The light saber hilt for Vader is in the correct position for how they originally intended it. LEGO made the two different ends to the hilts with the thought in mind that one side could be Jedi & one side could be Sith. It just depended on the character but that definitely was the original intent & why they gave the hilts two different ends. The fans seems to think that they all have to be one way but it’s not what the original designers intended. I know for sure having been a designer that worked on both brands. They wanted the consumer to be able to choose which end looked closer to the original character for themselves. That’s why to this day they still have the two options. Great video Ryan. 👍

The first thing I noticed was the lightsaber blades were rounded off and not flat like the ones we have today. I honestly like how they look in the promotional set
They look like modified antenna pieces. Probably used as a substitute because the new mold wasn’t ready or something

You know that the lightsaberblade is only a sawed of antenna (3957).
Poorly Lego hasn’t made an extra mold for this.

I saw that set on store's display as a kid. And considering how poorly those stores treated promotional material, especially toys, I imagine several of those being thrown out
My guess is the lightsaber blades are rounded because they didn’t have a mould ready for a 4L bar, so they just cut the bases off some antenna pieces
My thought exactly, in the space sets from the 90s you could see clear antennae almost represent light sabers. I have a few in transparent colors, very neat regardless. And when I was little (2004) actual lightsaber blades were a rare item with the star wars sets not being sold as widely in-stores as 2006+ so while I got some chrome hilts time to time I didn't get any proper blades until 2007/2008 so used the transparent green & red antenna pieces instead. They look good but are pretty long compared to the minifigs

I have one of these, exactly the same. Received it as a promo item when I worked for the Los Angeles Times entertainment section back in the 90s. Glad I hung on to it all these years.
That would be a great piece to see in a lego museum, and honestly the rounded piece for the blade makes more sense than the flat one

You should carefully remove the set and replace the battery. might need a soldering tool but it would be super cool to hear it
If not to get it working, then to prevent the old battery from corroding and destroying the cardboard.

I wonder if the lightsabers are made not using the parts we see in production, but with sawn off rods from the "Antenna 4h Round Top" piece? That part did come in lightsaber colors around that time, and Lego has modified parts for promotional material in the past. They even sawed the OG UCS X-Wing in half and glued it to a mirror.
The reverse sword of the figure only increases the value because it is strange and not like the other boxes!!

Also, typical LEGO that they do not know how to put the lightsaber hilt (that they CREATED ) on right lol. Just goes to show that everyone makes mistakes, I am never going to change my mind about the right way to have it, it is to have it with the thicker part up connected to the blade
Hey, I remember rounded lightsabers from some sets. My friends had a couple of them around 2001-2003 (when I was in primary school, I believe), and they looked exactly like the ones on this set.

The reason he’s in his Endor outfit is because this was the only return of the Jedi Luke at the time the Jedi robe one didn’t come out until 2000 in Desert skiff, 2002 in Final Duel and Jabbas Palace in 2003. I did not know this promo set existed so that’s kind of awesome to find something I’ve never seen before

You can replace that battery for the sounds if you open the whole thing up. You'd have to be careful but it looks like it's all just folded together.

I had spongebobs house, Bilbos Hobbit Home and The Queen Anne’s revenge and that one spider man set on the bridge with all those different spider men. And the falcon all the pieces hidden away. Absolutely devastating knowing it will be a long time till I see those sets again.

They may have made the edges of the blades round so it’s easier to glue the saber piece into the hilt

Apparently intentional. According to the original designers, the intention was that one side would be used for Jedi lightsabers, the other would be used for Sith lightsabers and fans could use whichever end they preferred.

Do like the rounded end on the lightsaber blades. Assuming one end would be rounded and one end flat because not sure rounded end would have enough clutch power to stay in the lightsaber hilt’s hole.
