Thank you. I have been painting and drawing every day for a little over a month. I am 58 and lost my husband in July. I took oil painting lessons as a child and a painting class in college, but I didn't pursue it much outside of that. I now draw and paint every day, and it is healing my soul. You have now put words to what I have experienced in the past month. I don't mind long drives or waiting anymore because I see things completely differently now. I have been aware of and drawn to beauty for a long time and dabbled in photography, but being able to capture beauty in my sketchbook with my own hands is a whole different ball of wax. I am always thinking of drawing and painting. I really enjoy the ink and wash style where I can capture a small bit of a neighborhood or house (i love doors and windows with flowers and greenery) or landscapes, or even single trees or objects. As you know , beauty is endless when you are looking for it. I am a professor of psychology and have had the confidence to speak to groups and know who I am, but this is self-efficacy and confidence on an entirely new level. My sister looked at my sketchbook and asked when did I learn how to draw and I said I didnt know I could before now. I feel so much joy about drawing, painting, finding supplies and being.memtored by friends who paint. Every day I cannot wait to find a minute to sketch or paint. I completed through Lesson 4 of your Sketch Skool when I found this video (it really is on the level of a masterclass or Ted Talk). I follow many teachers on You Tube and Instagram and paint and draw from tutorials as I learn to do better at my craft. I did a professional development sessIon at my college and one of the examples I used was from my new life with art. I showed them my worst and first attempt at watercoloring and said that we need to be transparent with students and show them that we all learn if we are willing to struggle and make mistakes. I show them my poor art gum eraser and how it is dwindling to nothing as I learn from my mistakes and redos. I tell them they have to flip that first pancake that we know will be wonky so we can learn and get to the good stuff. I feel so sorry that people are missing out on the incredible joy of creating art. Thank you for helping me be a better.educator.through your teaching. I really appreciate your methods and lessons. You are changing lives, sir.

Sorry for your sadness. I often tell people I'm glad I saved music until my sixties. I made a living illustrating and art directing for fifty years and I'm a bit envious of people who can get so much from teachers like Danny. Even when I painted I treated it like a job. But when it comes to piano I'm just like you. I have a wonderful coach via Skype and at 72 I'm happy to take the slow boat to musicality.

I'd like you to know that your video have completely changed my life and saved my mental health. I've been afraid to draw all my life. And have spent my life longing for this. I was extremely scared of every line I drew. I was scared of drawing, I was scared of life. And then I saw your channel...
And started drawing. With a liner. Without erasing any lines. My hands were shaky, so as my mind.
But gradually I started to feel different, feel confident. It was like a game, not an exam anymore. I drew cool and amazing things, even people's faces and couldn't believe, that I did this. I became more confident in drawing and in my life. Now it is helping me to go through a severe episode of depression and anxiety. It feels like a therapy session, a meditation and a panic attack coping technique at the same time.
Thank you, Danny, for opening this world to me!

I've experienced this! And I started drawing in my 70s! It's amazing. It opened up a new world for me---wow! And I thought things were amazing before. I was already in live with the world, dreaming, writing, studying, in spite of all the normal and great challenges and pains. But when I started drawing, I found a whole new dimension to 3-d reality. Endless discovery. Never, never bored for sure. (And I drew the water fountain at DMV.)

similar here. Only I suffer also this suffocating fury, when I try to draw things and cannot get them, like people passing by, or petals and leaves and trees, or my own face. The more I look, the more I see. It's hard. No sudden gift for me.

To see differently is in all of us. Years ago I looked at the "Batman" symbol and could not see the bat! All I
saw was the yellow teeth (the negative space ). Then one day I must have changed my perspective because then I saw the Bat! Now I try to use different perspectives to see the whole picture. I've found that this helps with learning about people too; patience, understanding, compassion. Thank you so much for sharing your insights!

Danny, thank you for reminding me that the way I look at the world isn't quite like everyone else. I went to art college in the early seventies. Even as a kid, drawing was who I was. I had a long career in advertising and publishing. Even though at 72 I've long since squeezed all the juice out of 'making art' I needed to be reminded that any time my eyes are open I'm always drawing or composing mentally. These people you're inspiring seem to feel the way I do now that I play music, having begun at age 66.

I agree to all these. I started drawing at 4 years old. Was also the only student in my elementary years in school who was able to draw semi-complicated art at the time. I stopped at highschool and college because in Highschool, i had to learn to socialize and connect with friends and activities outside school. College days I had to study, keep my fitness and do a lot of paperworks. It was my “dormant” years not being able to draw a lot. I was at Nursing school at the time. When I graduated in 2011 I got a regular 9-5 job and fell into some good and bad relationships….I had good friends and family members as my support system and one of my close friends reminded me about maybe drawing again.--Drawing to get my mind off things and re-visit who I was when I was in my own world and felt the satisfying feeling of being able to finish a drawing.
Fast forward today, im 34 now and I always kept a small pocket-sized black art journal and I am doing it every weekend for about an hour a day at least. I dated and time stamp the drawings too. Never have I felt this good in a while. And young and old artist who I didnt know saw my works and thought my pieces were great. I dont profit out of it but it just feels good to be somehow appreciated as I also appreciate others works and how they did amazing in their work. I also learn to encourage artists just starting out to keep going no matter how bad the result is. Since I’ve been there always looking back at my old works as a reference how my “awareness” have grown.

Mr. Danny, You are truly so inspiring! Thank you so much for helping me start off on this journey that have always desired for!! 😊😊
And every word of yours rings so so true!! i can feel that sense of calm. And as you so rightly said, everything that i see, seems so unique, lovely, fascinating, ever since i started the lessons . I have started 'noticing' instead of just 'looking' detachedly .
And like you mentioned in one of your other videos, i chose a good sketchbook at a stationary shop where i had gone to purchase a few stationary items, keeping in mind what you said that we deserve good things. What may surprise you, as it did me, was that the bookshop owner , took the sketchbook from my tray of items and gave it to me saying" that's a gift from me"!! And this happened while i was traveling in another country.
Maybe an incentive for me to go back to his store again. But to me, it was like the universe saying" go ahead, take off on your journey"!!
Once again, Thank you so much!! 😊😊😊

I'm mind blown to be honest. I've only gotten here so far after a few days of drawing a long with you. Thanks to the contour exercise I was able to replicate almost exactly what I wanted and even colored it with markers. It's not super clean, or accurate but it was miles ahead of what I could do. I've only been drawing for a few months total, but these videos made me understand things in a very different way than typical anatomy/gesture drawing stuff.
Not saying that isn't important, but this style of teaching lets you have fun nearly immediately, and grasp things within a few days to actually draw something and make it fun. I'm going to continue this entire course. After seeing my own abilities, I'm finally having some actual fun with drawing. Thanks for that.

I have been drawing since I was 9 years old but it is always refreshing listening to a new perspective with an open mind and this was definitely motivating. I am always willing to learn more and shift my mindset so I can pass on the knowledge and help those who might be struggling with motivation or re-igniting the fire within them and love for art. I shared this video with my online art friends.

There are two main purposes for my art. First, it is an outlet for my tornado of emotions. Second, to inspire and spread messages of compassion, empathy, caring, humility etc. To make this world a better place for everyone.
Art like music is international and speaks in its own language. My wish is to use this language to convey different messages. To make a difference and to start big positive changes in the world.
I am probably naive but like Walt Disney said "if you can dream it, you can do it" and Mahatma Gandhi who said "be the change you want to see in the world."

Good day sir, I’m a young guy in my twenties , I’m from Uzbekistan , and currently I am an international student in China , and then Im planning to move to Japan . So To be more precise I’m soon turning 22 years old, and not long ago I realized that I wanna create an anime series and movie , and I thought I would be doing it by assisting my director or whoever, then the more I learn about our I understand that actually I want to do it myself. It is always sad that you can express yourself through art. At the same time can teach someone something. So that’s partially what I wanna do through my drawings. I wanna inspire people show them everyday happiness in our lives. Daily small things that appear to be beautiful but sometimes aare not noticed , and amazing nature that we have. I can’t quite tell when exactly I started learning to draw, but it’s been some time, but I talk about real efforts to learn the aspects of drawing, then I’d say just 3 weeks ago. Somehow, I found your channel and really grateful that you share such an interesting and useful knowledge. I appreciate your efforts. Sometimes I take notes that will be kept for the lifetime, and I’m glad I have some notes and quotes from you as well. I find you very calm, happy satisfied, and thankful for everything. It feels like your character and soul are in tact with the universe . Thank you once more for the content, I’ll keep learning them!🍵🩵

Dear Danny, thank you so much for this beautiful and inspiring message. Everything you describe has been my journey this year. A friend sent me a link to your essays in the early days of summer, here in England. Since then I have never stopped drawing! Until that point I always thought I couldn't draw or paint. Now there just aren't enough hours in the day for me to be able to 'play and create'! The world seems so stunningly beautiful now, all of it! I owe this gift to you. What you describe is exactly how I felt as I became interested and accomplished as a photographer. When I found my long hidden love of photography, I began seeing things as through a lens. I composed what I saw as if I was seeing a photographic opportunity. When I began my art journey, it felt like that and I continue that feeling today with photography and art. It’s just me and always will be.

Danny, your enthusiasm for the power of drawing to change one's life is infectious. I've had some of your books from the library and have been getting your free weekly essay. But watching this series of videos is much more powerful.
About two months ago I bought a small sketchbook that fits in my handbag and set an intention to draw something each day. Initially I was just doing a quick drawing in my lunchbreak from work using a pen. Now that I'm not working I can use different media which is fun. I'm really excited to have formed a habit of drawing each day. Part of this process has been sharing my daily drawing with a friend by email. This accountability helped me to keep going when I was finding it hard to motivate myself.

I've drawn since I was little. For many years I kept a journal that I illustrated from 12 years old to around age 20. After that I just drew in sketchbooks. My skill level has stayed rather low though because I didn't know where or how to learn more about art. I didn't want to learn realism. I don't really know what it's like to not be able to draw. I would imagine it would feel like something is missing. I wouldn't want to instantly be great at it though. I like learning and progress.
