Excellent presentation! Daughter is dealing with the warm hard start, I'm trying to diagnose from 250 miles away. Recently worked on by professional mechanic. She got gas and would not start. A push on the gas while cranking would then it will start. I'll follow up this comment when she gets it fixed. Thanks for taking the time to post this, again, very well done Sir!
It was an exellent video. Thank you so much for really clear explanation (leakaged) which helped me to fix my Prius 2010 with P0171 error code. Found the air filter clamp right next to MAF sensor loose.
I swear by the Chevy Equinox. I purchase a new one in 2005 and it ran like a champ. Turned it over to my Granddaughter in 2014 and it still going strong. What did I replace it with. A new 2014 Chevy Equinox. One of the best and most reliable vehicle I have ever owned.
I love hearing success stories. I have seen a few in the shop but usually due to lack of proper maintenance. The last one I had in was because the coolant ate right through the head gaskets because it had not been serviced in over ten years. Costly mistake.
I have ,05 and just replaced cat and bought new sensor guys at Auto parts says it was clogged and my check engine light is still on and still saying same thing, low efficiency threshold, should I buy this part to see if my engine light goes off?
2012 Nissan Maxima with code P0171. Your tip on higher trim values at idle and lower trim values when reved. Was a vacuum leak. 3/8” vacuum hose blown out on the back side. I could hear it sucking. Looks like the PCV hose. Thanks for the tip. $3 Fix.
Very good video. . . It is yet another example of one component going bad, but doesn't directly trip a direct code. Annoying. . But it is how it is. . . I had a mass airflow sensor go bad once while on a long trip. Luckily, it tripped the code that speficically went right to it. It was a 3 minute repair, start to finish.
I had p0171 on my Colorado. It was not running for crap. Bought 03 sensors nothing. So I bought a fuel pressure kit harbor freight. Found my pressure at about 18 lbs. Replaced fuel pump now pressure is over 50. Runs like a new truck.
Terrific explanation, super-useful video. Gotta be honest: kinda nice to see even a pro have to “tussle” a bit with these MAF sensor installs. (Would be the first to admit that instead of two Os, my “shoot” might’ve had an I if nobody was watching. 😉)
I have seen that as well. The PCV vent side becomes disconnected when people remove the intake air box and don't get the hose on the underside properly connected. Don't know what we would do without these gravy repairs they seem to engineer into these vehicles.
Thank you for the video. At about 5:30 as your hand iis moving towards the ignition pack there is a hose that attaches to the top of the engine. What is that part it connects to? The clip that holds the hose in place is missing on my 2005 equinox and I'm connerned it is causing a vacuum leak.
Those suckers are a pain. Haha. I didn't line my o-ring. Just getting that thing out was ridiculous. Glad I didn't drive my little screwdriver through my hand in the process. Haha
Could this code be caused by bad gas? We were having no issues with a Dodge Ram 1500. Filled the tank with gas, the vehicle shut itself off whilst filling, hesitantly started, then sputtered and stalled after driving about a quarter mile. The vehicle needed towed. After adding Heet to the tank and using cans of starting fluid, the vehicle starts, but won't stay running. The code is P0171. There were no issues prior to this.
Thanks for the video. Have this same code on my wife's 2014 Escape. Question...On our Escape, P0171 is lean on Bank 1. If it were the Mass Air Flow Sensor causing the computer mis-calculate the amount of fuel to add, wouldn't that affect both banks the same? I'm trying to narrow down my issue is why I'm asking this. Not sure if I'm missing something.
Hello friend... I have a 2002 chevy s10 2.2l pickup.. I checked for leaks with smoke and no leaks... New fuel pump, new filter, new 02 sensor, new spark plug cable and plugs, new map sensor. And still get the p0171 code right back.. Any ideas why?? Please help me
My scanner only does Freeze Frame data. It found the following for a P0171... STFT Bank 1 is 14.8% LTFT Bank 1 is 29.6 MAF is 0.39 lb/min (2.948g/s) 809 rpm throttle position 26.2 Vacuum leak? I have searched for a vacuum leak and can't seem to locate one on the 2010 Chevy hhr 2.2L. Wish I had access to live data on the Innova scanner.
I'm getting that code, so the computer thinks it's running lean, but it's running so rich you can practically see charcoal dust spraying out of the exhaust. Between the MAF and the O2, if they are sending conflicting data to the computer, which sensor gets the final say? It's a 2002 ranger with a 2.3. It runs smooth for the first couple minutes, then goes to pure crap.
I changed my MAF sensor , intake manifold gasket upper and lower , pcv valve and grommet . The service engine light went out for a while then came back on then after 2 days the light came back on again . Anything else I’m missing ?
The buffer on my Modis Ultra only goes to 2000... guess I should check if an update is available via shopstream. With my luck... I'm sure it's only available with an actual "paid" update. =(
Just about cheaper to buy a new scanner nowadays then to update. If you update the tool youll get to have cheap cables that break the first time you touch them. Super cool. I would keep the lower buffer.
Hello and thank you for your informative videos. I am having similar problems with my 2010 equinox 2.4L. My problem though is not a hard start at all. It starts and runs fine unless I am sat for a bit in a drive thru or stop light. So basically on idle in drive. When this happens long enough the check light comes on and the code is the p0171. I have changed the MAS airflow sensor, the broken exhaust manifold, and the upstream O2 sensor. Yesterday I had a throttle position sensor code so I replaced the throttle body. I also got with that but not changed yet the downstream O2 sensor. Plan to do that job tomorrow or next couple days. Any help would be amazing as this 06 equinox is not like my 10. Thank you in advance.
a small amount of dielectric grease just to coat that "o" ring makes it much easier to install....without it I think the sensor could actually break they go in so hard
yea, much easier to service.....hey i'v been watching your channel for a little while and you have some good vids....and a funny sense of humor....such as the ptsd with the Subaru... ha ha
Haha. I figured a lot of Subaru guys would be upset about that vid but so far seems like they have a pretty good sense of humor as well. Glad your following the channel and appreciate the feedback as well. Been doing this for 27+ years but learning new stuff almost daily. RUclips has been a blessing for me and many others. Take care.
Buick 2000 3.8....my warning light problem began about 2 months ago. First it said gas cap loose, I cleaned it and that was solved...Then it became slightly difficult to start, so I would slightly tap the gas pedal and it would start right up. After a couple days it would start up normally again on the first turn of the key like it always has and still does now........a couple weeks ago the yellow check engine light came on and the code came up PO171. Then it when out by it self a couple days later, then came on again, and went out again...During all of this I have watched my mileage very closely, and my instant mileage for highway driving is 29 mpg, which I the same has it has always been, and the average overall mileage is 22, like it always has been......do you have any idea what the problem would most likely be? Also during this whole time the car has been idling and running very good......Thanks for any suggestions...............
thanks man my 06 pontiac Torrent 3.4L v6 i just had my engine rebuilt cause of a blown head gasket and my mechanic says that the engine light is on he says that it running lean do you think that it is the Mass flow sensor doing this, i was driving around most of today but noticed that i am burning more fuel, i replaced the rubber elbow that go on to the pvc valve and also replaced with a new Gas Cap but the engine light is still on in the Dash, do you think that it might be the Mass Flow causing that light to be on, the car starts fine.
given mileage and age of vehicle you replaced the air sensor. Veh is 16 years old and 196K miles.. Are you recommending changing the sensor in this video when those two factors become elements?
My veh is 16 years old with 196k miles. I tried cleaning and treating air filter, inspecting and clamping lines that needed it, removing and cleaning MOF-blowing it out brushing it off, yet almost daily my ce light comes on with same reponse (too lean) at this point I'm thinking of replacing sensor because I don't know what else to try
Tim, I have 2000 Grand Prix with a 3800 engine I get a check engine light that will come on with a PO 171 code. It will stay on for a day or 2 and go off by it self and come back on a day or 2 later. I just have a cheap scan tool and only has freeze frame data. The last time it came on I wrote it down. R.P.M.1115, ST.F.T.20.31, Lt F.T 16.40. Map 11.22 Maf 0.19 Mp 13. What do you think?.
OH boy, sounds similar to this one. Have you tried cleaning the MAF? CK close for vacuum leaks in all the places I talked about here. You could try to calculate the MAF values. What altitude are you at?
You can use one of those MAF calculators online and calculate based on the readings you have. If you decide to replace the MAF I would recommend using the Delphi unit like this. Not reman or spectra junk
All in how they calculate how much air is entering the engine. I think a MAF is better at doing that but prone to failure so its give and take for advantage of either. That's just my opinion and they probably have other reasons based on the actual engine and fuel system design.
Hahaha, no key needed for the install but I neglected to put a dab of lube on the o-ring first. That's why I edited out the cussing and extended fighting with the stupid thing. On the second one I put a little lube on it and it popped right in.
If you are repairing a customer's car, don't clean it. You risk a come back if you are not thorough about it or age related failure later. Plus, you gotta charge labor to clean, which comes out a wash.
I really didn't think of it that way but youre right. For whatever reason, these particular part numbers are junk. I just want it fixed and down the road. They will be saving that much in gas over the next few months. Blessings!
You have to know what you're looking at to understand this video since we aren't shown the full screen as he's discussing the numbers. Not a great vid for new diy-ers. Also doesn't discuss just P0171 but only in relation to hard start when warm -- not very common with the P0171 code.
Great Video Tim but not being able to see the whole scan tool screen (line item monitor circuit and it's value at the same time) and because your tool was bouncing all over because you're trying to show us what your talking about. Maybe if you did what you normally do and leave the camera on the tripod. That might have made the video a lot better. Oh Yeah what a friggen Pain in the Ass that was getting the old sensor out. I probably would have tossed Big Bertha in the ring and have a few beers to settle my nerves.
OH man, I thought the screen was better than normal. Maybe it wasn't me bouncing around but maybe you had your puppy in your lap while you were trying to watch youtube.
"Checik here.check there" look at this look at there… in case here is the problem with MAF sensor" what kind BS is that? You must explain how you fond that.(maf problem). I don't think you know lot of things about it
He did explain it. He looked at the fuel trim variations and while doing so explained 3 different scenarios that would point you to 3 different culprits.
I like your no nonsense style of diagnoses and repair. Most car problems are common issues and don't require a scope to diagnose. Good job.

sounds like an infection. Never heard of a Chevy Equinox either
