Number #3, you mean abalone. In California there are all sorts of restrictions on harvesting abalone. First there is NO commercial harvesting since 1997. Also, all sport harvesting has been banned until 2026. When allowed, harvesting can ONLY be for personal consumption and use no sales, ONLY in areas North of San Francisco Bay but NOT on certain maritime reserved, NO scuba diving allowed only free diving, you must obtain licenses and tags for ID must be affixed to harvested shells, ONLY during certain months of the year and they must be of a certain size. Empty shells and shell pieces may be collected from beaches exclusive of certain marine reserves. Yes, they ARE considered a typical of sea snail and there are certain species that are completely off limits as they are being crowded out by invasive species. Whew! Hardly seems worth it, does it?

Yes, I meant abalone, but I also wanted to talk about mother of pearl lol. Mullosk is what I was trying to think of instead of snail. Mother of pearl comes from oyster, abalone and one other but I forget again lol.

@@della111 I do know that the largest beads came from giant clams, which are, of course, an endangered species and banned from harvest or trade. I know abalone is being farm-raised in South Africa, don't know if in the US.

@kristinedoty7876 it's a beautiful shell but not something I would hunt for personally. Food if nessacary but for ornamental reasons, not worth it.
