  • Making the most of some fine autumnal weather and Dartmoor at its best. An afternoon bike ride and overnight camp using a 2m by 1.5m tarp shelter and small single layer tent. A good opportunity to practice some bushcraft fire lighting using Pine Tree Resin and Cramp Ball Fungus ( Daldinia Concentrica ) as tinder.

Bonehill Rocks @ 2:06, it appears you are actually pedalling on the moor itself (it not being a bridleway or designated track). I did much the same once (different tor) and arriving at the rocks, I was met by a Dartmoor Ranger (park warden) who, having shown his ID, in no uncertain terms advised me that I was breaking the local rules. He was going to report me but accepted my apologies. Fair cop.

Same thing happened to me approaching Haytor off-road . I had not seen a tiny sign on a post and got warned and asked to turn back to the road. I'm not aware of any other parts of Dartmoor having this rule but I can understand why at Haytor and perhaps Hound Tor. I avoid Haytor now and use the road as I ride on by.

Dartmoor - strictly no fires. Also, leave no trace. So no destroying land, which includes ripping up the ground

The idea of removing the turf is that it's is put back afterwards. This is the practice of leave no trace.
