"In the mid-50s the government started an underfunded agency with the simple and laughable purpose of establishing contact with a race not of this planet."
And here is an exchange between Agent K and Agent J in that same movie that suggests they aren't:
J: What branch of the government do we report to?
K: None, they ask too many questions.
J: So who pays for all this?
K: We hold patents on a few gadgets we confiscated from the visitors.
So, either they are government funded, but poorly so (because they don't report to anyone that they actually have found aliens), and thus have to get most of their money from patents on alien technology, or they were once funded before being officially shutdown and now run their organization privately.
So yea Will Smith Works for the government.

From the title to the trailer, I fully expected this movie to underwhelm me in every way, but I was truly pleasantly surprised. The humor is sharper than it is in most kids movies, and there's a quiet depth to a kid whose mother died violently looking for nonviolent solutions. Sterling cracked me up throughout, too- he was arrogant without being too obnoxious.

My absolute favorite part of this movie is that they explained the pigeon-transformation process as a result of CRISPR Cas9 technology-- still an exaggerated stretch but the bio geek in me was elated at its inclusion.
I used to just randomly say 'You just drank an ingestible formula which uses a CRISPR Cas9 genetic editor to resequence your DNA on a molecular level. Science rocks.' to my friends and theyd look at me like I was insane lollll

I wanna be honest...I wasn’t expecting much out of this movie, but it was actually pretty enjoyable. I actually laughed watching this which is rare bc I don’t normally find animated movies even remotely funny.
I really do agree. When I had first seen the trailer I was already thinking that the movie was going to be honestly kinda bad or the very least decent at most... then I saw the movie and it was really enjoyable and good in my opinion and I suggest that if anyone is looking for a good and funny movie to watch I suggest this.
The fact that one of the characters has an emotional support animal and no one comments on it, is amazing.

The "Insanely irrelevant conflict near the end of a kids movie cliche" is an important addition to the story. As the "lowest point," the climax at the end is more dramatic.

12:10 Have you ever been to Venice? I've been to Venice. I've been to that exact courtyard in Venice. I bought a masquerade mask at a stall in that courtyard. Let me tell you that I had to fight through a crowd of hundreds of people to get to that stall. There is no way that there are only two people in that courtyard, no matter the time of day. I don't believe it for a second. Granted I was only there once, I still highly doubt this situation. Please correct me if there's a curfew or something I don't know about that goes on in Venice.

Did that phrase actually mean something before that awful book series? Like when you're looking for paint
Morally, there are people who see things in black and white, and then there are people who see things in shades of gray. The phrase is used to refer to times where there are a lot of layers and nuances to consider when determining if the situation, object, person, etc. is “good” or “bad.”
So, specifically for the 50 part, too.... was that ever common?
@@chrissonofpear1384 Yes, it used to be used somewhat regularly, though I do think the number is arbitrary. One of my favorite childhood songs references this phrase with the line "clouds are rolling through these skies in 50,000 shades of gray." Now I can't listen to an old favorite without E.L. James tainting it. Anyone new to the song will also now make some pretty strange assumptions about the line
