Fresnel Effect (pronounced "fre-nel," the "s" is silent) - the observation that the amount of reflectance you see on a surface depends on the viewing angle. If you look straight down from above at a pool of water, you will not see very much reflected light on the surface of the pool, and can see down through the surface to the bottom of the pool. At a glancing angle (looking with your eye level with the water, from the edge of the water surface), you will see much more specularity and reflections on the water surface, and might not be able to see what's under the water.
@David Lee he's right, but it also depends on the angle of the incident light source, not just the viewer location
Thanks man 👍
@@fu-rankensteinarts8 youre welcome
I see .
@@samankucher5117 youre blinded by the light.
I wish I was 15 years younger, with more time at my hands. Dammit, David, you're doing us a service with your videos.
I'm 17 and gurl mee tooo
Another awesome tutorial Dave! I learn something new every time! :)
A decent artist yourself, Rob!
The torn cloth really opened my eyes... It really is just forms and shadows. At the start I was like "huh?" Then with the cast shadows I started to see it all 😭 thank you so much for sharing this for free!
its crazy.. i've been drawing for almost 30 years, sculpture, animator.. but all for hobby stuff.. recently ive been trying to go at it professionally, especially with this Covid stuff going on.. I've taken lots of art classes in the past, and yea always learn something because i applied my self. But i've been doing a crash RE course of sorts, relearning color theory, line quality, anatomy, digital painting, digital 3d, 2d animation. Videos like these are sharpening and fine tuning my own skills. things I did and never realized, or little things that have taken my art to the next level.. Thank you
It's so easy to get hypnotized or put to sleep with this music while you're talking. I've been looking for a video like this for a long time though!
it helps you sleep?
I am Brazilian and I live in Brazil. It is very good to learn to draw with an artist who is a fan. A hug from David Finch.
This tutorials are literally teaching me to draw, can’t thank you enough Dave 🙏🏻 I hope we can meet at a convention when the world gets back to normal
Thanks for this!!! The metal one especially really helped me, thanks for sharing your knowledge Dave!!!
I love your approach to lessons. Scott Robertson is a master at explaining how light and dark work, why shadows are the way they are, etc - but your approach is so complimentary because you're the master of pencilling - you take his lectures and show how the pencil can represent those concepts through line... Amazing!
The texture lecture is finally here!
ITS SO REFRESHING! would love more industry profesionals to have youtube channel like yours learned so much already
Omg been trying to figure out metallic rendering for so long. Thank u!!!
I don't know how better you are than most artist for lack of knowledge on my part but I'm damb impressed everytime you draw.
He's a legendary comic book artist, what do you think?
@@yoyolol22 I'd say David's the best superhero artist working today. For ALL kinds of stories and subject matter.
Best instruction video I've ever watched... been trying to figure out metal forever... thank you!
mmm, it´s not fair..that pencil is magic!!!
This is an underrated art channel I love the comic style and more people should because they could learn from this guy!
I really needed help with leaves, and not only David shows us how to texture leaves, but fur muscles and a background, thanks David
I LOOOOOVE TEXTURE TUTORIALS!
Video that i was waiting for so long 💯
Oh my God David you're a legend!! Yesterday i watched your gesture tutorial video, it was so helpful! I don't know how to thank you man you are amazing!!
Dude another great tutorial! I’ll never stop to be completely blown away when I see what Dave can do with ONLY a pencil, I think this is what makes a comic artist special, comic artists have to be able to draw anything! impressive most impressive 👍
You're such a grounded person, loves your tutorials!
What I love about these videos is how easy they are to understand and apply and they offer just a little trick or reminder here and there that’s not going to go over anyones head and will probably actually get them drawing and remembering what they learn. Every tip in this style makes executing seem fun and unintimidating. If you have anything that can make a mark, even if it’s a crayon, you can try these out.
Side note it might be worth going into the livestreams to hi-light different tips. There’s alot in there. As a teacher giving all this information back to people, this guy is a saint and just an extremely talented instructor.
Thanks for providing more insight David. I thought your technique on the leaf pattern was smart. Maybe it's just me, but as I progress in trying to be a better comic artist myself I've noticed that the number 3 has been very prominent in many different ways. I consistently find myself using triangle shapes, or the golden ratio in a variety of small ways. Seems like the metal technique a lot of artists use has a shadow away from the edge of forms in that golden ratio area of the said form a lot of the time too. Took me a while to get the courage to tackle metal myself. Anyway, can't wait for your next video.
I am now a pro! (Probably not there yet) THANKS DAVE!
Wow that was a great leaf . I never thought I would say that .
Would love to see you lightly draw a pic of a costume with no rendering, print out several copies of it, then render that same costume as rubber, latex, leather, and cloth.
Clear & in-depth! Best tutorials on the planet!💪i had to break out the sketchbook, for this one!
Excellent video!! I'd love to watch a video about drawing crowds at some point!
Agreed! Crowds are a pain haha
Omg Ive been waiting for this ever since the community post about!

Thank you!

These are great examples, David, beautifully done. I've always admired the Filipino greats of the 70's-80's, like Nestor Redondo, especially for naturalistic rendering. But also Rudy Nebres, who I've noted in the past renders a bit like you, on his figures especially. Good company, at least IMO... ;)
Yes I was waiting for this. You've demystified how to draw leaves lol!
Wow
Excited. Today we try to go from proam to pro! ;)
That's good stuff c:
Looks good sir ! You rock every time and what are you like sir I am not able to draw like that
Man, if you do another one of these, I would love to see leather
Finally this channel is picking up and marching towards its reputation the great artist David Finch
I hate drawing leaves, lol. Great video!
Genial
Good stuff. I really like the 3 shape technique for the leaves and cloth. Simplify something that seems complex. The fur stressed me out lol. Not touching that for awhile :-)
Than you
Perfect I needed these leaves for my predator lol
These are so helpful . Could you do one with how you put down the extra lines for added detail ?
When I draw leaves/flowers patterns, I always take a look at Alphonse Mucha's artworks.
Wow Im early...
Hey Dave ,I was wondering something about the comic book making process . Like when you finish a page or chapter/book, do you need to add ink to it or leave it all graphite ?
I wanna start my own comic and have no idea what type of stuff I need like paper size and whatever else . A video touching on this subject would be amazing ! Love your art as always brother !!
Thank you for this! I’ve been really struggling with texture lately, I’m making my own comic and one of my characters uses a metal bat as a weapon and I’ve been trying to find out how to make it actually look metal-ish
Another incredibly generous gift to us from Mr. David Finch. Thank you!
Like a pro
Can you do a video about drawing leather clothes?
