  • Nassau in the Bahamas is on of the busiest cruise ports in the world. It is often debated wether cruise passengers should skip or see Nassau and it the past it has had the reputation of being an aggressive interaction for cruisers. In today’s episode I disembark the Carnival Vista to see how many billion of dollars of cruise ships are in port today. I do a deep dive into the new Nassau cruise port area and I gauge the hassle factor.

*QUESTION* - _Is Nassau a see or skip port for you?_

We always like to get off the ship to experience the port. But our besties sometimes enjoy staying onboard. Perhaps someday I'll do that, but for now, I want to ADVENTURE at port!
We've only been to Nassau twice, once was a girls trip where we walked to the Queen's Staircase and up to Fort Fincastle (this was a great affordable option); also have done an all-inclusive resort at Breezes with our family. Looking at heading over to Blue Lagoon with a cruiseline excursion at our next stop.

1st trip we stayed in the tourist area within 3 blocks of the cruise port. 2nd trip we walked to Junkanoo Beach where we were hassled to buy trinkets the whole time and spent a small mint at Senior Frogs. 3rd trip we stayed on the boat and enjoyed the crowd-free environment.
With the new warnings we don't plan to get off there on any future cruises.

The first tug was an assist tug, like you said mainly used to assist ships in and out of port. That particular tug was a “Tractor Tug” it has as much power side ways as it does forward or backwards. The second tug was a tow boat, mainly used to tow barges either astern or alongside. Not nearly as maneuverable.

We've been to Nassau twice since their main shopping district (Bay Street) became a ghost town. Our first time back, we witnessed a group of religious zealots harass a family (with children) because there were two adult women in the group. Some very homophobic ranting was involved. We told a local cop about it; he laughed. The second time, we visited "Diamonds International" near Hard Rock. We bought a loose diamond, and they told us to carry it in a pocket, while they gave us a "dummy" bag to carry as a decoy for theft. One of their security guards escorted us back to our ship. If our next cruise includes a trip to Nassau, we're staying onboard. Years ago, you could walk to Paradise Island from the port. Now, you're risking your life.

@@Gottaknow - I wish you'd had the pleasure of seeing it "before", on Bay Street; right on the ocean. Sidewalk cafés with local food, discount outlet stores for crystal, locally-made crafts, jewelry, even a Burger King. It was absolutely beautiful to walk all the way from the (current) port to the double "high arch" bridges to Paradise Island. It was postcard beautiful. That's a high-crime area now with posted advisories on-site. And the current tourist areas are just for shopping; the dining is questionable. Although, there was still a "Hard Rock" there during out last (and final) visit in 2019. But who wants American food when traveling to The Bahamas? Also, I'm glad you weren't harrassed. Since you didn't have kids with you, you weren't perceived as a "family." Good for you. I'm glad you had a good time.

After a few trips my wife would rather stay on the ship rather than explore Nassau. Most of the shops and the hassle of getting approached started wearing on us. Plus, some areas of the ship are more open during the time docked at Nassau since so many people get off the ship. Of various islands we've been on I think Nassau would rate as the most "let's not go" destination. At least for us.

We took a catamaran that picked us up at the dock for our excursion at Sun Cay, so we didn't see the new port. When we returned from the excursion that's where they dropped us off. I've been on Carnival Elation, Carnival Liberty and Carnival Vista. All very nice FUN Ships. Next time I go to Nassau, I might opt to do the port area versus Atlantis or downtown Nassau. Cool if they have a roundabout shortcut to the straw market. Yep, they can be aggressive in the BAHAMAS everywhere you go. Just keep walking unless you want to buy something. I have been to Nassau a bunch of times so I've been there and done that, same with Coco Cay. Went there before it was turned into Perfect Day at Coca Cay.

I haven't been to Nassau since 1995. I was terrified then & with my husband. This looks really nice. I wonder how many steps you got in with that walk?! If I had to stop there I'd surely get off & walk to the end & feel very safe. Thanks for the facts & video - you always give good advice. Hugs (((())))

I like the end with cost but how much do they make? Assuming 7 ships like the day you were at port and it’s 23 pp for fees as of Jan 1 2024. Assume 21,800 people that would be $501,400 before anyone pays for anything on land

I was on this cruise with you. We only got off the boat for about 30 minutes and walked around the new port. No issues, no hassles. We get our picture when we get off the ship. We don't buy all the pictures. I heard that the Yacth that you were showing was Stephen Spilebergs. Not sure if that is right but that thing looked brand spanking new. Well dang, you mentioned that later in the video.

Tony, I too did a walk around Nassau's new cruise port area back on my December 2023 cruise on MSC Seashore. Super nice and clearly meant to fix the hassling by locals. Lots of security too! All that improvement was paid for by borrowing from CCP owned banks. In fact, a lot of the new resorts in Nassau are owned or built using CCP bank money. I don't blame the Bahamian Government for accepting the loans and they put it to good use. However, I foresee the Bahamians losing control of these places if they ever default on these loans. I love Nassau and enjoy venturing along the waterfront areas. I have 1 rule. Never walk more than 3 streets away from the waterfront in Nassau.

Thank you. Very much appreciated. We have been to Nassau years ago a few times and we always got harassed by the people coming off the boat. They would actually make fun of us after we told them "No thank you." But the new port seems more inviting. We are sailing in on Liberty of the Seas in April, and to be honest we were thinking of staying on the boat before your video. But after your video it makes me want to check out the new cruise port. Thanks!

We went to Nassau about a decade ago. The new port area looks nice.
That said, I wouldn't go back. Too many people annoyingly trying to hawk chintzy crap. They were also pushy and unpleasant. Way too touristy, crowded, and just an overall dump. But the wife got suckered into getting our oldest daughter's hair braided.
However, I did like going to the "Zoo." Nothing like seeing a Black Panther behind a barrier that was not anymore secure than a chain link fence.

We visited the Straw Market. I was overwhelmed. I wanted to check out the local carvers, but the aggressive guy next to the stall just made me want to leave. Everything was $25 and whereas I was interested in somethings, I just couldn't bring myself to haggle prices. 😢

Was there last October on RC. Took a round trip harbor cruise for $7.00 and walked around Atlantis then came back over near senior frog. Walked to the Queen's Stairs and stopped up to the fort. There was a lot of walking but it was interesting. Saw the US embassy being built and a 40 year statesman's funeral, unfortunately. However, all thier police and officials were in formal uniforms, which was honorably picturesque.
Had people trying to sell things a long the main drag which is normal but all you do is keep walking. The experience was amazingly nice and the weather was not to hot it was very comfortable. The stores inside the gated area seamed to be very price fixed since its controlled by the cruie companies but thats expected.

They were going to braid my hair for $300. I talked them down to $60. I decided not to do it cuz someone told me they braid really tight but you can def bargain. I got a pair of $15 "Ray-Bans" that they originally wanted $30 for.

Are you the Tony that Don talks about on the Don’s Family Vacation channel? I found this video very interesting. My best Caribbean cruise experience was on a Carnival ship in 1987, with two great friends. That was my first cruise, and no other one has lived up to that - i think because things were much smaller, more authentic, and safer. I’ve been on a number of Holland America cruises since, but have lost the desire - for cruising and many other things, because i am much older and averse to crowds.

Hi Tony! My husband and , along with then 5 year old daughter, cruised on one of the 2 balcony suites on the Carnival Elation in 1998 from Los Angeles. We booked what would be considered their top suite. Lots of good memories!

We avoid itineraries with Nassau. Let's see if this video changes my mind..... I could watch the sea critters show all day. That was pretty cool. Thank you for showing us that! Looks like it has drastically improved... Maybe we do t have to avoid it! Thank you, Tony. I'm glad I linked to this video from today's. It seems much nicer.

I love Nassau. Great daiquiris at Sharky's (I believe it's named). I walked to the free public beach several years ago. Loved it. I have video of that on my channel.
