I was just scrolling through your streams to understand how you draw negative spaces and backgrounds, and now this video shows up,you're literally a legendary teacher
Jesus died for our salvation and he loves you so much and he wants the best for you but we have to accept his help and read his word which is the bible
3:43 is exactly what I needed to see, I always wondered why my backgrounds were "flat" going to do this trick. I'd love to see more background drawings in the future.
I've been watching and following David Finch for 7 months or so. Since then I've learned so many things from him that i can't describe and i don't have words. He is my inspiration and everything in my art world.
This was the most enjoyable and visually pleasing breakdown of an Asaro head I have ever seen without actually even using an Asaro head. Great content as always.
I used to help Mark Pajarillo with some commission work and he taught me this concept and he mentioned you told him how to do this (along with other concepts). Really cool how you are still passing your knowledge along to everyone now.
I love your point about being able to create en edge of a face with another shape. This is basically just painting! Starting out with the big shapes and then going in and adding the details and softening transitions from dark to light.
A couple of weeks ago I was looking on You Tube for a tutorial on this topic and could not find one that helped. Now there is one for whoever looks in the future from one of the very best. Thank you for this.
What a useful tutorial! I never really thought about this, and it's really important and great to learn! And another thing that these tutorials have helped me with is being more patient with my pencil drawings, which is something I never had time to practice, and these tutorials give me that practice! Thanks so much Dave!
David, I really liked how you broke the flow of negative space shading. This concept is still a struggle for me. But this video helped me start getting my head wrapped around this method!!!
Not too be a stickler, but drawing the window in just shadow, it looked off because of the same line weight was used in the process. But I DO LOVE watching, and learning new ideas snd techniques to use.
Solid foundation teaching. I go for form and shape definition to define contour then add line in my work approach. Have you had a chance to sketch the horses yet? Fun practice is to observe and draw animals as the move.
Hey David, i really enjoy ur tutorials and really inspire me! Current I wan't go be a comic illustrator but I'm having a bad time with male head, like where to put stuff and how to do somethings. Can you make a video about it? It's really hard. Loves the video :).
Thank you so much for your content! If you could, I would love for you to make a video on how to draw perspective grids when the vanishing points are off the page, I always have a really hard time figuring it out. :)
Very good video Mr. Finch. Could you please add to you list of future tutorials something about torso in forshortening? For example the classic Wolverine pose jumping to attack, a person running towards to the front of the page or a flying superhero. It will be nice. Thanks a lot.
How would you draw long curly hair in negative space? Or would that get too muddy? Braides I can do but not sure how to start long curly hair that is down and free flowing
I realized I tend to do this but in a bad way, I use it as a crutch to make up for mistakes in my perspective and shape. I love the style but I really need to learn to draw my shapes the right way from the start and not just fill in everything when It doesn't work out. (I am a very new artist, so when I say shape I mean the "Rock" that you might mistake for a slime in a video game)
David, can you do a tutorial on drawing small characters? Drawing foreground and mid ground characters feels intuitive when it comes to detail. For some reason I try to add too much detail for small scale figures (background, small panels, etc). Then they start to get muddy. If I try to be minimal they turn out looking cheap and unfinished. Seems like every line counts more the smaller the figure.
Thanks for the great video! Focusing on shadow shape gives a very beautiful effect, but I am a bit confused by the focus on shadows for negative space - I thought negative space was, for example, focusing on the triangles between the pieces of wood rather than the pieces of wood themselves. For example in a landscape rendering the gaps of light between leaves instead of the leaves themselves. Or the triangle or diamond shape one often sees between an arm and a figure’s torso. Is focusing on shadows a mental trick to get you to pay attention to the gaps?
Negative space is I think a broad term and has many meanings attached to it. I think negative space in essence is: What you put down/draw = positive space, what you leave out/don't touch = negative space.

That’s a master. Shows the student. Then explains their process to them.
Jesus died for our salvation and he loves you so much and he wants the best for you but we have to accept his help and read his word which is the bible
It's like everytime I'm stuck with something, you realease a 15-60 minute, comprehensive, detailed explanation that solves all of my problems haha
Very important concept, and one that John Paul Leon used a lot. thanks for the video Dave!
RIP
I’ve just realised that this is my style.. hatching to create shapes and shading to create detail. Thank you so much for this.
3:43 is exactly what I needed to see, I always wondered why my backgrounds were "flat" going to do this trick. I'd love to see more background drawings in the future.

I liked this video before it even started because i knew it was going to be gooooood.

You are the greatest master!
I love your point about being able to create en edge of a face with another shape. This is basically just painting! Starting out with the big shapes and then going in and adding the details and softening transitions from dark to light.
I love negative space. It makes me think of Wrightson. He used it a lot.

Awesome video! Gonna fill up a few pages & try this technique! Thanx! 💪🔥
Really valuable commentary on the personal line you draw between realism and legibility in your rendering. Glad i heard you say it.
Oooh can’t. Wait to watch this. I’ve been wanted to know how to do this for a while.
I bought your drawing hands video years ago, it's been a great help.

That's bomb as he'll, I wish I had the skill to do this.
Great video, appreciate it 👣
That one was really cool
I know, i am a bit late to the party. But i have to say, this was really helpful :) And its so flexible in terms of usage, if you think about it :D
This will be my Bible!
i think you were doing this technique on your previous "how to draw hair" video. thanks! i learned a lot
Also on his texture and building tutorial! Finch basically uses it everywhere and it's something I really like to do.

Which is your favourite character to draw by the way love your tutorial
Great video!!
damn this guy is good take it from me, you could not find nothing like this easy in the 90s
Hello sir david, can you do a tutorial putting a shadow or rendering of a male in a full body in a front view? Thank you
Very good video Mr. Finch. Could you please add to you list of future tutorials something about torso in forshortening? For example the classic Wolverine pose jumping to attack, a person running towards to the front of the page or a flying superhero. It will be nice. Thanks a lot.
Hello David,Can you post tutorial on how to draw Neck muscles and Traps please?
great video
Amazing and very informative but please make another one with a different subject like a human face or eyes or anything organic.

🙏💞 Thanks
This would be really fun to do with a a skull reference.👍🏼
actually it's more accurate to draw from negative. because the way light hits object in reality. People tend to counture everything all the time
I see, I click
Воу, прекрасно! Спасибо!
Do you draw with HB pencils mostly?
Plz make a video how to draw believer shadows like humans
Could you consider drawing a spell being casted?
How you sharpening this pencil?
Amazing could you do a ballpoint pen drawing face and how to use lines

Interesting
what type of pencil are you using?
This video is awesome!
What size is your Pencil lead?

my goat🙏🙏
Is there a book you would recommend to learn more about drawing in negative space?
He had the same pencil with zhc. Is it really that good?
What is this drawing device?
