- Mom Kestrel comes in with two prey items and feeds her babies. Junior comes around and gets up there to eat and grabs a big piece and she pulls it back again and he goes tumbling forward at 7:41. lol Mom tries to feed this long piece and keeps pulling it out of their beaks. 2nd prey item at 12:34 and the oldest is passed out in the corner and #2 chick gets to swallow half of it whole! Watch the feet go down! Mom Kestrel had 12 deliveries and all chicks ate well. Thank you for watching!

Four downy American Kestrel nestlings are tucked into a gravel-bottomed nest on private property near Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin. The nest box is located on the side of a traditional limestone-footed barn, overlooking a rolling grassland that slopes away into folded hills and forests. Cornell Lab & Raptor Resource Project have teamed up to provide this new live cam.The kestrel is North America’s littlest falcon & packs a predator’s fierce intensity into its small body. It's number one of the most colorful raptors - the male’s slate-blue head and wings contrast elegantly w/rusty-red back & tail. The female has the same warm reddish on her wings, back, & tail.
Egg laying dates for this nest were on May 8-15-17-19-21; hatching dates for the four nestlings were June 14-16-16-18. The 5th egg was non viable.

I was rooting for that fella. It clearly needed more food since it was a smaller than the other three.
This really lets us see how trie is the phrase “Survival of the fittest.” The bigger, stronger ones get fed more, therefore increasing their chances. ❤️

I just can’t get enough of watching these little ones eat I’ve been following them since they hatched n they are so funny to watch I love how the cuddle up together n when they walk they move so fast with there skinny long legs they move from one side to the other so fast it’s adorable
My favorite part is when the mom rips the flesh from the mouse and feeds it to her children.

Wow! The first feeding was the funniest feeding I have seen on any nest. I couldn't stop laughing! And Junior can really hold his own. They are even more entertaining than the Jersey City Falcon sisters were. 😂😂😂 Thank you, Lady Hawk!

Somehow, or any otherway unbeknownst to us, the mother has put the older chicks in check and allowed the youngest to be in the front of the line to eat. Amazing!
IKR - Looks like it was the look
Peregrine falcons and kestrels are definitely more equitable in sharing food than stork mothers or osprey mothers. I haven't seen sibling bonking or aggression so far in either. True, the youngest and weakest don't survive in times of food scarcity but the mother kestrel tried to feed them. Which is why I preferv watching kestrel and peregrine nests.
I watched stork mothers thin out their nests by killing/dropping the youngest, the weakest or the runts. I couldn't watch more than two of those clips. I didn't know that this was the way they ensure only the fittest survive. There was no food scarcity.
And an osprey mother in Scotland ignored her trapped youngest chick who died of hypothermia. The two surviving chicks are doing well.

The little one sure is feisty. Came from the back and worked his/her way up front. They sure are getting a lot. Dad must be a great hunter. The largest one looks exhausted after all the feedings.

I think it was dead actually. They seem to sleep bunched up together. I saw another nest thing where a few chicks randomly passed. But those were titmouse though, so ya never know.

Junior is very creative and is getting right up in there! He ate a whole rodent by himself yesterday too while his bigger siblings watched!!

That baby is a brute he bitten at one of the big birds then pushed his way to the front. as long as the little bird gets enough to eat im pretty sure he be the dominate one over that nest..

Hi blueovalgal they really do look like they are waiting in line, When they get older - one chick will grab the entire prey and try and swallow it whole. If it can't do that, then another chick will grab it out of its sibling's mouth and try and swallow it. If that does not work, Mom will grab it and take it lol

13:44 - 13:59 the big one almost ate the whole thing till mommy took it back. I thought he was going to choke, but after sharing for just a little he finally ate all the rest at 14:44
Thanks, Ladyhawk, for sharing this cool new nest! I'm curious whether the chicks are blind at birth. It looks like the youngest one is not quite fully sighted yet. (Either that or s/he is on a bender, lol.) Do you happen to know? I realize you're still learning, too.
When hatched they are blind and they slowly develop their eyesight over the next week or so. Junior is 8 days old so should be seeing better now :)
Thank God the little one got its share.

Hi Gary - they were fed about 4-6 times a day - usually every hour -to two hours! All four fledged successfully!

I laughed so hard! At guts lol. The Falconidae, while always Xtra Xtra, seem to be more equal feeders than many raptors. Love how the hobbie mom rotates around the rails to get to both chicks, and peregrine moms really try to get to everyone. Guess with kids like these, you have to do what you can to keep order! And what was that invisible force field mom put up behind Jr? 🤣😂 Maybe she took an Amazon delivery of a pet fence! She's like, "Hey, this is just the ticket!". Swipe.

This is a common occurrence we doubt food comas. When a chick gorges - they end to fall a sleep afterwards! Sometimes they fall a sleep while eating- wake up and keep swallowing and rest again!!

I was video taping a female today 8/03/18. She killed her dinner in flight and ate it on top of a telephone pole. I never seen this bird before. We have hawks around. I looked her up in my birdbook and there she was with those bold stripes on her head. Beautiful bird. So they are in the falcon family?
Hi Leigh - that is wonderful you got to see a kestrel catch and eat her prey! Kestrels are the smallest in the falcon family! They are only about the size of a mourning dove but they are fierce!
