  • Desperate for fighters to combat the Japanese, the Chinese Republic began development of several aircraft to fulfil the role; aircraft that have left scant trace of their existence.

Wow!. I get the sense, especially with the XP-1 that there was a Chinese genius hard at work here, trying to overcome impossible challenges.
Whoever he was, it's a damn shame his name is lost to history. He and his team, deserve to be remembered.

Another two of the many interesting what ifs you find in aviation.
Sure neither one of these were going to be world beaters, that's almost beyond question. But in the circumstances even attempting these two planes and getting as far actually test flying them is nothing short of remarkable.

"Boomerang" was the first plane that I thought of as well! Boomerangs are available to ANZAC players in my Axis&Allies house rules as a cheaper although less effective fighter option that doesn't require any reliance on lend-lease.

CAC CA-13 Boomerang, wholly designed in Australia and used effectively as a ground pounder that could defend itself if needed. Testing against Allied and captured Japanese fighters showed that while slower could outturn everything ( even the much vaunted Spitfire and Hurricane) and out climb everything but the Japanese fighters, it's dive characteristics were exemplary and stable in all axis making for an effective gun platform.

Gullwing one looks like a Zero and a Ju87 were being naughty...interesting little machines. Well done, Ed, finding them at all!

@@Pete-tq6in The Myrsky nose is quite short, so I don't well understand what you're on about there. Further, the Chu lacks the gradual curvature found on the Boomerang. Aside from that, the canopy lines of the Chu are vertical, as with the 36 and as opposed to the Boomerang, and the Boomerang tail is considerably taller than that of the Chu or P36. Regarding the wing leading edge, the wheel bay protrusion is mildly larger on the Boomerang than the Chu.

Hi Ed A Very interesting video about Chinese Built aircraft,
Do you think the Chu XP 1 May have been an attempt to build a dive bomber/ground attack aircraft as it looks very similar to the The Junkers Ju 87 Stuka or the A-31 Vengeance,
I always enjoy your videos they are very informative and you touch on quite an awful lot of topics and aircraft that others do not,
And aircraft that have been forgotten about in history, so I hope you keep up the good work thanks for all your hard work on producing these videos.

The Chinese Air Force kept up the fight from 1937-1941 thanks to the Sino-Soviet Treaty; the Americans didn't really give a damn until the Japanese invasion of the U.S. colonial friends of French Indo-China and the Pearl Harbor attack of course. Although the Chinese still pursued with the aforementioned homegrown fighter designs, the impetus was low since now the Chinese were getting the P-40 Warhawks and P-51 Mustangs... many of these will fall into the PLAAF... in time for the Korean War... some of these Nationalist Warhawk/Mustang pilots even switched allegiance from the ROC to the PRC, including Major Xing Haifan, who became a MiG-15 pilot and shooting down two F-80 Shooting Stars over Pyongyang before being relegated to training duties.

i have always been very curious of those 2 models. both have its pros and cons. tho i cant put up any proof i do believe the weapons of the XP-0 were 2x 12,7mm M2 Browings 600 rounds total and 2x 20mm AN cannons [Roughly 120 rounds per gun]
again i cant confirm or deny but it would be barely flyable with the 4x 20mm cannon layout due to the extreme weight and drag.
