Michael Schumacher Breaking Lap Record on First Flying Lap

  • At the 2004 Australian Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher broke the race lap record on his first flying lap of the first practice session. His next lap broke the track record. A pity that wasn't captured.
Who needs practice? Other than Barrichello, the rest were absolutely nowhere.

Thanks everyone for watching, this video seems to be taking off. For those who are unaware of how incredible this piece of driving is, this is Michael's first flying lap of the session, he only did one installation lap and a slow sighting lap beforehand. He had never driven the F2004 at Albert Park prior to this, so had to know how the car would handle. He also hadn't driven the track for a year and there are always small changes year on year.
He basically went out with no practice on a green track and beat a lap record that was set on lap 32 of the race on a rubbered in track and with hours of practice and setup work.
This is one of those rare moments in F1 that we won't see the likes of again.

One interesting fact was, the then Michelin chief Pierre Dupasquier
once said to a news outlet, after this lap, he closed his textbook at track and went for a beer. Because he knew, that this season was also over. I never forget this. Basically this lap destroyed everyone those days... Now 20 yars older, I recgnize how bad this was for the sport because it was boring thus then as a Ferrari fan I found it funny.

The 2004 Ferrari was so good, even Ferrari couldn't believe it. They had to take the car apart and check everything because they couldn't believe, it was several seconds faster than the 2003 car. Smaller and 200kg lighter than today. I love the old cars from 1995-2004.

Meanwhile, Michael was sitting in the car with the biggest shit-eating grin on his face because he knew the car was legit. The 2004 Ferrari was a cheat code on 4 wheels 🤣

For me, his most impressive drive was in Spain, I think, when 1/3 of the way into the race his gearbox got stuck in 5th (of 6). He instantly changed his lines to maintain corner speed and completed two pit stops with the transmission stuck in 5th and finished 2nd overall. He needed no one to tell him what to do, he responded INSTANTLY...

No, its qualifying, so its not breaking the lap record. Its just going faster than the lap record. Lap records can only happen in races, not in qualifying.
