Thank you sir for teaching young men like I the art of drawing. I started watching your videos yesterday and I already have like 20 journal pages of sketchings of all different sorts. In total in one day I have done about 40-50 random sketchings and I'm excited to draw even more today. It's a shame this channel isn's better known, but I'm sure it wil grow. Wish you all a great day, and keep drawing.
Wow. I pray as part of my art practice & I'm now feeling I am blessed to have found this series as one last bit of research/ study while cleaning, before resuming hands on art. 1 metaphorical painting i intend to do involves a chair very similar in structure to the 1 in this video & i didn't realize the power of negative space to this degree. Thanks!
I've known what negative space *is* for a very long time conceptually, but what I really appreciate about this video is the why and how being so thoughtfully discussed and illustrated (pun not intended). What a useful thing, to have that tool to draw on (pun still not intended) when flummoxed by what I'm wanting to draw! Thank you very much.
Your calmness is amazing. I feel your teaching skills and they encourage me to do what you say! The negative space I always thought I understood it. But this video made me realize I really didn’t. Now I have a much better understanding of its importance. Thank you. Karen Dirmish, learner
that one was harder, I would lapse into drawing the outline of the chair, then had to keep reminding myself to concentrate on the negative space. Took a bit to really see the squares in the chair. Got there in the end yeehaa! Thankyou for another great lesson Danny, you are a wonderful teacher 🙃
I've just read your Danny's Essays email. What fabulous achievements and obstacles you have overcome in 2023 👏 I've loved reading your emails/essays, and watching your videos this year, they have been so inspiring. A big happy 2024 to you and your family Danny! 🎉
I like the concept of drawing the negative space, thanks for the example. As I was watching it become apparent to me, or at least this was how I rationalize it in my mind, when you got towards the bottom of the chair, there was a shift. The floor had become more detailed than the chair, making it easier to assess the chair as the negative space. I think this was my take away from the video, and something I have gained. Thanks…
This was amazing. I knew about negative space but had not really used it much. I did 2 rather simple sketches after watching this video. Then I tried something very complicated--a very small Art Nouveau picture frame. It turned out surprisingly well, and I could not have done it without drawing the negative spaces first!
My rudimentary understanding in fooling my visual is to see things in 2D. If i could faithfully copy this 2D visual, and if dimensions and angles are not messed up, it might look 3D on paper 🤣
I learned about negative space a LONG time ago, didn't really get it, never thought about it again. I'm 32 and having spent years self-teaching and messing with things like character design, this helps IMMENSELY in the first 5 minutes. I too have felt EXACTLY what feeling he's describing, and it's put me off from drawing things I love like buildings and scenes. But this makes it much, much more manageable somehow. It's like magic.

I have a dedicated sketchbook and do these every morning!
These are more than lessons, they feel like support, gentle and kind. 💛 Thank you.
Glad you like them!
Thank you! You gave me confidence in myself. I draw and I like it.
That's great! Keep going.

Thank you for teaching us!
It was outstanding indeed.
I think the hardest part is saying “I screwed it up, but who cares?”. That is the lesson for me. Perfectionist….guilty!!
Yes, that's line is so gorgeous! ✨
