@@LongLiveYourTurtle I got her (turns out it was a she) two days ago. She’s really living it up. She went from a 20 gallon tank to a 50 gallon tank. She’s a yellow bellied slider. Should I be concerned she’s not using her basking spot? Her tank water is heated or is it best not to heat the water?
I'm new to the world of turtles and I have learned SO much from your videos. Thank you! Our adult daughter became very ill and we became the proud new parents of her turtle "babies". A red eared slider and another I'm not quite sure of... maybe a Western Painted? I know that it's a native species to our state of Texas and that it's a couple inches smaller than the slider. They have been together since they were both small and get along great. We are needing to get a new home for them and love the set-up you have for your "kids". Keep the videos coming...
Hey buddy, thx for the blueprints and information on this turtle condo. I've made my own version of yours. You need to get some shared pictures / videos of people who followed your specs to make a condo and continue the tips and tricks of the turtle condo DIY.
Good job! One thing I have read, however, is that the air pump should be above the tank in case of backflow. I installed a shelf above my tank for just that purpose.
Great video!! Just came across your videos looking for a basking area. Great project videos on that. Im looking to build one too and just looking for ideas and yours was great! Was thinking about using the large open area for an extended basking for the turtle. By adding another small shelf (like the ones used to hold the screen and clear covers on top) for the bottom to rest on and stop it from going into the tank, maybe cut another hole for just a exit no ramp and adding hinges for it to be opened and a hook and ring for it to be held up if id rather have it be like the original design. adding the extra platform for the turtle to have extra space to roam around and just to make use of it. Ive just noticed that my tank is about 2 lengths of yours if not a little over, The heights about 6 inches more. Simply just trying to make the most use of the space.. so far thats what im looking to build unless you could give some ideas!
Thanks! That sounds cool! My turtles actually don't use the extra "above tank" space very much. They really only care to be under the heat lamp when they need to regulate their body temp. Otherwise they are pretty skittish and prefer the water. So I'd suggest, if you are adding more out of water area, to just add another heat lamp over it where your turtle can bask. That way they see it as something they can use. What kind of turtle do you have?
Tank looks awesome! Very cool topper. I was wondering why you dont have a heater for water temp in the setup. Maybe I didnt see it. If you dont have one, then I'm wondering why not.
Does the wood hold up well with the tank and water? I would think wood would eventually warp or get a little funky from the moisture and humidity from the tank? I've been thinking of making something just like this but have been dreading having to use acrylic, wood would be much easier!
The using outdoor rated paint helps protect the wood very well. I did not notice any warping or mold/rot after a year of use. Acrylic is expensive and difficult to work with, wood worked out well for me!
Have you added a line to add water? That's something I'm thinking of doing. No more buckets! I have 40 gal I need to build a top for how did you pull your measurements
Not yet! I will when I have a house to try it with. For a 40g it will be about a foot smaller, otherwise everything else should stay the same. Maybe shorten the ramp a bit too. Good luck!
Would love to know how you built the add on I have been looking to make something similar. Also where do you get the supplies so they won't have harmful chemicals.
Hello, I was trying to understand what you said you wrapped around the ramp so the turtles can claw it and be able to lift themselves up to the basking, but I just didn’t get it, can you write it down for me?
Good afternoon sir. I just got a 30 gallon tank to replace my 10 gallong tank (my turtle is 2 yo, I know i am late about changing its size but had a rough year)... I wanna build it properly from the beginning sso that I dont need to worry about it for the next couple of years (i do a lot of work so dont have time to do little changes every month). I really liked you idea about basking area and I wanna do similar design, but for my 30 gallong tank. My question is, what is the total weight of your basking area? My 30 gallon tank is obviously shorter in length as well as little less in depth, so I dont wanna put too much stress on it. I also came with an idea on how to make your basking area little lighter by adding side acrylic windows instead of using side pieces of wood. But my concern is weight which tank can hold while it fully filled with water. Yes, I can do a half size basking area, but I like the edia of a full size because it gives to the aquarium its rounded shape. Thanks very much and I really hope you would be able to help me on that matter (didnt find any contact info on your channel).
Well hopefully you got it but if you had the money gor for a 75 gallon to 100 gallon. My friend told me that turtles are really good swimmers and live in deep ponds so starting big is a real big money saver. He also said to get a filter that filters more gallons than your tank. Its less changing and clean water. He also adds plants that help maintain the water clean and also has some small critters that help his tank kept clean.
I would say that is a bit risky, check out this article about it: www.myaquariumclub.com/can-you-use-beach-sand-in-a-freshwater-aquarium-15758.html. I would instead use play sand from home depot (which is cheap but needs TONS of rinsing) or pool filter sand (without any chemicals and needs very little rinsing)
@@bueryaquett7519 They look cute and I want them. I am doing alot of research so that I can be fully educated on their needs so that they are healthy and happy. That Salmonella part is what got me, understanding that I have a weakened immune system I must be careful. I have an empty aquarium for now because I am really still looking at options and equipment needed.
Surprisingly, the sand in my tank rarely gets pooped up. The turtle are constantly moving it around and my filter does the rest. If it does get dirty, I suggest just moving it around to loosen the crap (you can use your hand or a stick) while you do a water change. If it is extremely gross, I would remove your turtle or other inhabitants so they don't get bombed by the bad water. That's an extreme case though. Good luck!
I am currently using the filter media it comes with for the most part, however I removed one of the filter pads and filled a basket it with just Fluval rings - amzn.to/31f0HMd... try to get lots of biological media in the filter, pads are great but rings and sintered glass media like amzn.to/31h1PPE are great at breaking down ammonia and nitrites prolonging filter cleaning and water change cycles. good luck!
