I've always felt that Alexander O'Neal was a very talented performer. It's tragic that he fell into the drug trap. I knew a guy in Oakland who worked at a venue called Kimball's East and that place showcased ALL of the great R&B talent imaginable. Alex was booked and the guy that I spoke of used to do drug runs for him. We found out that Alex could smoke crack, cigarettes and drink liquor and his singing voice never changed. He was a phenomenon. I play his Christmas album every year and my favorite song is "My Gift To You". Alexander O'Neal will go on record as one of the greatest R&B singers of our time and I wish him nothing but renewed success and a speedy comeback. We miss you man. We're waiting on a comeback album featuring Cherrelle. It will happen. Wait and see.

Prince fired him and thank goodness he did that. Because we probably wouldn't have known what a great Singer he was. Mr. Alexander O'Neal had numerous of hits after hits as a Solo Musician. During the 1980s & 1990s. I still have my Cassette Tape Single of Love Makes No Sense. And other Gem songs by him. I've always loved that Song If You Were Here Tonight. I loved the Video as well and I also loved the collaboration he did with Cherrelle.

Patrick Guillory This interview was done several years before Prince death. Probably if you would interview O'Neil today about Prince, it would be a totally different interview. Today he would in retrospect thank Prince for the valuable experience of getting fired so that he could move on to do his own thing and have his own style of music. I've heard Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis say the same thing. I'm sure that today he would look back and consider it an honor to have known Prince personally.

  • @aprilwest9852

He said, prince fired Jimmy jam and Terry Lewis. For missing a gig due to snow. I heard Jimmy jam speak on another interview saying prince fired him for making other music behind his back, and prince found out about it.

They did get fired for producing other acts in a nutshell. They were in Atlanta working with the SOS Band and they went to the airport to make their show with Prince but got snowed in. They got fired and decided to continue producing The SOS Band which helped them open the doors to their success.

I love me some Prince, but I can't stand how all these folks are acting like Alexander was a failure just because Prince became a worldwide Superstar. O'Neal may not have made it to Prince's level, but the man has HITS. You can't turn on any grown folks R&B station without hearing "Saturday Love" a few times a week, with "Fake" and "If You Were Here Tonight" coming in as runners up. Here in Detroit, 92.3 plays HIS songs as much as they play Prince's stuff, and that's saying A LOT.

I loved him too. But he had an ego the size of God and anyone who knew him
knew that. There are many many stories of artists working with Prince who described him as super competitive, under handed, and constantly wanting to be worshiped and adored. If you were in his company and were not particularly in "awe" of him, you were not invited back lol! He was very different from the image that is portrayed. Yes he was a musical genius, and yes he stopped doing those sexually suggestive songs later in his career, but he also did a lot of damage as he single handedly ushered in *androgyny and sexual confusion for many a young men* Do you realize the permission he gave to people to be explore their freaky nature, and go ahead and be gay? Whether knowingly or unknowingly, Mr. Nelson brought destruction with his music and it has had a lasting affect...
