What a great video. I just completed building a stock for my four year old son for his Romanian M1969 .22 caliber bolt action rifle, where I cut down a beat up original, added a paduak nose and curved butt plate, and the instructions here allowed me to do a finish that looked like the stock had jumped off the pages of a magazine. Well done, Mr. Boyd. Between you and Larry Potterfield, I don;t think there is anything I can't handle on my own.
Just a plug for Boyds... I ordered one of there stocks for my long range Mosin build and this thing is gorgeous! At first I didn't know if I wanted to spend this much on the old MN but after getting it, its worth twice what they actually cost IMHO. I was considering an ATI but after getting one on another mosin, the Boyds is superior! Knocks the ATI's ding-ding in the dirt! Besides that, their customer service is top notch! Next time im in the market for an aftermarket gunstock, they have my business!
i just finished my thumbhole stock for my 95 mauser, and man what a great improvement from the other boring stock it had. the royal jacaranda stock looks amazing after its finished.
Followed the procedure as laid out in the video and my SS Evolution stock came out beautiful. (Sky Laminate) Everywhere I take it people stop, stare, and want to hold it. Usually they are intrigued by the SS Evolutions uniqe shape, but they soon compliment me on the finish. Thanks for the great tutorial! I've got a video on my channel of me shooting my finished SS Evolution Ruger 10/22.
Have done a lot of gunstocks in my time and your explanation for what you were doing in the video was first class and right on the money Tru oil is the easiest but have also used tung oil as well.
I've never met Randy, in person, BUT ... After holding a Boyd's Evolution Stock, in my hands, for thirty seconds ... ... It was (suddenly) as if I had known him for thirty years ! I would have thot it silly, to dote on a chunck of wood, ... would have. Thankyou, Randy, for my Jungle Laminate SS Evolution (93-E) ! (svelte, snappy, ideal portage and holds ... WIELDY ! )
I bought a sky blue laminate stock for my Winchester AE my wife bought me in '96. Of course I had to fit it, just like I expected. Best buy I've made in years!
I am a Gunsmith student in my 3rd year of the night program (3 nights a week 4 hours per night) at Piedmont Community college in Roxboro NC. I am working on my first build which is using a Mauser 98 receiver. I have chambered it 30-06. My RUclips page has a video from a few weeks ago and I plan on putting another one up, I hope tonight, depending on snow and if school is closed. I am trying to research to find the best finish for my stock.
@njmvermont I don't know what action or stock you're looking for, but go to Boyds website and choose your action to see what stock configuration are available then look for the Forest Camo Laminate. It may be what you're looking for. Boyds' finished stocks are not glossy, they are a Satin Finish. Hope this helps.
The kit also contains stain for walnut stocks that you won't need for laminate. So if you have your sanding supplies, tru-oil is all you need. If you follow the video, you should end up with a santin finish. Not too shiny. Good Luck!!
Nothing but respect for Boyd's... I read a story recently about the M1 Garand Stock they made for Darrel "Shifty" Powers (of Band of Brother's Fame). The Garand Stock had the Airborne emblem, Curahee Crest, etc engraved into it. A very well-thought idea and certainly worthy of praise. Google "a rifle for Shifty" to see the whole story. I just finished refinishing a stock for a ww2 Trench Gun. I cheated a bit and used red oak stain and 2 coats of Linseed oil (matches my Garand exactly)
I think the video is good enough as a tutorial on how to finish a stock using the True-Oil method and Mr. Boyd is kind enough to share his knowledge with everyone. For those who think the image quality is not good enough or complain about the audio, keep in mind that before Internet and RUclips instructions came in a booklet with no pictures or bad ones at the most. Stop complaining or making fun of people or post something yourselves, mediocre bastards...
I have a Boyd's stock for my 1917 Enfield & it has checkering. You did not mention how to finish a checkered stock. Could you make a small video explaining how to finish the checkered parts?
I'v been using 220grit to 400grit then to 800grit then used automotive clear on my stock from Boyd stock's the best wood stock's for the price 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 My Savage axis is beautiful looking.
I just purchased a walnut stock from Boyd's. After all the proper sanding, and fitting, why would you apply the Birchwood Casey Walnut stain? Wouldn't you just apply the Tru-Oil finish by itself to accentuate the best grain? Isn't the Walnut stain basically just used for brich stocks, to make them darker and more even colored?
Tru oil has a brownish tint that works great on a brown stock. What if you are finishing lets say charcoal or any of the brightly colored laminate stocks? You wouldn’t want to use a tinted finish.
How do you wet sand with the tru oil finish? That stuff is sticky and makes it harder to keep sanding while wet with tru-oil. I don't understand. Am I missing something?
I have a 98 Mauser small ring action with a .25-06 target barrel screwed on that my dad was building before he died. I've decided I'd like to finish it. I really like the looks of the FA Enterprise target stock, but the only place I saw them is on MidwayUSA and it says they've been discontinued. Do you guys have a comparable one? It won't let me post the link, but it looks just like a thumb-hole style, but without the piece above the thumb.
Due to traveling my stock sat for almost 3 months between first and second coat. When I applied the second coat and sanded it seemed like I was just pushing the finish around.
On our military stocks we do use Tru-Oil finish, on our traditional stocks we offer a clear satin lacquer as the standard finish, with an option to upgrade to high gloss. Also a lacquer.
I bought a rifle online that came with a Boyd's stock that was supposed to be black/grey but it ended up being black/green. I'm not a fan of the coloration but I don't intend to return it. So is there any way I can do something like bleach out the color and then darken it up again so it comes out black and grey???
I really don't know what the difference would be in the Savage 11 vs. the 11 Hog Hunter. We make stocks for the Savage 11 Bottom Bolt release and the Top Bolt release Rifles. There are quite a few different ones, so look them over and compare the Center to Center measurements on your action screws. Go to the web site and select you make, model, action to see what we all have. if your measurements match, you're good to go. You can always call sales at 605-996-5011.
I cannot find any "refinishing" videos with a gun that has checkering on it ? Most rifles have it, yet no one dares to show how they do it. I wish someone would do one.
what can i use to remove the dye that you put into your stocks? i have a black/grey laminated boyds stock & i want to go a different color. i have three rifles with the same stock.
I may have. I removed my comment as to not confuse anyone else. I was going for a gloss finish which is much harder to do than a satin. Every little finger or brushstroke shows up with a gloss finish. The spray tru-oil wasn't any easier. (low pressure can w/ lots of orange peel) Ended up doing a spray lacquer instead. Turned out fair. Still love the stock design though.
Things have not improved as of February 2018, just as an FYI. They need to add staffing and get people who have a passion in taking care of customers. I hope they want to improve because they have some promise with the product. Are they listening and do they care??

HI Tin Man, We actually offer Custom Laser Checkering. When you narrow your search to the stock you want, click on the custom options available for that stock style to see the laser patterns available. Please call into sales if you have any questions! 605-996-5011 Thanks!
I am extremely upset with you guys right now. I have ordered a gunstock for my BMag. I have no issues with the stock itself but there is no magazine catch. I waited intially about 4-6 weeks for the gunstock, no problem. I then called about the issue and you sent me another trigger guard about a month later. Again, I gave you another call, explained the issue in detail, waited another 3 weeks only to find out they sent me another trigger guard for the 3rd time. Do your stock come with a magazine catch for the Savage B-Mag? The plastic one that comes on the Savage will not just drop on. There has to be a solution. I think I have spoke to the same gal that answers the phone twice and I cannot seem to get a magazine catch for the model stock I purchased. Do you provide a magazine catch for the B-Mag bull barrelled stock?
Pitty the true oil is yellow and damages the colour of the tinted laminates. Like the blue, green, pink and reds. I am so dissapointed in how the trueoil destroyed the look of my Forest Cammo stock. 😫
@bennra26008 kkk Look easy but when u do can be a MESS kkk Buy a new stock or synthetic and SAVE YOUR LUNGS with mess up chemical....STAY IN A SAFE SITE! ...LAZY IS ME!

You are better off sanding and finishing the stock yourself. Boyd"s does an average job at best, and they don't take the time to sand everything smooth. they also failed to check their inletting for fitment. This is a company where you don't get what you pay for.

Laminate will not take the stain as well as walnut. The laminate is already impregnated with dye. We have quite a few color options.

Yes, unless of course you are ordering a Mauser Stock. We do not put a bolt cut in Mausers, this is left to the customer.

that stock is class the grain is beautiful what kind of wood is that?
this finish looks great but wonder how it compares to Spar Varnish, Helmsman spray or brush on and Linseed Oil?
Sorry Don, I really don't know.
Does stain penetrate laminate stocks?
Due to traveling my stock sat for almost 3 months between first and second coat. When I applied the second coat and sanded it seemed like I was just pushing the finish around.
That's a beautiful piece of wood
Does Boyds use true oil on the finished stocks it sells?
hey i have a question.. i was told by a friends that the new boyds stock i got would have to be beded for it to be strong enough to shoot my 8mm
What type of finish does Boyd's use on their finished models? An oil varnish similar to tru-oil or something else?
On our military stocks we do use Tru-Oil finish, on our traditional stocks we offer a clear satin lacquer as the standard finish, with an option to upgrade to high gloss. Also a lacquer.
If i order a stock when it said finished on your website dose that mean is bolt on ready?

What is your take on boiled linseed oil?
@boydsgunstocks thanks for the reply.. but i would like to know do i have to?? i dont want the stock to crack or something because it is not beded....
I know this post is old but how long do you let this cure before final assembly and using ? Thank you for video
There's a lot of variables that go into cure time, but 24 hours is safest.
Thank you ya my stock is looking great following this tutorial@@boydsgunstocks
what do you use for applicate and rhen clean imperfections of the sealer and filler?
Great how to video, thanks.
Hey Mr.Boyd how do you refinish a gun stock that has some checkering. I have a remington speedmaster 552
How do you handling checkering?
Great video but when you call to buy a stock no one never answers or return calls or emails so what good it does?
So, why does an unfinished stock from Boyds cost MORE than a finished one?
DrThunder88
Awsome vdeo!! Thanks for including such detail.
I hope Boyd's would consider making a laminated replacement stock for a Savage M11 Hog Hunter. I would buy one in a New York Minute!
I really don't know what the difference would be in the Savage 11 vs. the 11 Hog Hunter.

It's impossible because they use a colored layers glued togeter
wow. am i glad i ordered a finished stock!
Does anyone know what kind of wood that is?
i live in a leafy piny area and i want a non shiny green tint and a natural wood feel. not any glossy finish
@ChrsGuit Thank you!!!
