You can also tell the story like in Dark Souls, where you play through the whole game knowing nothing of the story, for then afterwards watching 10 lore videos and still knowing nothing of the story.
Or you carefully read all of the item descriptions and make your own interpretation of the story and lore.
It's the thing with dark souls. There is no narrative that's present during the all game. The narrative is replaced with a deep atmosphere that's engaging (hopfully) enough for a story not to be needed.
The story is basicaly this: "You suck at this game" (every one of us)
Haha lol
the game still has minor cut scenes
Valve was so good telling stories in their videogames.. Not only Portal, and Half life but Left4dead and Team Fortress 2 have their own particular way to comunicate the story to the player, they mostly use the enviroment to tell it. Thanks for the video!
Remember when Valve made games.... good times.
You mean Half Life? Oh man,it was two decades ago.
@@F0st1n4t0r aaaand portal
@@Seedonator and Team Fortress 2
And left 4 dead
@@F0st1n4t0r this comment didn't age well. :D
Could you make an in depth video on game saving? Not only how to do it, but what is actually happening in the files when you save content?
Yes please do this I don't know how And there are not other good videos.
I've tried to find a good one for almost a year now, and have been unable. Either the video is poorly executed and/or edited, or the tutorial teacher expects you to already know half of what they are suppose to be teaching you. Brackeys always tends to be more clear, and his editing is very well done.
yeah same here.
When it was first time i see you, i was like "ohh that guy again.. cmon" but i broke my prejudices and started to watch your videos. Now i am a big fan of you and im very proud of you because you are doing your job very good effective and fluently. Thats what i need. Thats what world need 😊
Great topics you choose as always Mr Brackeys!!! Please keep them coming!!
Hi Asbjorn, excellent video. It also sort of brings together many of the videos you have been teaching. Can you please do part 2 of this?
I think another awesome way of storytelling is in "What remains of Edith Finch" :)
Nice video and content by the way
I would highly recommend you play transistor, it has an amazing art style, soundtrack, and a very good story which can be interpreted in different ways
Remember when John Carmack of Doom said that stories in games is a lot like plot in porn?
vid was super cool , and i completely agree, keep making these videos between tutorials if you are having fun , and i can tell that you are . btw can you make a tut on picking up objects? thank you
Dude... You are so good and I'm soaking your words in like a sponge... You deserve every little sub
I hope I can manage to make the game I have in mind. Just started learning unity and blender this month and it's been really fun so far.
Your content has been part of what has made things so enjoyable. Thanks man!
Love the new format!
If you stop making vids i 'll die!! Your videos are so GOOD and helpful!
Pretty on point video, Brackeys.
Personally, as a whole, I don't think story-telling in games has developed much and I would say there is much room for improvement. I do enjoy story-driven games, but not many of them are really good put together stories and are mostly forgotton. But, the potential for strong story-telling and the intereactivtiy of games is very delicious indeed!
Understanding story structure is an artform and gaming, I would say, is a collection of artforms in one package. It's a good thing.
Awesome video. Keep up Brackeysss.
I would love more videos like this, not necessarily directly related to Unity.
This is quality content I want
I need Portal 3. ...oh, right, it's Valve we're talking about here. God damn it.
Damn
We would get Portal: Glados
valve doesn't know how to count to three.
Make a game series please I enjoy your game series and tutorials
Make a new video on Multiplayer! It's so confusing, and I watched your old ones but if you could do more explaining on how it all works and syncing variables that would help.
Brackeys has more subscribers than Unity now!
hahaha
Haikyuuu????

Currently one of the best programs out there to help tell your story is a program called "articy:draft 3", which you can get from steam or from the Nevigo website.
I don’t understand why cutscenes or cinematics get shit on so much, I love those things as much as I love the more interactive narrative of Thomas was Alone or Half Life 2. To have a moment to sit back and breathe and enjoy an engaging produced chunk of content with characters I’m already engaged in feels like a reward to me. How impactful would that Sniper Wolf scene be if I could just control snake and fuck around in the snow field? Or the Licker introduction in RE2?
It's the over use of cut scenes is the problem, think of the D-day level in old world war 2, compared to the D-day level on the recent world war 2 game(i don't rember the full names), in the new one, there is little gameplay, no theart to dye, in the old one, you go from landing craft to the bunkers, slowying moving to cover, like real life, your inmersed in it, that just an opnion, but reasable(i am a bad speller)
Or just image if you wouldn't be able to pay respect at the funeral. :3
Tell tale has it mastered for game play and story combined
Congrats ..and thx for the discount!
Heu Brackeys ! Love your videos ! will you make a 2vs fighters course one day ? 😁
Make more vids like this btw ur Chanel is awesome
so quick question, would it be easier on load times and game quality to have a large castle in the game but be a whole model of it's own or a number of seperate models stitched together?(ofcourse exluding furniture, decorations and the like.)
Hey, can you make a video on top ways to optimise your games?
Can I ask you and advice?
Imagine to have a plane mesh and a heightmap that controls its shape. In game, when you click with the mouse, you edit the area of the heightmap corresponding to the hit vertex. But how to track it in the texture? Do you know how :D ?
Hey Brackeys, Love your videos! Can you make a video talking about unity 2D for intermediate users? I've done quite a bit of 3D, but struggling to adapt to 2D and it's fancy features that came out in the last versions. You have a series on this, but it's quite outdated (2-3 years old). Cheers!
Sir, please make a video on how to use Octane Rendering in unity.
Another amazing one is The principle of talos
Nice Video! Can you please make a Ball Wars Tutorial Series?
I often fall into the gamaking trap where I make the hole whole thing a cut scene
I love u Brackeys
amazing video.....
Could you please tell us
which software is best for making the story of game ?
This video reminds me I haven't played Stanley Parable since 27/11/2015, 2 years down, 3 more to go for the 5 year achievement.
OMG, that's insane I just checked mine and it's 10/09/2015, it feels like I played it last year!
y'all can just change your computers clock.
Nebulaoblivion doesn't work like that.
almost there lol
Is the deed done?
Amazing
I was watching this when my mom called on me to make her a cup of coffee right at 0:17 now that is an unskippable cutscene
It's kind of funny how after a Unity Pro sponsored video, my first recommendation on the right is your video saying that Unity Pro is not a really good investment for most people :D
Unity Plus (the one you can get a discount for) and Unity Pro are not the same. Plus is 35$/month ( 29.75 with the discount I think) while Pro is 125$ a month.
He actually makes this point in the video you pointed out.
That said: most people are still fine with personal.
Hey brackeys could you make a recoil tutorial video just with c# and no animations?
Aerop same
Stop telling him what to do. That's a very specific and simple thing that's not worthy of a video.
Leo Fisher I only asked once and I need to know somehow don't be so rude
Aerop just try and learn to figure things out yourself. Don't use you tubers as a crutch
Leo Fisher it wouldn't be efficient and I currently don't have the time + this is the last aspect of my game I need to add for the character sooooo sorry but no also try not to let people like me bug you too much waste of time dude
Add video about and how use Asset Bundles !
For me, the best example i've played has to be SOMA.
I consider SOMA to be an often overlooked game that hinges narrative on gameplay set pieces. While the gameplay is "flat" the way it kickstarts the climax and closing acts, is rarely unmatched by other games.
signed in just to thank you
I could talk hours and hours about Portal. Done soo much research about it and it's background / unreleased content / development / story..
you can tell a story by cutscenes ( which should be skippable btw.... i dont want to see a cutscene like 500 million times, it gets quite boring ), but story can be told through game objects and most importantly through environment, which is probably the best way of telling a story, because it feels much better if you find that piece of story like that in my opinion and it adds much more into the atmosphere.
How do you add a narrator to a game? I don't know what voice changer/text to speech thing to use.
You should start a series on how to make a Tetris attack/Pokemon Puzzle League clone!
Good video.
Haha, like the head nod at 3:45
And when are you going to create your game? Do a serie on it? Where have you ever created a game?
Did you get the idea of doing this video from Mark Brown? Because its very similar.
I appreciate this video so much it has really helped me out I'm currently writing my own game and this gave me a ton of ideas in what direction to take it it the most realistic way
How to upload 3d model on your website ?
Do how to pick up items on the ground that’s where I’m stuck
omg me too!
Can u make a tutorial about vehicles scrypting in Unity? ;p
Can you please do a video on a character shop like cross road
But how to do it in Unity? I mean, how, in Unity, I can stop the gameplay to insert cutscenes or whatever I want to do storytelling?
Halflife and portal my favorite games!
Dear Brackeys first of All U God a good flavour exspacilly that You mentioned hl2 and Portal. But i Really Was thinking, if You Know half life 2, You Are probably Common with hl1 (or maybe the more good Looking fanmade Remake Black Mesa) ? Because in my opinnion i was a bit Confused u didnt mentioned that. Because IT has Even a much better Story than All the other. So i am intrested, if You just Dont Know This Game so well or didnt think the same way greats
Most games : Cutscene
Valve game : We don't do that here.
I thought you will show how to make cutscenes! Please make video about it :)
He show you that you don´t need to do cutscenes for tell a story :D
Hi I have a BIIIIIG problem I making a game and I do jumping in the game but there is a problem I must do jumping without using physic
can you help me ?
tanks
Could you make a simple 2d cutscene at the end of the game?
Please please please make a ludo game tutorial video with online multiplayer mode
If some gamers wanna have stories into their games.......then, it's fine!
If some gamers wanna play video games without stories......and, that's also fine.
It all comes down to personal preference, though. :-P
nice
Brackeys plz original zigzag tutorial mainly platform spawning like original one
prey 2017, protagonist doesn't talk.
and i think its the closest game for a halflife series kind a game available. at least in last few years. anyone who likes halflife, definitely should play it. really good game..
C-dark It is said to be closer to System Shock than it is to half life.
Yep, it reminded me of Half-Life than it did System Shock - in fact, I only thought about Half-Life (the first one, to be precise).
Can you tell me how to add storyline in a game
Guard: Pick up the can
Me: No
Guard: So you have chosen......death
Can someone suggest me how to start learning unity scripting? whitout just taking scripts maked by other guys, just where can I learn how to script well?
You need to learn C#. There are plenty of tutorials here on youtube. You can also take online courses.
Hey there, does anyone know the name of the secound game? (in which you have to make choises ...) thanks alot, and nice video! :D
(like he says) stanley parable
ok, thanks.. i didnt quite understand him..
Wbr Jr, try this game. It's sure gonna give you a fun time.
Heck, even make a reaction video. Perhaps even that will get popular.
First of all,why the fuck would you want to skip cutscenes on a linear story driven game (max payne 3). Its a game where story is like the main factor because all you do in gameplay is just shoot and shoot. I am sick of everyone using that game as example and shaming it for not allowing people to skip main part of the game. If you don't care about the story then you are playing the game for wrong reasons. Cutscenes are really important to tell a well crafted story. Every story doesn't work in a dynamic fashion. But i am not saying i don't like story telling in a dynamic fashion. But for every game it just won't work. Cutscenes are problem when there isn't enough gameplay, but why would you complain about overuse of cutscenes on a story driven game. Its like literally the thing its supposed to deliver.
he moaned about this loud 0:16
Can you make android rpg games tutorial
Love me a game with a good story
#notificatonsquade
but how to do a cutscene in Unity?
Depends on how you want to do it, if you want to do it Half Life/Classic halo style, just setup the scene like you would in an animation software scene, then add trigger colliders in the key spots where the player would go within the level to trigger the animation sequence.
If you want to do it proper cutscene, you just need one trigger collider and then animate everything else like you would in a traditional animation scene, then return control to the player once the new level has loaded and the player avatar is in the starting position of said level
That's the basics... More specific stuff would be character and camera animation, but those are things, the general principles of which you would learn in an animation course and importing into unity wouldn't take much time. With the new Unity functionality animating the camera is far more intuitive, so you could look into the new camera system that was introduced in Unity 2017.1
The other possibility is pre-rendering cutscenes in an external software then playing it as a video file in between levels. It's up to you to decide which way you want to go.
5:54 aww c'mon glados don't make me feel bad about myself
How can Valve be so amazing at this?
Everyone: Because they invented it. And then they perfected it, do then no living company would best them in the ring of honor
- Another Valve character (you know the one)
*Unescapable cutscene*

I am a simple man, I see half life in the thumbnail, I like
Hey! The Stanly Parable!
The Half Life series started storytelling from a whole new way
how to make a game that take place in one area, but with story.
I can't figured out how to do it... do i just need to... if chapter 1 then show dialog 1 elseif chapter 2 show dialog 2... until the last chapter?
Can you brackeys make a tutorial about how to model in maya pls
I feel like I have seen this before. re-upload?
halflife 3 confirmed!
The first portal wasn't made by valve. It was community mod for half life 2.
The best Games come along with their own engine. Half Life, Unreal etc. Well, Unreal's storytelling though xD
how to make 2d terrain editor in unity
I hadn’t played portal yet but now I know the end :/
Came out 11 years ago. I don't suspect you were ever going to play this if you haven't by now. Need to stop only leaving comments and start playing some more games ;).
I want a narrator like twitch readers that read my word and i can use it in my game do u know one??
