like fat in a soup. I haven’t tried it-I’m still gathering the courage to wash my first fleeces that I’ve collected.

Yes, it is. I think it’s an early model set up either scotch tension. It was used when I stumbled upon it!

My yarn always twists on itself how if yours not doing that when you let it wind
You might try putting less twist in by increasing your ratio and slowing your feet. Let the yarn wind in fairly quickly, too. 🤞
