And then they fought with bitter rage
The dwarf and dæmon, flame encaged
One victor, one to pay the wage
Upon the beast's back, Boic clung
Where treasures 'round the dæmon hung
Boic seized a diamond like the sun
He gripped his blacksmith hammer dull
      To subjugate the dæmon's soul
He drove the gem into it's skull
"I PURGE THIS MOUNTAIN, HEAR MY VOICE
YOU SHALL LEAVE, YOU HAVE NO CHOICE
FREE FROM SIN WE SHALL REJOICE"
In Boic's reign, they lived a creed
      Devoid of avarice and greed
Where wealth is meant to serve a need
Forbidden gates stand at the hole
To remind us of our goal
Our wealth is found inside the soul

A random (scout) and I (eneginer) beat the first mission by ourselves, next mission we kept getting swarmed and picking eachother back up, all was lost till a gunner joined as I went down for what I thought was the last time. We picked up a driller in our 3rd mission and it was smooth sailing then on out, after them and I beat our fifth mission we went on to do my 1st elite dive, a true fight, a battle against the clock for when I had to hop and go to work. Honestly, I think the new player experience of DRG is the one area where it falls short. 2 friends and I got into the game. They bounced off it after 5 hours. I thought the game was...okay. I decided to stick with it for another 10 hours and the shift in my perspective was like night and day. Now I have like 500-600 hours with no sign of stopping anytime soon.
If I can offer my thoughts for a moment, the biggest issue with the game is that the first 5-10 hours don't showcase all the massive build variety, or chaotic adrenaline you see at "endgame". All the weapons in the game have a TON of depth and nuance to them, but until you get those unlocks they all feel really basic and straightforward. Likewise, everything below haz 4 feels pretty boring due to pacing, but you can't break INTO haz 4 until you have your weapon unlocks because of the difficulty spike.
If there was one change I would suggest for DRG, it would be to massively accelerate the initial unlocking speed of weapons and upgrades. The "tutorial" phase for weapon progression does a disservice to how many options you get as a player. I'd bet money almost everyone who bounced off DRG during those first 10 hours did so because of the slow pace of Haz 2-3 and lack of weapon options to show off the depth of the game.
Edit: I'm not talking about Overclocks at all by the way. Just that initial unlock rate of all of your primary and secondary weapons, and their upgrades. Things like the EPC are defined by their tier 5 unlocks like TCF and burning nightmare. Until you hit tier 5 you're unaware of just HOW much fun that weapon is. So you might try it, get bored, and not stick with it. That happened a lot for me during my initial playtime. Most of my favorite weapons I *hated* the first time I tried them.

After those "protect the drill" stages, Dorettas head gets ripped off in the explosion and you can pick it uo, and carry it all the way across the stage and load it into the droppod. Theres unique dialogue for it and everything. The fact that enough love was put into the game to acknowledge my irrational attachment to a drill named Doretta is just insane. Then they write some nasty stuff in the chat and leave the lobby.
They think that this way they can give me shit and prove their power, but I perceive these attempts to ruin the game for me as sabotage by pointy-eared leaf-lovers.
If I need to complete some missions, I do them either solo or in a private session with friends, and I go into multiplayer just to feel immersive experience or for additional challenges. And the insidious sabotage of the elves will not stop me from destroying the damn Caretaker and shoving its data rack trough their asses up to their ears. And even if I don't succeed, I still have nothing to lose, because I've already completed all other tasks. I just get another reminder of how "sensitive and kind" my dear neighbors to the east are🙂

1300 hour greybeard here. Deep Rock is by far my most played game, and what I love most is the casual nature of it. It is really just a pick up and play kind of game. I have bought all the DLCs myself, and the whole game for several friends of mine just to support the devs and pay them back for the hours of contented enjoyment they have given me. I used the voice chat function quite a lot in public lobbies, and as a result when my IRL friends started to fall off the game one by one, I made the decision to start adding people I met in-game into a Discord, so I would always have someone to play with. Solo play in this game is awesome, in its own way. Ethereal, haunting and really draws you into wanting to know more about the planet itself. Playing solo 100 times to get the Steam achievement actually led me to look deeper into the, admittedly, intentionally vague and limited lore of the game. I still do sometimes play on my own just to test my mettle against the bugs without my friends to cover my bases. But what I enjoyed most, beyond the FREE battlepass system, the seasonal lore dumps we get, the holiday events that change up the hub and the devs that really become a part of their community and listen as best they can, is the fact that everyone is, as you pointed out, just so fucking NICE. I've met DOZENS of new people, whether it was for a single game or whether I added them to a discord, and almsot without exception they have been delightful. There's no real reason to be toxic in DRG, so people either choose not to, or the nature of the game drives those kinds of people away. There is enough variety in classes, procedural generation, weapons, mission types, random boss encounters and the new seasonal content to keep a person entertained endlessly, and I really hope you continue to enjoy the game as much as I have.

    1. You pick it.
    2. You NEVER use it.
    3. If your entire team gets wiped, you activate it and revive all your friends to save the entire mission.
It's absolutely vital to have at least one, especially for the Scout (who ends up being the medic in haz5 missions anyways)

    • @DataPakEM
      @DataPakEM Год назад +35

True, not to mention that it can act as an extra self revive for solo players who need it, since gaining health after IW'ing lets you stay alive after the 6/8/10/12 second period of time wears out, depending on your perk level
I (chronically) play Medic/Support Scout, running the Field Medic perk along with IW.
I only ever have ONE problem with my IW and its mainly an avoidable one: It happens way too often that our entire team gets wiped, and then we all IW at once, because for some reason they decided to take IW instead of using that slot for Shield Link, Beast Master, Dash, or any other more helpful perk for their class, since the other three are all less mobile than Scout. Simple communication would fix this, but the sheer panic of losing the mission so deep into it usually doesn't lead to the most level-headed dwarves.
On Gunner it's fine because his shield is great for that, but for the other two? Better to spend that on building a supportive layout for your playstyle, in my opinion. And at the end of the day, if I fail to save you, drinks are on me when we get back.

I played the first tutorial missions alone and i will always remember when *that* moment of fathomless tomb (ost) hits for the first time. Really makes you see the beauty of the game and how insignificantyou are. And then there is the first time you enter the memorial hall. Long story btw
I hopped back in after season 4 kicks in. Because of the new update i might need to dig it further and finish it all until im satisfied (nope it doesn't yet lol)
I started to look around the space rig makes me wonder this. Isnt a social Area huh? Check my level and got called a veteran makes me think what happen if i go further?
I then explore the memorial hall (finally with headphones) i started to feel the music and then i check the statue "i could level up my dwarfs to level 25 to make gold statue" i think it will look amazing with 4 gold dwarf so i set goal. For the first time.
Exploring new weapons and watching someone else using it making me want to try out myself!
The mission also has mutation! Since i been playing sc2 for long time this game has best mutation design out of RTS which its amazing you could fit some ideas into a game! Different kind of region makes also has a different mutation warning even though it doesnt have a matual mutation set because were set up by a company and an alive planet
Playing with random team is so goofy and funny even tho in a serious situation still pinging about *Mushroom* or *were rich* but sometimes they don't (depends on the server)
The abyss bar make me want to own all the licence because seeing someone hand me a drink that i never seen before and has special effects! (You wont see this in any game at all!) makes me think i could license it and drink it all myself! (My favourite beer is smartsout because i like facts)
Free battlepass? Feels like this game made by santa claus
No way it's free but they gave it for the customer
I couldn't buy the extra content because there are more free skins out there waiting to try out just like the battlepass!
Then the window. Outside. In space it looks so beautiful thought low polygon will look bad but it doesn't. It has more details if you get closer with Black hole beer or using devs to noclip out of the space station
I never thought im actually below the space station and indeed. Its huge. This game able to fit a life into it
This reminds of Half Life 1 where you can interact some parts of the map
This game gives me a feeling of nostalgia. Has a share feeling of nostalgia from older games.
Some games try to make like this but kinda fails to impress it like this game. Truly, recommend to players who seek solo games and has a mood to play together with strangers
      Just remember, one dwarf legend
      Karl

One of the most satisfying things was playing with a friend, discovering that pinging a compressed gold chunk or bittergem caused exactly one voice line of your dwarf declaring, "We're rich!" and no other voice line, ever, making a habit of repeatedly eliciting that line for a moment before depositing every time without fail... and then discovering that everybody else who plays started doing the exact same thing in some kind of weird stand alone complex. I wore a DRG shirt to the grocery store a few months ago and literally got a "Rock and Stone!" from someone. I have a best friend that I play with a lot, but we always have randos join too. You really do feel like you're part of something, and that helps you immerse yourself and escape from life for a while.
The devs are great too, and it feels like theyre part of the community as well. They respond and resonate with the playerbase. They even added in voice lines from mission control to yell at us when we spend entire minutes yelling "We're Rich!" or just staring at a giant mushroom shouting "Mushroom!"

It's not a cheesy build it's the mainstay at Hazard 5. Vampire, Resupplier, Born Ready, Dash and Iron Will is the go-to selection, with some changes here or there (maybe you run non-reloadable weapons so you can trade Born Ready for like Sweet Tooth, Unstoppable or Elemental Insulation, or maybe use Heightened Senses instead of Dash on the Scout etc.)

Iron will is actually one of if not the best perk in the game. The neat thing about it is that not only can you revive other teammates who are down, but you can also revive yourself if you find a source of healing, be it from a resupply, red sugar or from the vampire perk. Incredibly useful for coming in clutch. Just make sure you save it for when the whole team goes down, you only get one and it's a waste when someone can just revive you if you wait a minute.

We mess around of course because any group of friends does, but our favourite thing to do is put ourselves into the world of the game and roleplay a little bit. So we walk through the caves instead of sprinting, we coordinate and deal with swarms and clear out caves in an organized manner. And so there's not really enough silly business happening to miss out on taking in how cool deep rock is.

In my opinion the best feature in the game is the LFG/server system, its so easy to join already occurring games, no matter how far they are into the mission, there is no competition with your teammates, and the cooperation is towards ending the mission and getting the most amount of materials and XP boosters. But probably what contributes the most to the lack of toxicity is that the challenges you do, for most of them mission difficulties DON’T matter, so you can choose to either finish them quick, via lower hazard missions or joining ones in progress, or challenging yourself with greater hazards. It’s all up to you.
Another really cool aspect of the server system is that there is no in-game filter that discriminates on level, so you can be a level 5 greenbeard and have a greybeard gunner with 20 promotions under his belt join because both of you are doing the same challenge, and instead of the game lumping him in with a noob against his will, this is something experienced players can do out of their own volition, which greatly adds to the positivity of the community!!

Iron Will is actually huge, even in SP. Jokingly speaking, field medic and iron will are the only actives we allow our teammates to pick after hundreds of hours of experience on H4/5.
One thing that's noteworthy about iron will is that you stay alive if you get healed. So you can fix yourself up in a clutch. Have some sugar or a supply pod next to you? You can now stand up yourself. Took vampire? Great, just kill a grunt. Are stuck in a very bad to reach spot (the ceiling as a scout, or maybe a big hole as a driller), pop it and fix that situation so someone can actually pick you up. Your whole team wiped? One of you uses iron will and singlehandedly fixes the whole god damn situation, especially with field medic. Rinse and repeat once per team member. As for field medic, gunner shield serves kinda the same purpose, but for everybody else field medic makes sure you can ressurrect someone even in tight spots.. swarms.. bosses, whatnot. Heck, i even recommend taking the prolonged invulnerability as the last armor upgrade, because it plays really well into this whole "get out of jail for free card" playstyle. If you play well, you dont often die. Most of the maps you probably wont have to use these perks anyways, and in that case any other perks wouldnt have helped either. Sometimes tho.. shit just hits the fan. Sometimes the game wants to see you dead and throws everything except nitra your way, constantly, with no end in sight. As far as this kind of messed up mission is concerned, no other perks get you out of these situations as well as iron will and field medic. And it's not even a competition. Tho, i totally suck at remembering cave leeches exist. If i didnt have my mate who is immune to being caught off guard by those fuckers and always saves my ass, heightened senses would be up there too.
While im at it, passives have a lot of good choices. I personally think pocket capacity is mandatory, but your milage may vary. I couldnt live without 60 capacity. Vampire is top tier if you play with iron will, or are a driller, especially using cryo cannon. I am. So that's pretty much 2 reds locked in for me personally. Everything that saves you time or gives you more health is an obvious choice to be considered aswell, like resupplier, sweet tooth, veteran depositer, or even born ready. Along the same lines of thought i actually unironically like thorns too. Many people overestimate it, then become disappointed and never look at it again, but it's great for those situations where there is always one or two swarmers nibbling at you while you have better things to do. Which is like.. pretty much every other mission. In these cases it saves time since you dont have to interrupt whatever important thing you are doing right now, as long as you know what thorns is capable of handling and what will overwhelm your shield. The other passives are, imho, simply too situational or dont provide enough value. Some specific perks may be of use to specific classes i dont play tho; i can see scouts liking hover boots for example.

I also enjoy DRG, and I've also been putting a lot of thought into why the community is so good in this game. In addition to the pieces you noted (which I agree with), I think a number of other subtle, but powerful, design decisions all serve to nudge the game in a more cooperative, less troll-infested, direction:
    - The easiest, spammable social-macro in the game ("Rock and stone!") is genuine, positive, encouraging, and shockingly unannoying when repeated (consider: they took the time to make several variants on it, all just as spam-friendly). You're standing around kinda eyeballing 3 people you don't know? Spam this and folks just start to like each other more. (Compare this to the character voice macros of a game like Overwatch, where hearing "In the desert" 50x pre-match makes me want to shoot my own team).
    - The game encourages people to fill out the classes on a mission, and lets players force that if they want, but doesn't do so by default. Then, it designed the classes to synergize, but be soloable to at least some extent depending on mission type and difficulty. Everyone feels like they're bringing something to a mission, but things won't fall apart without them.
    - (You said this one, but:) The space rig pre/post-mission hangout is AMAZING. Beer? Dancing? Throwable objects? I start 2/3 of my missions having a pre-mission beer with the lads; how many people would really troll their new drinking buddies?
    - Rewards are shared: One player finds a lootbox in-mission, everyone gets the item. One player drops an ammo crate, everyone can get a hit (unless someone is super troll-y, which is rare).
    - Collaboration is rewarded, over and over, in so many ways: Help someone get to a place with your traversal tool? Everyone gets more gold/exp/faster missions. Drop a shield or a zipline? Everyone can use it, simultaneously. There are so many "carrots" incentivizing cooperative, constructive behaviour.
Think on this: DRG has FRIENDLY FIRE. They made a coop game, gave it friendly fire, and folks STILL don't troll each other. That's how powerful the vibes are. Yes, the gameplay itself is tight, the loops are solid, and the weapons neat, but all of that would wither unnoticed if the game were a gankfest...but it isn't. It's something really special, and thank you for giving it a 2nd chance and talking it up here. The devs really deserve recognition for the choices they made; the above, I'm sure, wasn't accidental.

The REAL reason this game is so friendly/the people are the opposite of toxic is because the game is made in a way of teamwork like all of ur tools can work together like engi shooting plattforms and scout grappling to them and so on and then there is the only voice line to communicate (not chat or voice chat) makes you say Rock and stone so you can press the button to say it when for example another dwarf joins in and bam you are a wholesome person and that just spreads around and then there is all quotes in the game that motivate you to "Dont leave a dwarf behind" and others the game silently brainwashes you into these things and to spread them and they are funny aswell wich helps for the wholesome part of it. Like everything in the game is made in a way to be nice so when a griefer joins you just kick him out of the group even when someone trys that they dont make too much damage and the game makes you focus on the objective like killing swarms and getting recources to be prepared for whats coming next instead of team fighting like your concentrating on helping the team and thats just why everyone is so nice... (Ghostship cooked with Teamwork and thats why everyone forgets about being toxic and there is basicly no toxic interactions)

The dwarves communicate with eacother so you don't have to. The roles and gameplay are crafted in such a way that everybody knows what to do without communication. Need to dig in for a swarm? I also had that happen to me before, I got into a game because of my friends but they were rushing through and talking so much that it just ruined the experience for me and put me off from the game. Someone suggested I try it again just with them, and we'd take our time and enjoy it, so I said okay, and got super into it from there.

Yeah the game can be a little overwhelming, but i got the privilege of experiencing the game for the first time along with my friend who was also playing for the first time. It's a lot more easy to take in when you have the chance to take your time

12:43 Well there's the in-game text chat. That can go a little wrong sometimes.
Also, the devs made a wonderful little inclusion of never missing a cosmetic. Didn't get something from a cosmetic tree or performance pass? It's added to your drop pool for cargo crates and lost packs. Missed a holiday event? You can get it next year. The only things that are ever limited-time are the Steam awards items (so far only two, very similar Viking-style helmets) and the DRG Anniversary helmets, as there's a new one every year. Everything else can be acquired so there's nowhere near as much pressure to finish the pass or complete the tree

Every feature the devs implemented is designed to make cooperation more enjoyable than being a douche. People play games to have fun, and you get the most fun out of this game by cooperation.

as a newer player, it may seem fine to stick to a single class, but all of them are objectively fun and you really need to level them all to get the proper rewards.

Even if you may not find a class to love more than your one, it’s good experience to learn the specialties and quirks of your other fellow Dwarves.

@@palecaptainwolfkayls8499yeah, objectively in my opinion engineer isn’t my thing.
He just doesn’t have the mobility of scout or the absolute map maker and crowd control of driller, or the absolute power of gunner.
His just got a prey style Glu gun (who remembers that) and a small shooti boi.

Honestly I mix it up between his Anti-Material launcher, RJStun Bomb, and, since it got updated, both of Breach Cutter’s funny spinners, but I prefer having 3 methods of making Fear Inducing Explosions at a time.
Plus the ability to control where bugs go is fun, too. Just don’t go overboard with the plats is all.
Gunner is when I want to be a sustaining force, Engineer is my go-to for burst _and_ mobility.
