Yo hektor , I almost fell for autozone telling me It was my intake , and valve cover had me ordering $300 worth of parts I had a scanner but didn't know much about fuel trims and how that works , I stumbled on this video and after a new purge the cruze is all set to go . The big part of this is I'mma single dad of three girls 10 , 12 , and 14 and that money I was able to save went a long way at the grocery store at a time I'm out of work due to covid , just wanted you to know your not just teaching people how to fix cars ur helping us keep money in our pockets when money is so tight rn thanks brother I really appreciate ya , and Tom cruze is still running smooth take care , God bless , and peace out
Man this is a fantastic video that helped me fix my son's Cruze who's in college. Every dollar saved counts. I learn so much from guys like yourself that educate the public but definitely don't have too. I really appreciate your help. Very kind indeed. Take care my friend. 👍
This video was exactly what my needed! I took my car to the dealership, pep-boys and 4 other mechanics and noo one was able to tell me what was wrong with it! I spent over $1500 taking it from shop to shop, I saw this vid, bought the part for $40 and solved the problem!! You are a god!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I literally took my vauxhall corsa 1.2 3door 2014 to a couple different mechanics regarding lean engine p00171 and none of them had a clue what it was. Thanks to this video I changed the Breather valve all on my own, took me 2 minutes. If it wasn’t for you Hector the mystery in my car wouldn’t have ever been solved!!
Have been popping a P0171 code for about a year now. Keep resetting it, which does me for awhile but then it pops up again. Finally decided to search for the issue. Came across NUMEROUS videos regarding this code, but yours is the ONLY one checking the purge valve....and lo and behold, upon checking this before heading to work this morning, my purge valve is sucking air. Have now ordered a replacement and hope to be back without codes soon. Thank you so much for your excellent explanation and descriptive video....I miss the old days of drag racing my easy to work on 72 Chevelle, none of this cheap plastic and emissions crap throughout the car....just a 350 4-bolt that you could sit on top of while working on it. 🙂
Fantastic explanation. I repair appliances for a living so I work on all my own stuff. This video totally explains diagnosing the P0171 well. My 2013 Cruze 1.8L was having this code. Was going to replace the O2 sensor. However after watching this was able to test, sure enough my purge valve wasn’t sealing. Thanks again for the help!!!
My purge valve is brand new so that's not the problem I've already checked that probably A 02 sensor going bad or something any ideas would be appreciated
Thanks for the video, Hector. This helped me a lot. I was convinced I had an issue with my IAV, and decided to check this instead since the symptoms were similar and it has been impossible to find a IAV outside of the dealership. Fortunately, I saw your video and now my wife can give me back my car.
I blew into my purge valve and air was flowing through with ease. Best diagnosis ever, even if your car has no problems always good to remove the breather valve and blow into it incase.
I had the P0171 code happen to me last year. It was an indication of a vacuum leak, which turned out to be a bad vacuum hose. All that needed to be done was change the vacuum hose and the problem was solved. I'm always happy when the repair is quick and simple.
Thank you, this was the problem. I have had this idle issue with a po171 code for my 2011 Chevy Cruze for almost two yrs. I did a lot of searching and fixed other issues related to it, but I could never find anything that related the issue this video showed. I'm sure other videos and info is out there, but I never came across it. My purge valve had just a slight suction when there shouldn't have been one. I got a new one and noticed the change right away. It fixed my problem.
Homie Hector, I’m so glad to have found you homie. You’re very knowledgeable compared to the wannabes bruh. Yeah you’re definitely going to make it big!
Good thing that it was the purge valve that caused that lean condition but in my car it turned out be an O2 sensor going bad. Thank you for the video and good troubleshooting.
This is great. I came to same conclusion on my car before I even got to this video, My deduction was made up on different experiences of others, however I can say that cleaning my purge valve did the trick for me. Therre are a lot of these valves used and you may or may not be lucky. My valve costed 130€ for 1.6 engine while 1.4 engine costed about 15€. Plus, 1.4 engine valve was widely available and my engine' valve was obtainable only by dealer. So I took it off, tested with battery (solenoid was clicking fine) and I cleaned it with brake cleaner. After three runs it was sealing perfect and I returned it to its position. You may want to test it and try to fix it before you buy new one, just my 2 cents.
Very informative video! Currently dealing with some issues with my 2014 chevy cruze 1.8 l4. Jerking a little when in idle along with the rpm dropping when i’m parked. I bought a new valve gasket and i’ll get it switched out if it’s needs to. But first i’m gonna need to find out what codes it sends out. Thank you!
Thank you so much I’m sitting here at work killing myself looking for this vacuum leak on a 2012 Cruze and this really helped me narrow it down to the valve cover you’re awesome thank you so much!
same problem of my car chevy cruze 2011 engine check P0171 but the dealer tech said its turbo replacement is it possible they did not do a smoke test they did not explained its a vaccum leak they said its a fuel trim and there diagnose is turbo replacement last month they change my cat converter and oil fan and its cost me 2 thousan dollars it seems i cannot trust them anymore and its a big help watching your vedio i learn a lot thanks
Thanks Hektor I just went to the auto parts store and changed the purge valve now no stalling at park and not needing to press the gas when I start the vehicle
My engine seems to have a very slight vacuum leak as if it only has a leak occasionally. After watching your video I noticed that most of the noise from my engine (which always seemed loud to me) was clicking from the purge valve. So I just ordered a new one. We'll see of that improves the symptoms.
Just came across your channel and like it quite a bit. But it should be a rule that every southern tech MUST spend at least 2 years in the north learning the trade-if for nothing else but to know what hat it's like for us.
thank you, Hector Homie, by watching your videos, on you tube. it help me a lot, I , Replace the purge valve on 2013 chevy cruze that was smoking a lot. Now my car is like a new one. code P0171 . now is clear. thank you and God bless. now i, HAVE A MECHANIC IN YOU TUBE.
Great video! Nothing wrong what so ever with it. The only comment I have is that when you said the O2 sensor readings were a dead give away that its a vacuum leak, some extra info on why that is would be great. Further teaching the masses on how to diagnose. Again, not necessary and great video regardless. :)
This is exactly what was wrong with my 2017 Buick Encore! For anyone in Canada, the purge valve is covered under a special extended warranty that outlasts the regular powertrain as GM apparently knows how faulty this is. If you bring it to your dealer and you’re still in that window, chances are it’ll be 100% covered under warranty. Wish I saw this video before though, and could’ve avoided the dealership all together!!
Thank you sooooo much for your videos. You have helped me so much with my 2013 Chevy Cruze. It's been giving me one problem after another. If not for you, I would have had to pay mechanics to fix it and realistically could not afford that right now. So again Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!!
Outstanding video! I just bought one of these scanners the other day and there really aren't many good familiarization videos out there on how to use it. The book is "meh" at best. At work, all we have is Snap-On. Im not real impressed by them... they dont seem to have the functionality that these Autel scanners have (or they are WAAAAYYY overpriced). So, thank you for the great explanation with the car AND the scanner. 👍👍
Thanks for the video Hector. I had same problem P0171, changed valve gasket and fuel injectors and had same problem smh. Next is to clean/change the MAF sensor.
wonderful explanation! I have a question regarding this exact vehicle. My Cruze has a p0172, I've changed everything that could possibly be causing the code. I've replaced the up stream o2, MAF, Spark plugs, and one clogged injector and the long-term fuel trim continues to operate at -35. Any suggestions on what it could be?
the pcv is more of an issue on the 1.4l, in general the 1.4 has more issues anyway. but that purge valve is common on both engines, i have the 1.8l sonic and i have a new purge valve in the glove box just in case.
Thanks man, it fixed rough idling on my 2014 chevy cruze, I followed your video step by step and it turned out the purge valve is bad. I appreciate it man
Outstanding! Awesome ! Great job. Keep it up and you will be the best mechanic out there. I am impressed. Good-luck. Good tutorial and checking ratios and measurements with scanner before after taking a decision to change parts
I had this problem, intermittent then steady. The system thought it wasn't getting enough air and leaned the fuel delivery. Faulty MAF sensor was the cause. Get the Bosch from Rockauto, $47. It's at least $113 locally. Power increased noticable but fuel economy also improved.
Great video, thank you! one question though - if testing the purge valve only takes a minute, wouldn't it make sense to start your investigation with it?

I should have had you analyze my 2015 Malibu 2.5L, 4-cylinder with the P0171 code. Engine sounds fine, check engine light on. Took it to the dealer, they ran their tests, couldn't find a fix after 5 hours, and didn't charge me but reset the light. Half a day later, the light comes on again, I decide to take it Tires Plus and let them have had it. A few hours later, they just confirmed what the dealership said, couldn't find a fix, and didn't charge me and reset the light. Half a day later, light comes on again. That's where I am now. Can't afford to just waste time on this. Engine still sounds fine.
@@HomieHektor Yeah, Tires Plus gave me their list of P0171 potential systems and one was "Fuel Quality", I put in some gas from a different company and some time later the light went off for a few hours, then back on. Added some fuel injector cleaner and more gas and the light stayed off. It's been quite a while now and the check engine light is still off.
The only thing he did not explain, (and I don't understand) is, how a vacuum leak would BLOW OUT Smoke rather than suck it in -??? We used to use throttle body cleaner, or something like it, and spray an area to see if engine Revs Up! (can be dangerous : )
Have a 2014 Chevy Cruze 1.4L have already replaced about 12 parts since October and it’s still not running right has a rough idle and a squeal/whistle have replaced the valve cover and codes still show lean even after being cleared they come back on after a day. Fingers crossed it’s this and not anything else $1200+ in repairs cost me $75 to do the valve cover and fixed the stalling issue
i would like to thank you for your vedio now i have an idea the dealer targetting the expensive parts but i not even see the parts they change just a pcs of papers
I think it was my valve cover gasket going bad and spitting oil all over my bits. Then my catalytic converter went bad because of it. Just get it fixed right or get rid of it, either way the car will fun fine for a while and if it doesn't have the code cleared or get it fixed cheap so it can run right. I had my mechanic put a spacer in the 02 sensor in the exhaust so my engine light went away and it ran worse for the environment but ran okay and didn't give me any more trouble.
Would a bad upstream oxygen sensor cause a cruz to stall? Im getting p0171. Ive already changed maf, hose from turbo to intake manifold, cleaned throttle body. Im getting low readings from upstream sensor. Doesn’t go over 0.200 just regulates below that. Car runs rough and throws black smoke. On cold start feels normal till it get to idle. Sometimes shuts off of i rev it
Right on Hektor!! I appreciate your videos. Your vid’s are so helpful!! Single dad and I work on all our vehicles myself to save that dollar. Keep ‘em coming!! Bless you and stay safe bro.
So I got one that runs lean with the purge valve plugged in. But unplugged goes to normal fuel trims. I smoke tested through the purge line towards the tank and no leaks with canister vent valve commanded closed. And with it commanded open pours smoke from canister.
Had PO171 code. Cleaned the mass airflow sensor and used Techtron high mileage fuel cleaner. Reset check engine. Check engine light has been off 250 miles. My opinion is the the Techtron cleaner is the fix.
I have a p0171 code but on a 2.4L malbu. I replaced the purge valve solenoid and the O2 sensor as well as the spark plugs. Then, today I noticed a crack in the exhaust manifold. Maybe a dumb question, but do you think that could cause the P0171 and the P0300 codes? Trying to figure this out without dropping a grand in shop costs.
@@HomieHektor well it was not the breach valve. It was actually the PVC valve. Which in an 09 Aveo5 is built into the valve cover. I had to replace the whole valve cover.
@@derrickmcdaniel6105 Nice, fairly easy fix. I ruled out the purge valve on mine. I need to check the check valve if it’s missing to determine if I need to replace both manifold and valve cover/PCV or just PCV.
2012 Chevy Cruze 1.8l. Purge valve is functioning correctly, yet still throwing same code p0171. Is there any definitive way to know if it's the valve cover? I don't have a fancy scan tool yet but it sure would be nice to know for sure before I replace the valve cover. There are no other obvious vacuum leaks. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks for the vid at least got that part knocked out.
I’m a new tech at my first shop and I got this same problem on a 2017 Cruze. It only toke me about 15 minutes to found out it was the purge valve. I hate doing diagnostic because I don’t have any experience yet.
On 2011 I have rough idle lean code and misfire. I can sure hear a vacuum leak how will spraying water help it's sucking in not blowing out , what would appear? Oh I just remembered the motor will change speed when I get water on the leak, right?

Careful, this doesn't happen often, sometimes it could be a combo of damaged intake booth not measured by the MAF.
That's why it's recommended you take it to a shop for proper diagnostic services.

Can't afford to just waste time on this. Engine still sounds fine.
Terry B There’s only 2 things that can go wrong 1) Too much air or 2) Not enough fuel. Just gotta find out which one it is and where the problem is.
Excellent job
Good stuff amigo! my daughter's 13 cruze is actin up so she just dropped it off and took one of my vehicles. SUB'd
The only thing he did not explain, (and I don't understand) is, how a vacuum leak would BLOW OUT Smoke rather than suck it in -???
We used to use throttle body cleaner, or something like it, and spray an area to see if engine Revs Up! (can be dangerous : )
This is how tutorials should be done thank you!
Good video and keep on doing more, and may the Lord bless you.
Very very good explanations! Thank ya.
I have the 1.4t and I had stabilink and Trac and running to lean so hopefully I can figure it out with this vid. Thanks.
Did you figure it out?
Same issue here but haven’t seen any answer yet
I’m trying 🤝 glad they’ve been helping out.
Great tutorial. Very informative and professional. Thank you.
Thank you. I have this issue as I'm watching your video. Well done.
So I got one that runs lean with the purge valve plugged in. But unplugged goes to normal fuel trims. I smoke tested through the purge line towards the tank and no leaks with canister vent valve commanded closed. And with it commanded open pours smoke from canister.
Awesome video! Hector, thank you for bringing your knowledge in to the internet!
Had PO171 code. Cleaned the mass airflow sensor and used Techtron high mileage fuel cleaner. Reset check engine. Check engine light has been off 250 miles. My opinion is the the Techtron cleaner is the fix.
Your the man. Thanks boss keep it up. Wish I found ya sooner!
Beautiful video, good explanation, do u have a po172 video?
Great job Hector😊😊😊😊. Thanks so much for your knowledge and sharing😊😊😊! Wishing you and yours' a very happy and safe holiday. 😊😊😊. Thanks again.
Gracias, likewise 🤝
Definitely could be the problem on my 09 Aveo5. I will check for this before changing the fuel injectors. Just wish I had the scan tool you got
Richard Hynson any code reader that gives you live data will do 👌🏼
@@HomieHektor well it was not the breach valve. It was actually the PVC valve. Which in an 09 Aveo5 is built into the valve cover. I had to replace the whole valve cover.
Richard Hynson sound about right 🤘🏼
@@HomieHektor By the way. Thank you.
Hector I’m in the Pomona area need to take my car to you
Thanks bro. you just saved me alot of money.
Nice 👍🏼 Feel free to use the gratitude link in the description. Glad it helped 🙌🏼
I drive a 2012 Cevy sonic and i have althe same trouble code. Is it the same as the cruze?
Great video I have a 2013 Cruze with codes P0171 P1101 checked the purge valve the suction is not loud but you can feel it.
My 2014 is throwing the same codes, hence why I’m here on this video lol Did you find out what the issue was?
@@jxcorona13 I did some testing & cleaning of other components it seems that my purge valve is on it's way out. I let you know what happens.
@@jxcorona13 It was the purge valve. Thank you for making the video you saved me from having to go to a dump water repair shop in this town I live in.
I am getting that code on my 2014 mini cooper, can I use the water spray, or throttle plate and air intake cleaner on the engine?
Your a good little mechanico
I’m a new tech at my first shop and I got this same problem on a 2017 Cruze. It only toke me about 15 minutes to found out it was the purge valve. I hate doing diagnostic because I don’t have any experience yet.
Please can you tell witch tube you entered the smoke line... what is the name of that tube?
Nice diagnosis & repair Hector.
Hayward's Automotive Gracias Homie 👍🏼
I enjoyed thank you bro
but what is the name of this vacum and what his motions?
great vid, I am having lean issues and this is such good information
.
On 2011 I have rough idle lean code and misfire. I can sure hear a vacuum leak how will spraying water help it's sucking in not blowing out , what would appear? Oh I just remembered the motor will change speed when I get water on the leak, right?
Great video bro awesome tech techniques very good job man keep doing what your doing ✊🏼👍🏼
