- Ever wondered what happens when you repeat the same drawing over and over? In this video, I explore why artists like Bach and van Gogh used repetition to master their craft-and how it can improve your skills too. Watch as I draw the same thing 20 times and share the surprising insights I gained. Plus, get tips on how you can use this technique in your own creative journey. As always, another fabulous video with practical advice.
Thanks for watching!
Another intelligent video..... My first theme will be something I'm good at ...procrastination....I'll start it tomorrow ☺
I choked on a hiccup reading your comment.
😂
You are very funny!
I laughed out loud when I saw the little thumbnail portraits of the great masters. Repetition with a twist has definitely helped me develop. Brilliant video, thank you!
Love this!
just yesterday i was thinking about how my sketchbook is just full of Auckland's Harbour, simply because its where i spend the little bit of sketching time i get. but now you have given me a different perspective! its my Harbour series!! 😁
It's all about finding your own personal style!
You are a master at motivating. I'm excited to try this!😁
Thank you, Danny ... this is very inspiring and just what I needed! 🙂
Thanks, I've been drawing whatever is on the kitchen table in the morning. Very much appreciate your ideas for new ways to really notice the world
I bought two of your books (An illustrated journey and An illustrated life) for inspiration but also because of the fine writing by the various artists. But also your videos are a gold mine for inspiration and lessons. I hope you continue to enjoy these videos and that we may enjoy them for a long time to come! Greetings from Heiloo (Netherlands)
Thanks for buying my books and I’m so glad to hear that you enjoyed them. I’ve been making videos on this channel for a long time and I just keep loving it more and more so don’t worry. I’ll be here. Come back again soon.
@@SketchBookSkool I'm on your channel each day, even for 30sec. Keep going!
I stumbled upon this concept before… Thank you Danny for reinforcing it.
Very helpful! I'm excited to get started....I think I'm starting with a thankful series.
I’m so glad I found you. I have been watercolor painting for a year, picking up my art again after raising my family. I knew I needed to hone my drawing skills, and I am here for the lessons. Also, you have a calm voice I could listen to all day. Thank you.
That's wonderful to hear!
This is interesting, and on-target for me. I'm in the midst of a self-created 'course' of study on greyscale drawings using the same subject over and over, and I am learning SO much. And fighting boredom a bit. Currently on the 5th of 9 planned drawings and I hope to complete them all. Wish me luck! Thanks, Danny.
This is a wonderful concept! As always, my decision paralysis will take a while to overcome, but I need to jumpstart my drawing somehow! Thanks as always. Love your channel.
How about deciding to decide later and to start today. Every time you wonder whether it’s a good idea tell yourself let’s wait a week to figure that out.
Gosh, your videos and your art always so comforting and grand. You are like a warm ART blanket.
Wow, thank you!
Many many Thank you Danny for such an amazing, inspiring video... thank you for pushing my boundaries..
Thank you as always for your words of inspiration. Because of you, I always get back to my sletchbook.

I would so love and appreciate a sketchbook tour of your any of your works and thought processes through your illustrations and journalling if that’s something you’d ever consider sharing!
You’ll find some tours on this channel but I am doing a lot more of them for channel members if you’d like to join us.
Thank you for these great ideas Danny.
In one of my journals I search for a short poem to go along with my subject I drew. I love doing this. ❤🙂
That's a really creative way to connect with your art.
I started drawing a different cat every day two weeks ago 😊 and I’m already noticing improvement and it’s so fun to go back and see all the cats I’ve drawn on the same sketchbook
Keep going!
You are genius and my inspiration! Thank you ❤🎉
I'm glad you like it!
I love your voice, it’s like a lullaby. You make me feel like I’m not an alien.
Welcome to our planet!
A good many years ago I commented something here or on Instagram, and I misspelled your name. And I felt so deeply embarrassed I never watched a sketchbook skool video again, though I never unsubscribed.
But I'm an adult now and I'm very glad I was brave today and watched this in its entirety hahah. It was just what I needed. You're a great artist, and to see your art and ideas is a delight, I'll be back more often
I'm glad you're back!
So much gratitude for this priceless guidance and inspiration 🙏☘️🌞
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for another useful video, Danny. I’m going to start another series today!
That's awesome! Let me know how it goes!
Wow I needed this pep talk. I keep getting mad at myself when I can’t paint something perfect the first time. Love the repetition practice. Will try that :)
I'm glad you found it helpful!
Thanks for all of your series and sharing.
Thank you! I'm glad you like them!
Brilliant! Once again. Always so helpful and so amazingly presented. You're helping me rediscover my creative art journey so much. Definitely trying this exercise and doing the cats and gratitude journal ideas. Thank you!
Such great ideas! Thank you.
Thanks. Always good to hear you, and I feel even better after watching one of your videos.
I spent one sticky summer day this year on a little stool and drew a closet door. The cheap kind that weighs very little and has fake panels. Taking several sketches , each one was a bit better than the previous one. When I finished, I had a believable drawing because I opened the door and included the darkened interior. End of series. Now on to the downtown of the New England where I live - more inspiration than I originally thought possible 😊
This is a great idea. Thanks!
I love this idea! I used to do this as a kid just on my own, this video makes we want to start it back up again!
Side note: I love listening to your videos but I have a hard time actually watching them because of the shaky camera 🤢
Thanks for just the inspiration I needed to jump back into my art journey 👍🏻✅
This resonates with me as a photographer. When I started thinking in series, it elevated my perception and attention. I'm early in that journey and excited to keep exploring (I LOVE the idea of doing a series of my shoes - so weird but it just clicked right away!). I'm also learning alcohol inks, and just this morning I made a series of six roses with the intention of learning how to move the inks, recover from "mistakes," and practice layering. Now I'm already thinking of ways to mix things up and introduce new elements. Not because after six roses I've mastered that technique, but in the spirit of practicing (I actually don't mind that word... it helps me release a performative mindset) via a "theme and variations" approach. Thanks so much for the reminder to go deep rather than broad! ~Beth B.
Sounds like you're on the right path!
Why we didn't think about it, so simple approach, thank you very much to remind us about it exploring !
Glad it was helpful!
That's a good idea, I will be drawing with that method, thankyou
Have fun
Fantastic! Thank you, Danny!
Thanks Danny. Just finished my art journal last week and was trying to decide what to do next. Think I will try this!
Susan in the Phoenix East Valley❤
So glad it inspired you!
Great video Danny! One I'll definitely be watching again 🙌
Thank you so very much for all your inspiration, I am hoping to pick up again my love of art and drawing, as I lost confidence, and now having found you and your channel and have started again, and really enjoying having a pen in hand, I have also purchased your book how to draw without talent, absolutely amazing, thank you once again for your inspiration and wonderful videos 😊
You can do it!
I love this. You are so pleasant and easy to listen too great info
Thanks for the kind words!
You r wonderful! Keep it coming, please.
I'm so glad you like it!
Thanks for this insight. Very helpful.
oh
i am in love with the "yestertech" page

I have a fresh sketchbook from Michael’s and it’s the kind that lays flat. I will try what you said. A series.
Like always good ideas. Thanks
Thank you, Danny
This was very interesting, it just recommended to me by YT, even if I haven't looked for something similar at all. But I considered learning new vocabulary (Russian & Dutch) and accompany them with scatches. So I'll give it a try and do it theme based. Time to get a sketchbook and some pencils. Thanks a lot for your video!
Your videos really help and inspire me, thank you so much for them.
I'm so glad!
Wow I’ve never seen your procreate drawings before. They are great! Any chance they’ll be featured in the subscription letter?
And this practice is a great advice. It takes away the pressure from drawing the subject, because you know you gonna have 20 more attempts at it either way 😂
When I started to listen while eating breakfast I was a bit distracted. I heard you say “seelies ”. Knowing you like to make up words, I tried to imagine the topic. Drawing the first thing you see? From multiple angles? Eyes? Not seals! Tiny sketches of something? Lots of possibilities.
Nice video by the way! I completely agree. 👍
Please don't watch with your mouth full.
Great video I will definitely try this, thanks Danny ❤
I’m glad it resonated with you.
You are very inspiring, thank you ❤
I'm glad you liked it!
This is a very interesting approach, i like the progression sketches of the bitten apple, thank u 🙏
Glad you like them!
I love the Bloodhound in your Procreate dog series! ❤
Autumn is my favourite time of year so I think I'll focus on some leaves. 😊
Awesome, as always!
Glad you liked it!
Thankssss
Sounds like fun.
Repetition is spot on for learning. I need to do this with drawing people. I'm horrible at it yet master drawing animals. Go figure 😂. Off to draw 100 people... 😅
Good luck! You can do it.
Great idea.
I think so too!
Hi Danny, do you think that sketching the same thing over at different angles or time of day will help me improve my drawing skills? Thank you very much.
What sketchbook do you recommend for your creative journal? Do your journals bleed with your markers or paint?
I use many different ones. I'd suggest starting with a mixed media sketchbook. I rarely use alcohol markers unless it's on special paper because they do tend to bleed.
I’m obsessed with drawing our local cenotaph en plein air. One day I will get it right
What is a cenotaph?
a monument or empty tomb that honors a person or group of people whose remains are buried elsewhere
@@gtinsa we have one in each town in Australia to remember those lost in the wars.
Cézanne …Mont Sainte-Victoire, Apples, bathers.
❤
Awesome. October was Inktober and now I think November will be things that bring me joy.
Musicians will play the same song 2000 times. Believe me, I live with a guitar player.
the apple page made my donkey weep!!
I haven't drawn anything for a year or so and don't know why.
Maybe this will help: ruclips.net/video/_Y5JvVSkT2Q/видео.html
Danny, why is “practice” an icky word?
Many people find it dull and a chore. Playing is much less of a drag.
Stuck is my middle name.
Thats funny.
Van Gogh.
The American Icon of pizza trucks!
Sigh.
Still, at least its not as bad as people channelling "Saint German".
Is it really so difficult people?
Is respect so hard?
🤮
@@SketchBookSkool So, if I may?
As trying Google is a bit diff, lets try this.
You know the Scottish Janitor on the Simpsons with the red hair?
You know when he says "Och!" (maybe "Och Aie the Noh!"), well, that 'Och' is the Dutch Pronunciation of the "Gogh".
However, to make things a bit easier, in difference to us Anglophones, they (the Dutch) are happy to let us stick the "G" back on there. (At least from my last trip to the Van Gogh museum).
So, culturally speaking, "Van G'Och" is good.
Van Go is a pizza truck delivery service.
There is a big ol world out there, can we be nice about it please?
