Escape Angle - Does It Matter?

  • The most common picking motions all produce some type of escape ( troygrady.com/p... ), where the pick pulls away from the guitar body during at least a portion of its travel. Does the angle of the escape matter? It can! NBA players shoot foul shots with an arc because approaching the hoop from above makes it a larger target. Similarly, approaching the target string from "above" - i.e. using an escape more perpendicular to the body - makes it easier to hit. Many USX picking styles ( troygrady.com/... ), most famously Gypsy jazz, take advantage of this mechanical phenomenon to equalize the difficulty difference between inside and outside picking, especially across larger distances. Note that your escape angle is not determined by the slant of the pick. It is dictated by the type of joint motion you use for picking. So you can't just arbitrarily use more or less escape. In the case of the most common picking motions, the escape is typically changed by simply switching to a different type of joint motion, including making whatever form changes are necessary for that motion to work correctly.

    I find if you anchor with the pinky doing same forarm rotation as you there, you can control the jumps better aswell.

    Great playing, Troy! Really cool to see up close! I noticed when I play two note per string stuff my motion changes and the inside and outside feel pretty similar. It feels different than when I am playing three note per string stuff. The inside and outside picking do feel a bit different. Probably because on the three note per string stuff I am more Elbow with a helper motion. Great video! 🙂

      Ok, it's morning, and that's when I am more analytical and deep.
      Some ppl say it's important to use a heavy (stiff) pick, but I think it's most important to use a pointy one.
      I prefer mine sort of medium soft (red delrin, I think--at least it's red and medium soft), because I use it to stop the notes a lot (fine control over note duration), and I think a softer pick causes less chatter when you touch it against a vibrating string to stop it from ringing. That's what I've noticed, anyway.
      These days, I don't seem to notice a difference between inside & outside picking.... But, I haven't worked quite as hard as you to get quite as fast. Boy you're fast!
      Anyhoo, that's my 2 cents. Thanks for the video! 👍 👌
      (BTW, in case anyone wonders why I put 2 hand gesture emoticons, it's cuz in some countries, the thumbs-up one means something like "up yer butt" and I have no idea if the "OK" one might mean something similar, lol. In my case, I'm intending the "historically correct USA" meanings!)

    This is what I explain to my students when they ask me about fast alternate picking across multiple strings. As long as you have an even amount of strokes and start on a downstroke an upward angle of the pick is highly favored because you move out of the strings and don't risk getting caught between them while playing fast.
    The greatest benefit however is that you are able to increase the width of the picking motion (which is usually limited by the distance of the other strings when playing perfectly parallel). When approaching very high tempo most people have a tendency of doing bigger motions and using this kind of picking angle basically enables the player to chuck into the strings like a madman and still have clean picking technique. This larger movement then needs to be tamed to increase on speed even more.

      @@VictorNickel I think you should practice both and keep the properties of the practice-sound in mind. A clean sound with no compression needs a lot more attention to even dynamics for example. A high gain sound with effects on top makes certain lines far more forgiving... ideally you should be able to play the same lick in all kinds of circumstances.

    Wow this finally clicked for me. I could do descending 2nps easily but ascending was a nightmare. By adding in a bit of forearm rotation at the end of the stroke it finally feels smooth. In Troy we trust

    Troy! My right hand can move FAST from years of playing thrash riffs. Can we get some videos about FRET HAND technique? You shouldn’t step on the gas if you can’t steer as Paul Gilbert says. I think my left hand is what’s keeping me from my next breakthrough.

    Hey there Mr.Troy I found your channel around 2017 I think it was the episode on Eric Johnson alternate picking I didn't manage to develop 'speed'. six months or so (an italian young guitarist youtuber) did an episode about fast picking and mentioned your name and channel so here I am back! This is the 'greatest' channel to me recently I've been watching the Andy Wood episode and a past one with huge Mr. Steve Morse!     Great video. You will have someday one video comparing the differences in feel or tone on various techniques using soft pick grip/having the pick a bit loose and leting it glide over the strings vs using the edges with a more firm grip?

    For me the up stroke has taken the longest to get the feel of it, but once you do ur picking will be nice and clean and crisp. It only took me 4 years though.

      @@kipponi Yeah but most players like me would've probably never figured out the hand movements if we didn't discover Troy Grady.. I could be wrong . I know Troy Stetina never mention upw pick slanting or dwp pick slanting ,or 2 way pickslanting.. to figure out that stuff out by just feel , is beyond genius in my opinion.

    I don't even know how you get an escape angle (0:33) that steep. The pick is way over the strings. If it's not steep enough dps doesn't work.
    The outside descending version is much tougher than ascending inside picking.

    My problem has always been that once you give a larger angle, you also lose more hand coverage for muting the strings you arent playing, this causes a lot of noise which is not present doing DSX motions. As natural DSX picker (Paul Gilberts old tapes are to blame, no doubt) how can I mute the strings and use USX motion?

      If you typically use a Di Meola / Gilbert style of wrist motion where the escape is DSX when you perform a tremolo, then strictly speaking, continuous USX motion is not available from that form. This is why those players are mostly all DSX or DBX players. This is enough to play any line with pure alternate picking. But you generally do not see those players playing George Benson, Eric Johnson- or Yngwie-style lines where you intermingle downstroke sweeping and upstroke escapes. That type of vocabulary is specific to USX form - which uses a different arm position, motion, and a downward pickslant. It's its own thing. Think of these like two different languages, each with their own vocabulary. You can learn both, and maybe switch between them on a phrase-by-phrase basis. But most of these self-taught great players just learn a style and do everything out of that.

    My issue is that I can’t push the pick through the string on the way back up. It gets stuck. So I have to change the angle to a more neutral one which eliminates the escape path. Don’t know what to do at this point.

    It remains an unsolved problem. There are many "if conditions statement" in guitar playing/style on the left hand position you like to play.Because every time you move the strings to hit, it increases the distance over delta time (dt) especially when you rotate, compared to staying in 1 string.

      The most common DSX motions do not work like this, so an equivalent option isn't really available. Typical elbow and wrist DSX motions use an pick grip, arm position, and joint motion that produces a flat trajectory where the pick moves almost parallel to the strings. You can get a more vertical escape path if you use a trailing edge grip and a different arm position, but this is not very common.       Not exactly. The examples I'm playing here are all even numbers of notes per string, but *not* all outside picking. For example, if you're playing a line where every string is two notes - down-up - then doing this ascending will be inside picking for every string change. Descending will be the reverse, outside picking. It is the "inside" case where using a high escape picking motion, like what Gypsy players use, makes those string changes easier, particularly when moving across larger distances.

      @@troygrady On your Steve Morse vid he identifies his picking obstacle as going from a string closer to the ground with a down stroke to a string closer to the roof with an up stroke .... for me Steve defined in its true form "inside picking" , I think there is a difference between "inside sting crossing" and" inside string picking". This vid , with all due respect contains inside string crossing.

      Yes. George's technique is similar to the one you are seeing here, just with a different pick grip. He is a USX player ( troygrady.com/primer/reference/escape-motion-reference/usx-motion/ ), where the picking motion is diagonal and the upstroke escapes. This means that as a general rule, all phrases done with pure alternate picking in George's vocabulary must be arranged so the final pickstroke on every string is an upstroke. There are a few exceptions where the motion changes slightly but for the most part, the upstroke rule is how George's technique works, as well as the techniques of other famous USX players like Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen, Django Reinhardt and the Gypsy players, and many others.
