    if someone gives you the finger you give them the finger back its that simple. Anyone who thinks its ok hunt someone down cause they gave you the finger must have anger issues. little kids have flipped me off before, and i just shake my head cuz they kids, and when adults do it i just flip them off back. some of yall are crazy.

      +viking Mckim thats really where it should have ended a finger back...

      +cutlerylover I'm sorry but finger forward or back was not the way to handle the problem. What does the finger signify? I think it means F you which based on your excellent discussion of male aggression and related things will generally result in someone taking offense and sometimes believing they have been "called out" and their manhood questioned. It isn't how it should have "ended" but the real issue is how it should not have "started". Love you man, but you are wrong here.

    • @vikingbrowski3718

      Kilo Watt where im from if someone wants to call you out they call you out. just saying. the middle finger stands for FU not im calling you out which i guess some people think that is what it means.
      but when the old man flips off the kids tearing up his yard i never thought he was challenging them to a fight.

      +viking Mckim I had this one occasion where i was turning right and there's lots of traffic. finally i get a break when a truck was turning into my road. so i wait until i'm sure he is turning and i make my turn. not 10 seconds after i finish turning there's a woman in a older model car right behind me and she honks her horn. So at this point i knew what i did was totally fine, no one could have gotten hurt and i had enough time to turn and this lady is just pissed that she couldn't sped past the truck like she wanted to. so i blow it off. then i look in the mirror and she flips me off. then i said well fuck you too lady and flipped her off. she gets pissed but turns off the street.
      thats where road rage should end. the exchange of fingers and a parting of ways. nothing ever good come out of people getting out of their cars.

    • @vikingbrowski3718
      @vikingbrowski3718 8 лет назад +1

      MrAgnosticman right flipping someone off is common when driving. usually the other person can not hear you, and you want to let them know they pissed you off using sign language kinda. I think that is much different than walking up in someones face on the street, and flipping them off 4 inches from their face.

    A similar thing happened to me. I was backing out of a parking space and I guess a guy decided I was too slow and sped his car up as if to hit the side of my car (my side) only to brake 6 inches from my door and gave me the death stare. I turned to look at him. Gave him a warm smile and a lazy salute. Then I proceeded drive off feeling like a boss.

    Dude when you have millions of people on the road driving around under stressful conditions, things will happen. But when you give people the finger you force things to degenerate quickly into a physical confrontation. You can confront people without going there. Just remember it's "road rage" its just not worth going to jail over.

      +BairyHalls I just stare them down with an evil stare letting them know that I am not happy with them, I don't know if they see me or not, but it makes me feel better.heh Usually do this when people are speeding past me going way over the speed limit and not using their turn signal when passing. That is a pet peeve of mine, you should always use your turn signal when passing and at stop lights no matter if you are on a rural or urban road. I also can't stand creepers, you know those people that creep through a 4-way turning left when they should have stayed at the stop light. But yeah I never give the finger, just the stare. Agree though, this particular situation would never have happened if Jeff wouldn't have flipped him off. That guy was in the wrong as well though from the sounds of things.

      +BairyHalls i have actually gotten good at giving a variety of different waves. i have one that is as dismissive as giving the finger, and when i give it the person feels as dismissed as if i gave the finger...... but they are just mostly confused instead of angry since i didnt give the finger.

    I drive for a living, and used to feel a lot of road rage, and I have had my encounters with other drivers. My advice, whether you're in the right or not, if someone thinks you cut them off, throw up the peace sign, not the middle finger. Easier said than done sometimes, but it lets everyone get on with their day better.

    I think you handled that perfectly, BUT, if he had approached me like that, I would have had my gun pulled and in my lap ready to go just in case he tried to pull me out of that car.
    Traffic-wise, I don't give the finger, and when things happen to me like what happened to you, the road rage thing, I wave to them like they did me a favor. . . which probably pisses them off even more, but that's just my bonus.

  • @paradox7xx

    When I got my concealed carry, my demeanor had to change because any fight I get into is now suddenly an armed conflict. Now my first priority is to get away, I don't care who is right or wrong I just want to get out of there. I also never escalate the situation, no middle fingers, no cussing at people, I will apologize and get the hell out of there. I'm not going to "throw my gun down and give him a fist fight", what the hell am I going to gain from that? The gun is there for a reason, it never comes off, and I do absolutely everything possible to not have to use it. You're awesome jeff, but you might want to rethink your tactics, this situation should have been completely avoided.

  • @Berzerk29

    Hi, I just wanted to say that I totally related to this as a woman. I actually had a very similar road rage experience recently like yours but with another woman. My first experience like this I might add. She followed me into a parking lot and blocked me so I couldn’t leave and wanted me to get out of my car. I didn’t so she got out and started yelling and screaming at me. We exchanged some words but ultimately I made the decision to not feed into her rage or escalate the issue because like you said you just don’t know who you are dealing with. So I managed To calm down , and I acknowledged she was angry which just through her off and eventually she left me alone. Then she picked a fight with another woman in the parking lot because she thought she had been recording. But I’m sure that says a lot about the type of person she is. But you are right in saying that these things happen in a matter of seconds and lives could be changed if we let out anger get the best of us over things that are not worth it. It made me feel better to hear about your experience, thanks for sharing.

    Great story Jeff. I rarely comment on any videos, but I used to be the same way when I was younger. I used to go road rage crazy no matter whose fault it was. Luckily now being 43 and the father of 3 I very very rarely get angry at stuff like this anymore. I had a situation where I guy wouldn't let me over the other day and I needed to get on the highway. So I came on over anyway. The guy was honking and screaming at me, etc etc etc. He didn't follow me.....maybe because I drive a lifted 'O3 f150 with a sticker on the back that says "I love my pitbull" but that's really beside the point. When he was screaming and cussing me and blaring on his horn, I just gave him a smile and a wave and moved on. It really takes a LOT To make me angry these days and I'm thankful for that. All in all this situation turned out not so bad for everyone. The guy got to walk back to his truck with his family, pissed off or not, and everything turned out ok. Much better than lying there with holes in him. 👍

    It happens. I have learned through my life what kind of man I am. When I grew into manhood, I had a lot of growing up to do. My perspective changed when I was younger, and out drinking with friends, and a fight broke out. A broken piece of tooth belonging to guy who I punched in the mouth, got imbedded in my left middle knuckle. I didn't realize that it was in my knuckle until after we left. I got a massive infection in my hand, and it moved up my arm. it was full of puss, and I was inches away from amputation. A week in the hospital on an IV, and I made it through. Sometimes even if you do "beat their ass" it can go very badly for you. When you know who you are, and what you are capable of doing, you will no longer feel the need to prove yourself, and escalate the situation. I'm all for cooling of a heated situation. Things can turn badly fast.

    The best way to avoid road rage is to not allow the other individual to get to you. The moment you gave him the finger you allowed him to get to you. I drive a lot, I always pack when I drive, and I never give the other driver a reason for rage. It just isn't worth it, no matter who is at fault. The way I see it is not worth having to shoot someone over a road rage incident. And too many people are just on the edge and sometimes it just takes a look to make them explode. You, as well as the other driver, were very lucky. And I hope both, you and the other guy, learned something from it.

  • @HumanN8ture
    @HumanN8ture 8 лет назад +2

    As hard as it may be, it's simply luck of the draw that the guy wasn't a complete lunatic and ready to take things all the way. You never know who you're dealing with on the road. Defensive driving should always be at the forefront. I've fallen for it just as others may have, but you have to remind yourself that any slight in that moment, means nothing! Stay on defense and get to your destination safely!

  • @MrSenset

    Whereas I do believe mistake were made on both sides at the beginning it looks like you were the first to start "snapping out of it" and regain your level head. That's good.
    Something I've learned from my experience with concealed carry and the research I've done is that because *you* are armed, you are held to a *higher* moral standard and responsibility then someone who is not carrying concealed. You might try to resist giving the finger in the future.

    Big respect, man. You show the totally mature mindset of a responsible grownup.
    The thing about assessing other guys, though... one of the things about doing martial arts like judo or BJJ or wrestling (a combative sport, IOW), is you quickly learn how you really SHOULDN'T think "oh, I can kick this guy's ass." Yeah, maybe he's 4" shorter and 10 years older and 50 pounds lighter....but maybe he was a state level collegiate wrestler. You never know.

    I'm sure everybody has been in your situation. You handled it the best you could and that's all anyone could do. You set a good example for other people. Everybody needs to need to try and talk things out before things get out of control. I think other people admire reasoning power over fighting power. It doesn't mean you can't fight but it means you know you have other choices. You're supposed to handle things in a civil matter when given the option otherwise we'd be no different than animals.

    I took off at a freeway onramp, one of those side-by-side drag race onramps. I guess the dude next to me took umbrance with the fact that my car was much faster and decided to aggressively tail-gate me for miles. Finally, he decided to get next to me attempting to cut me off. Leah looked over and flipped him off, LOL. So this escalated things. He started swerving at me etc. So she called 911 and held her phone to the window (he was on our right side, me in the fast lane). He realized we were calling the cops and backed off. That de-escalated things.

    I remember a story my uncle told me about a road rage experience that happened to him years ago. I forget the details but he apparently pissed off another driver. My uncle was and still is very confrontational, not a bully or really aggressive, just not about to give up an inch. He's cursed with the 'big nuts' syndrome. They both got out and met between their pickup trucks when the other guy pulled a pistol. This happened on a small road out in the middle of nowhere down in south Texas. My uncle turned and walked back to his truck. He said that was the longest short walk of his life, expecting to be shot in the back any second.

  • @BushidoDevilDog

    Frankly speaking, you played a Stupid game (letting your ego get the best of you and flipping the bird) and won a Stupid prize (a dude Rage-tarding at you because of it). In situations like this...*especially* as an armed citizen, you lose absolutely nothing by making an apology, even if the other guy is 100% wrong, and your "apology" is as truthful as Bill & Hillary Clinton. That way, potential witnesses can say you apologized in case bro wants to get physical, thus making you look like the good guy during any resultant legal issues.
    Some advice I took to heart when I started carrying was Masaad Ayoob's statement in "In the Gravest Extreme" that (paraphrasing) once a citizen starts carrying a firearm, they lose their 'right' to have an ego/talk smack/flip the bird/etc. I had a similar experience where a dude honked as he passed me as I was trying to push my stalled car to the side of the road to let him go by. I yelled "F U!!", he locks up the tires, puts it in Park, ducks down to the passenger seat like he is getting something (a gun, my instincts told me) and gets out raging and puffed up. I had to deflate him by showing my holstered 9mm and inviting him to be on his merry way. Glad this one worked out for you, bro..! Live an learn, eh?

    "He was unarmed". You don't know that. What really happened was you didn't SEE any weapons on him. This is why street fights with people you don't know SUCK. Trayvon Martin could tell you about getting in fights with people who look "unarmed", except he's dead from a gunshot wound.

    • @cutlerylover
      @cutlerylover  8 лет назад +11

      +HelmutDoork I wasnt concerned with hidden weapons I wanted to be sure he wasnt holding a weapon so my reaction wasnt to pull my gun and point it at him, had he had a weapon thats exactly what I would have done, if he had a weapon and chose not to brandish it neither would I

    • @HelmutDoork
      @HelmutDoork 8 лет назад +2

      +cutlerylover - I wasn't talking about brandishing. I was talking about the possibility where someone thinks they are getting in to a "fair" fight and finds out the hard way it isn't. George Zimmerman didn't use his gun until he was getting a ground and pound. A friend of mine told me about some dude who thought he was going in to a "fair" fight and got piped in to a hospital. There was no "brandishing" beforehand, he got blindsided.
      Not fighting that guy in the truck was the right decision.

      +HelmutDoork yeah man people die all the time from a tiny little bump to head, you could take a pounding all day and it only bruise next day tiny little bump, its all over. all lot of the deaths that occur from fist fists are when they have hit the ground/curb. its always better to deescalate but this fair fight nonsense. what if you didnt see his grown up son in the back and you and him were rolling round on the floor he goes in the trunk for a tire iron.

    Jeff did what grown men do, well done. I always thought road rage only happened with young guys but it sounded like this knucklehead was middle aged. It takes a strong man to say "Sorry, I shouldn't have done that". You won't even remember it in a few hours of doing what you planned to do that day. Beating someone up because they made you hit the brakes hard is no good. If you win the guy might find your home and set it on fire in the middle of the night.

I do carry a gun too but as long as I'm inside my car locked up, and I have an escape route there's no excuse for me to even flash it. I wouldn't even bother to give him the time of day.

    Jeff, I love you man and, as a fellow CCW permit holder, I’m concerned about your mindset.
    Those who carry must go out of their way to avoid conflict and confrontations. We must be more mellow and discreet with an easy-going attitude. We take the high road. We would never flip-off somebody no matter what they did.
    For example, in slow traffic, before pulling out in front of another vehicle, roll down your window, get eye contact with the other driver, wave in a friendly manner with a smile, use your body language to ask permission to pull out, and give a friendly wave afterwards.
    If you accidentally do something that sets someone off, quickly apologize, say that you made a mistake and you did a stupid thing. Do and say whatever it takes to deescalate the situation. Do your best to seem submissive (but only in your outward appearance, not internally, in case things escalate). Run/drive away if you must and can. There’s no shame in running away in order to prevent a potentially dangerous situation from getting out of hand. Just keep an eye on the other person in case they start to come after you and you are forced to turn and engage.
    Prevention and deescalation must be high priorities in the mindset of a CCW permit holder.

    1. Never, ever give up control of your weapons
    2. Avoid physical confrontations at all costs
    3. A "thank you" wave, even though you intended is sarcastically, would have diffused the situation
    4. By flipping him the "bird" you became the aggressor. You offered up "fighting words."

    quite recently i was stuck in a doctors office for long enough for the room to feel like it's shrinking. i was sick, and pissed, so i sped down "main street" where the speed limit is 30 or less, pedestrians, traffic, blah blah blah... i was doing 45mph or more, swerving traffic, the moment my rage ended was when this lady was right in front of me. i left a 10 foot strip of rubber and stopped to let her go... i calmed down a little bit, but i just wanted to go to the pharmacy and go home... when i stopped at the next light, i saw a state cop in the next lane. he pulled me over and gave me a warning... supposedly about $500 worth of tickets but he gave me a break. don't rage. its not worth it.

    I experienced road rage on night while WALKING MY DOG. A guy in a jacked-up, custom-painted, after-market mufflered 4x4 pickup came at us at well over the speed limit and wouldn't move over for us. I flipped him off, called him a jackoff, and went on my way. He slammed on his brakes, did a Y-turn, and came back. He got out of the truck and came at me, raising hell. He got halfway across the road when he noticed that my 80-pound dog (who's a total sweetheart) was interested. He got back in the truck, turned back around, and headed home at close to the speed limit.
    Moral of the story: road rage is for idiots and cowards.

  • @chipdouglas3565
    @chipdouglas3565 8 лет назад

    I once experienced a road-rage situation very similar to yours. The guy chased me in the parking lot of a restaurant, parked in front of me, stepped out of his car and was fuming. I soon found out he was an old man that didn't seem like a threat, though I did watch his hands just in case. In the end, I didn't want to be responsible for causing him a heart attack, so I just apologize to him, even though I'd done nothing wrong. He was just a very anxious old man. The reason he got mad, was he was 20 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. At 20 km/h, you're just barely moving and he didn't like that I was tail gating him, which I wasn't, as I kept a two-car distance between my car and his. Personally, as long as someone doesn't lay a hand on me, I'm ok with verbal insults.

    I have road rage too. Its in my blood. :) Dad was driving 5mph over the speed limit in the city. A guy got pissed he sped in front of him and slammed the break on. This happened until he got a few streets away from house. He pulled over. Kid got out had nothing. Dad left gun in car. They cussed each other. Kid said he would hit him but he had glasses. My dad said "You just fucked up now." And gently placed his glasses on the roof and put up his fists and said. "Please hit me because I can't hit you first!" The kid backed up and said something like he was lucky he had somewhere to be.
    You did the right thing. I think he wanted to seem all macho. I will bet you he told his wife. You said sorry to her and the kids and it won't happen again. Then again if he didn't see the neck knife or the one on your mirror. He might have escalated it more. There are whack jobs out there. Good thing you didn't tape it. That make people like him see red like a damn bull

    I remember seeing just an awkward road rage incident, a man and woman started yelling at each other in heavy traffic (one cut the other off) and they were flipping each other the bird and cussing each other out while stuck in traffic and then they ended up pulling up to the same gas station...and awkwardly half heartedly kept arguing
