STUNG by a Bulldog Ant!

  • Mark Vins is rolling up his sleeve to enter the sting zone with the dreaded Bulldog Ant!
    Since the Bullet Ant sting no other insect has been requested more for a sting test than Australia’s Bulldog Ant, aka jumping jack ant. Armed with massive jaws and a stinger filled with formic acid, these ants attack in swarms and are avoided at all costs by locals throughout Australia. Tales of their stings are legendary and reach far from the golden coasts of OZ.
    Will this jumping terror live up to the hype or fall down the ranks of the insect sting pain index?

It always astounded me how fast they move for their size, a good half a meter a second I'd say. They usually hunt alone too, basically the epitome of quality over quantity

    • @jordanverhoeven3156
      @jordanverhoeven3156 Год назад +1

      @@akrilla5929 No worries, mostly easy questions to answer. So for the Guineas Book of world records Myrmecia Pyriformis is considered the most dangerous ant in the world. Thus it would be safe to assume its the most venomous of Australia's Myrmecia, however a close second would probably be Myrmecia Pilosula (Jack Jumper) as it stings people more frequently and causes anaphylaxis in people yearly.
      As for largest bull ant, that easily goes to Myrmecia Brevinoda, however since bull ants can be monomorphic it means they can vary in sizes. So the largest Pyriformis queen can be larger than the smallest Brevinoda queen, but the largest Brev will be much larger than the largest Pyriformis queen.

    Welcome to what my childhood was like during primary school in Victoria, Aus. We had nests all over our school grounds, we'd all get bitten at least once a week no joke!
    Always wondered how they'd compare to Bullet Ants. No idea how happy I am to see this. Thankfully haven't been stung by one since leaving primary school, great lesson learnt to not run over the mounds for fun, and poke sticks into the holes.

    I have never heard them called “Bulldog ants”. Here in Australia we call the “Bull ants”.
    When I was young, probably around 6 or 7, I was on a drive with my family. We stopped on the side of the road for some reason and I got out to pick some wild flowers for my mum. I didn’t realise there was a bull ant nest nearby, and by the time I got back to the car I had them all over my little body stinging me. I had to strip off my clothes and sit naked in the car while we tried to find a doctor.

    Bulldog ants are known as bull ants(myrmecia pyriformis) in Australia. The jumping jack or jack jumper(myrmecia pilosula) is about half the size of a bull ant and can jump about 10cm. Jumping Jacks are way way more aggressive than a bull ant

    During my childhood, I had the unfortunate encounter of being stung by a rather formidable Bullant measuring a full inch in length. The sensation was like the forceful blow from a hammer upon first contact. In all honesty, I initially believed that I had been struck by an external object, perhaps a stick, until I laid eyes upon the creature perched upon my ankle.
