I've just got the standard 2018 09. I have no issues with suspension, unless you're riding within an inch of your life you won't have any issues. Fuelling is decent. Torque is unreal. Tyres aren't great, but they can be changed, so that's not an issue
You will notice it when you take it to the track or ride with quick riders. I have a MT09 and a S1000r which is chalk and cheese but a big price dif too. I also had a street triple r which was down on power but much better front end feel. Back to back is the only real way but, hey, enjoy your 9. Great bang for buck and lots of mods to personalised.
Sam Grattan I test rode the SP the other day but am thinking the standard bike with new tyres and a bit of set up time would be just as good...... How do you find the front end in crappy weather?
Alexander Wotherspoon I'll be honest mate I've only ever ridden in the wet once, so it's hard to really say. I didn't really have any issues with the front end in itself, but the tyres were awful. But then again they're not that great in the dry either, so when I have some spare cash I'll be changing them. I can't see you having any issues in the wet mate, unless you're trail braking and pushing hard into corner, which let's be honest no one does on the road in the wet, especially with the amount of diesel and oil on the roads!
Sam Grattan totally agree mate, the roads where I live in London are way to shitty to be riding like that on any bike. I know tyres ain't cheap but along with some decent pads they are a massive upgrade on stock. I'd be saving a grand so could get some new rubber after a little while... Cheers for the reply👍
Alexander Wotherspoon don't get me wrong the tyres aren't dangerous! They're designed for touring and just don't really suit the bikes characteristics and personality. They'll still get the job done, especially if you'll be using it filtering around London. No worries mate, any more questions let me know!
An excellent concise review, with very balanced and knowledgeable comments and criticism. I have a '15 MT09 and all the reviewers points are bang on, particularly the inherent balance of the bike. Doesn't stop it being a lot of fun though...
I've been riding FZ-09 for about 3 years, 20K miles. I've applied all possible fixes from suspension to the engine. There's one outstanding issue which you had described perfectly - the bike is fundamentally imbalanced. It understeers pretty bad, it sits high and can't get the bike to turn properly unless you load the front by braking hard and hold it for as long as you can. I've read hundreds of you reviews about FZ09 but you're the only person who pointed that out. I'm going to lower the forks enough not to touch the wheel during full compression and see if it helps. Thanks for the tip!
When you guys do the comparison between the Street Triple R and the MT09 SP, put the same tires on both, something like the Michelin Road 5 that most riders will choose to fit.
was expecting more on road footage, i even rode along you guys with my mt 07 on the way down. Bike looks amazing, sure would love to test it on that road.
Like the new format you guys are trying, the more relaxed delivery is easier to absorb and just nicer to listen to . Sound quality is a little hit and miss, can't wait to see the next video!
The trouble with being an expert it is often difficult to put your mind into an understanding of the average motorcyclist. With adjustable suspension this bike can do just about all an average motor cycle rider needs. Just remember we are not all Valentino Rossi types. My MT10 came with what I would call soft road set up. Adjusted now for my style and because I carry a passenger most of the time it is still a rocket when I fly solo. This Mt09 with these assets, looks like it has now come of age.
This is exactly what i came to realize just a few days ago. Me, the most beginner beginner out there, has no standards to test these awesome bikes against and I don't think I'll ever even want more than what they have to offer
I think it was just not set up right, if they set it up stiffer then I guess they would be afraid that the bike wouldnt hold to the road so good because of tourist type tyres.
What he's saying is that the bike used to be bouncy and unbalanced (not enough weight on the front), now it's just unbalanced, it needs to be lowered at the front and rised up at the rear.
Problem with lowering the front is, as it comes out of the factory the bike is already in a stance that it pushes your groin against the tank. If you lower the front you’ll find yourself pushing against that tank even more. I know as I’ve got one. Ended up buying a Shad seat to address the problem. There’s loads of 09 riders that have done the same,.
Back in the day, I had a 2003 SV1000s and lifting the forks 5mm through the yokes completely transformed the handling. I couldn't believe how much of a difference an apparently small adjustment could make. It literally went from feeling horribly vague and on the verge of crashing all the time due to no front end feel (like the MT-09) to feeling like I had the front axle in my hands. I'd love to see what an MT-09 would feel like with the same thing done.
Two questions to MCN if I may please; a/ MCN state (timeline 03:50) that the stock OEM tires (Bridgestone S20) are 2012 technology and are different from the ones you buy off the shelf . How can this be and how did you get that information? Is this an error on your part maybe meaning to say that Bridgestone have now superseded the S20 by the S21? b/ Is there any information on what rider weight the front springs are for on the MT09SP? Great review and looking forward to maybe another video with how to sort the suspension to this bike. Would interest a lot of bikers I think.
Thanks for the review guys. I have an MT09 SP. I’m certainly not a pro rider but I do a lot of sporty riding on mountain roads. The bike straight out of the box feels nimble, light and brakes are pretty damn good... however I wasnt 100% happy with the handling on corner entries. The front just didnt feel right. It required extra effort to place the bike where I wanted to. Swapped the tyres for a pair if sticky ones and its now its perfect. About the front suspension being too high. You could be right, it does feel high. I might attempt to adjust it myself or just take it to a specialist.
What tyres did you put if I may ask? I'll be riding in winter/wet as well and I am a little bit nervous with all these comments about tyres/front feel....
Fabrizio Cossa I put on some Michelin Power 2CT which actually is old generation since you now have Power 3. But I know this tyre really well and has an awesome feel and grip on the road. I’d say if you put on any pair of decent new sticky tyres you should be completely fine.
So once you've added up the cost of getting decent rubber, taking it to a suspension specialist and a slip on. Aren't you looking at the spending the same amount of money as you would on a street triple rs? I know I'd rather have the rs all day long.
Sounds like you'd be better off getting the standard one and getting a maxton shock and fork internals which will be set to the rider. It will work out cheaper.
I'd actually take the MT09SP for a single reason really. Cost. Servicing costs in my country are high for Triumphs. From an economic perspective, the MT09SP is hard to beat.
I wonder if MCN did a long term test with the bike and set up as they would have liked to. It would be interesting to see what they would have come up with.
When I ordered an ohlins rear shock for my bike they asked what type of riding, what type of roads I normally tackle and how much Is my weight. With that in mind, that springs are different depending on the weight of the rider, what weight of rider does a stock MT09SP aim for? 80kg?
To all the guys complaining about the sound... do not look a gift horse in the mouth... As for the bike, I have only six years riding experience but I disagree that the modes are useless. Got a XSR900 2016 and I find the rider modes valuable and confidence inspiring. B in rain or dodgy weather, and A for most everything else. I had a Fazer 600 before, and I was intimidated at first by the extra horses and torque, so I rode in B mode for a month or so to get used to the power, and then progressed to STD and A. Not all motorcyclists are as hard core as these journos think!
Gerhard Symons I do tend to think that people often do this. They measure everybody from their own perspective. So a professional journalist can sometimes be living in a world of his own and maybe couldn’t understand that not everybody would in fact ride the same way as he does. But having said this, we all want to hear what a bike is capable of given we are of the ability to ride it to its limits. So in that way we should listen to their perspective and then use that as input with retrospect to our needs and abilities. Complex, even saying this, but I guess you get what I mean lol.
Eh, I've never cared for modes either. My superduke is the first bike ive ever bothered to change modes on and thats only because its the only way to adjust traction control intrusiveness. If I could adjust TC I would never touch them. Think about it though, Rain mode? hah! My rain mode still leaves me with 100hp, as much hp as your bike has to begin with. Then your bike has rain mode which cuts its 100 to whatever. There is no set definition to rain mode. They just cut the power some arbitrary amount. Its useless. I dont like it because it makes the bike not do what I expect it to do when I operate the controls, the last thing I want in rain. All I would use it for is if someone less experienced has to ride my bike for some reason.
Jakalwarrior, again from what you’re writing I can safely say that you’re an experienced rider and that you are surrounded by good roads. Sadly that is not the case with everyone. For instance I live on an island with so so roads, the tarmac for some reason has no real grip mostly for loss of good grit. These modes help us ride these very powerful bikes on our roads and then we get to fully enjoy our bikes when we tour on them abroad. Plus as you said at the end of your write up, modes do help those getting used to these bikes and a good rain mode is extra beneficial on slippery roads. If it wasn’t for these modes And the clever traction control functions that are being introduced very little folk would be able to handle such power. You can only look at MotoGP for confirmation. It does help on bikes with big power.
I just think that the riding modes should be built into the rider itself. Intimidated by the power? Give a little less throttle. Easy fix. People expect to be able to twist the throttle fully on a bike in bad weather and then are surprised when they lose grip. Do they ”need” riding modes? No, they need common sense.
In the video you said the Mt09SP vs Triumph speed Triple R will happen in the coming weeks. It is now 1,5 months after and still no comparison? When can we expect it?
I’ve got an MT09SP in the pipeline so it would be very interesting for me to see what tires you choose for it and how you set it up. Watching this space...
@@oneeyedghouljr.2.054 Must agree that S22’s suit the bike, especially for our roads and weather here in Malta where temperatures are in the region of 10 to high 30’s depending on the season. We don’t get much rain either. Colder climates would benefit more from the excellent Michelin Road 5’s. I’m currently sporting Pirelli Diablo 3’s which are very similar in my experience to the S22’s. Different climates benefit from different tires I think.
I like how people complain about tires new bikes have your going to ride it gently while you brake in everything properly then eventually your mostly aways going to buy the best tires you can find for your preference
Personally I like a analogue dash better...especially the speedo. There's nothing worse than looking down at the digital speedo to see it fluctuating between your actual speed and a couple more readings...if you know what I mean. PITB.
Fully agree about the bike being inherently imbalanced. The front end of my 14 just did not inspire confidence and always felt off to me even after a fully upgraded suspension and geometry adjustments. Still a fun bike but it was not for me.
Guy's, Guy's, Lets get one thing straight, If you need to spend 2 grand more, To get the bike it should have been in the first place. Then that is a marketing con. Yes all bikes that are new , Have there faults, But why does the buyer have to pay to get the bike they should have got in the first place. It's all about getting your money, Making you poorer, and them Richer. End of rant.
If it's aiming at the Street Triple R (or the RS, for that matter) they don't need to worry about the auto-blipper, as Triumph didn't fit their bike with one either.
I'll miss the snatch throttle and crappy suspension, I treated it like a supermoto (tipping it, not leaning in) and it responded perfectly, it was more motard than supersports and it was set up that way, I am still looking forward to trying the newer one but unfortunately the sp's colour scheme is not for me!
The one thing I find really frustrating is the European models seemed to get better improvement and then they even have a SP edition all of which is not available in America!
Your review on any strip triple competitor is a broken record - has been the same for years. Triumphs are great, owned one myself but it just seems very biased. I do like ur reviews but it makes me sick on how you pick on new issues everytime instead of highlighting how good the bike actually is, especially if everybody else is giving pretty good reviews. No point of your upcoming comparison as we all know your biased already.
When Mt09 launched back in the days(feels like yesterday) I fell in love but certainly not by the looks that is for sure, yikes :P That engine and coupled with the nimble chassis wowed my heart. I know that st3/daytona still are sharper and such but the Mt09 engine is such a peach. Why does st3 not have a similar engine character that is that playful? when it comes to D675 I can understand that it is more on the ZzZz side but st3 should be more hooliganish and playful like the mt09.
I keep hearing that the MT-09 are "better and cheaper" than euro bikes, when you factor in the after market exhaust to make it sound better than a blender, and then consider it has dirty cheap brakes and suspension. You start to realise why its sold cheap. The SP is supposed to be the model that fixes those three things, sound, brakes and balance/suspension. Seems Yamaha fucked up again. But people will still buy this cause it looks like a hooligan bike, its cheap and appeals to younger riders.
Slides the rider into the tank which for me is unforgiveable. Make a seat that is comfortable. The rider is going to spend some time on it. Better be comfy. But otherwise a very nice machine. Make mine an XSR900. The XSR700 is actually more comfy than the MT09.
Video sound quality is rubbish. You recorded sound too low in the first place then in editor you lower it -11db! (check "stats for nerds"). The guy on the left's mic isn't even working at all, so his audio is about -20db being picked up from gut on right's mic, then the guy on the right talks and it blows out you speakers if you have volume cranked enough to hear guy on left. It is not rocket science to balance audio in editor. It takes a few extra minutes.
To much talking (with appalling sound levels), not enough footage of the bike/riding - how about some onboard footage with commentary/critique - everyone else does it - c'mon guys you are supposed to be professionals......
Show more off the bike,,,blah blah blah,, frigging great bike,,,I've got one,,and buying another one,,tyres!! Who cares,, put some sticky rubber on,,job done,, awesome machine,,,
You guys sitting at a table and reviewing the bikes is why I unsubscribed from your channel. It's so boring, we don't want to watch you sitting at a table discussing bikes, go out there and do reviews while riding and standing next to the bikes. Just my honest two cents.

The updated 2018 MT-07 is VERY much improved in suspension action. It's very good OEM.

Honesty I prefer Micheal Neeves just on his own giving his opinion. More on bike footage please.
In guernsey channel islands the mt09 is only 6990 £ we dont pay tax brand new
Had to look up OE tyres....can't you just change them?
I really don't like this review format MCN has started with.
Could you do owner reviews of the gear specifically tech air gear for us. Interested in them
Wouldn't it be better to have the review comments along with the bike visuals than spend a bulk of time in doing the interview?
I luv mine, does everything and more than I will ever need 😉
Can you do a review on the 2018 Honda CB1000R, that is a good looking bike !
The price here in Denmark is about 15,727 GBP on sp. well too expensive !!!!
Why isint this coming to the US?
My god the sound is horrific
I keep hearing that the MT-09 are "better and cheaper" than euro bikes, when you factor in the after market exhaust to make it sound better than a blender, and then consider it has dirty cheap brakes and suspension. You start to realise why its sold cheap.
The SP is supposed to be the model that fixes those three things, sound, brakes and balance/suspension. Seems Yamaha fucked up again. But people will still buy this cause it looks like a hooligan bike, its cheap and appeals to younger riders.
Electrics Nut MCN have never been able to get their sound right!!!
I m Japanese.
MT09の海外の評価が気になります
なんと言われているのですか?
thisvideo’s MT09’s impression is GOOD?or BAD?
sorry..my English is no good(T_T)
By the way.my BIKE isYAMAHA MT-07.
The problem with the bike is just the imbalance chassis, too much squat of the rear suspension makes the bike steers wide.
Thanks for the reply. Now Iam interested in tracer 900GT.please do this too(^ ^)
I don't care about the sound quality, I just need more volume. Can hardly hear it with my phone volume all the way up.
That bike: Nemesis The Warlock.
Bike Magazine said the suspension on the SP made the handling worse - ie don't wast yout £800 on the suspension.
Rubbish, especially with S22's fitted - they must be paid by Triumph...
Slides the rider into the tank which for me is unforgiveable. Make a seat that is comfortable. The rider is going to spend some time on it. Better be comfy. But otherwise a very nice machine. Make mine an XSR900. The XSR700 is actually more comfy than the MT09.
A Nice Bike ....🚦🚴😎👌
Review?
Video sound quality is rubbish. You recorded sound too low in the first place then in editor you lower it -11db! (check "stats for nerds").
The guy on the left's mic isn't even working at all, so his audio is about -20db being picked up from gut on right's mic, then the guy on the right talks and it blows out you speakers if you have volume cranked enough to hear guy on left.
It is not rocket science to balance audio in editor. It takes a few extra minutes.
Yamaha Mt 09 is perfect. you are just jealous Europe dont make bikes like this. .l. VIVA JAPON
Aing maoal ka beli broow jng babadog bae ge sush cmn hayng na bae gableg motor moge...
please sort your sound out ta
At 4:23 you say the rear squats under hard acceleration. The rear of a motorcycle will rise under hard acceleration. Not squat.
read comments about sound problems and poor format, decided not to waste my time watching. I'll be back though!
Who cares,, put some sticky rubber on,,job done,, awesome machine,,,
Another MCN video with crap sound. Come on guys it looks so amateurish ...
Cutting corners on tires is unacceptable. No thanks, Yamaha.
new 2021 SP comes with S22's standard. That's what you have to fit to the 2018 SP as well - it simply transforms the bike...
No Kawasaki Z1000H2 SX Review other channels are doing it WHY you used to be the first not any more hence why I don't buy your paper anymore SHAME
Can't hear it
Great review. ."Yeshua / Jesus is the way"
I got my brand new gsxr 750 for 8400 so suck it lol
Bikes do understeer? did't know that 😨
Psicin co if the front doesn’t load enough in turns it would do that, just as a car would.
stephen spiteri done that in cars... but in a motorcycle seems scary losing traction in the front.
Dont think they mean it actually loses grip.
I can't listen to this
Maybe some Euro Techno music will make you happy.
Neither can i, i read the comments
Show us the bike ,enough muffled babble
MCN is a joke... this bike is brilliant! Boring c...s! There

cant watch no more awful!!
I cant finish this clip, the audio is terrible!!!
You guys sitting at a table and reviewing the bikes is why I unsubscribed from your channel. It's so boring, we don't want to watch you sitting at a table discussing bikes, go out there and do reviews while riding and standing next to the bikes. Just my honest two cents.
Boring!!!
