    At the age of 16, I found out that I had Lymphoma. My survival rate was less than 10%. After enduring months worth of chemo, I found out I was cancer free. 10 years later, I am healthy and still show no signs of cancer or secondary effects from the chemo. I wished that I had this video back in those days. Nobody really talks about cancer in general, let alone teenage cancer.

    A lot of people think that after surviving cancer, you'll start to live more, and go out there and conquer the world, because heck, you beat cancer. You should be happy and a stronger person they said. What they don't understand are the scars that it left you. The memories of the pain, the fear of going through it again, and the fear that next time you might not survive. The story of the second girl resonated with me so much. Thanks for sharing!

    cancer survivor of ovarian cancer at age 10 here. its a warming feeling to hear the experiences of others who had cancer at a young age, i never talk of it, most people i feel do not - more of a silent secret we all carry that had its piece in molding our character. i too never tell people, even when they see my scars, i think its because i never wanted it to be my identity, being known as the girl who had cancer. its difficult to tell a new person that bc cancer is such a HEAVY negative word, its hard to just let the words "I had cancer" roll out of your mouth nonchalantly, but its a warm feeling to hear the stories of others. I enjoy these. 9 years cancer free 🖤

    • @aniyahjohnson8379
      @aniyahjohnson8379 4 года назад +3

      liz I can relate to this a lot, I had lymphoma when I was 12 and I never really like talking about it, not because I’m ashamed but there’s never a causal way to tell people. And you never know how they’re going to react like I don’t want anyone to treat me different. But I’ve been cancer free for about a year now and over all having cancer had made me a more positive and strong person and if I was given the choice I wouldn’t change the fact that I had cancer.

    • @lizrdblizzrd
      @lizrdblizzrd 4 года назад

      Aniyah F exactly, i don't want to be treated differently or make them feel bad for me because its over, but people naturally do that and you can't just slip in "btw i had cancer" aha but i'm glad you're okay now. I would never change my life journey , having cancer so young gave me a perspective on life people don't understand till they're adults

    As a teen cancer survivor, thank you so much for sharing real stories about getting cancer as teen.❤️ I love when the second girl talks about that life after treatment was harder than treatment itself, because I find that the biggest misconception that cancer muggles (that's what I call people who haven't had cancer haha) have is that when we're cancer free/done treatment we're "all good" and that it's behind us, while the reality is most of us struggle just as much if not more after treatment.

    I never really knew how much I needed this video. Last year at 17, I was diagnosed with stage 3 non-hodgkins lymphoma and It really did kind of take over my life. I had 6 rounds of heavy chemotherapy that lasted each a week long, and to say I spent a lot of time in the hospital was an understatement cause even when I was "home" I still had the medications and the constant check ups from my parents not to mention still having to go back in for labs. But I completely understand the stress from having to go to school and trying to put everything behind you and still have the constant physical memory of the hairloss and the scars to the point where I was off the grid on social media for a while and even skipped my school pictures. Even now as I am more comfortable with myself I still will edit out my scars from pictures, and I know I always had my friends and family but it was always different talking to them because they can only understand so much, so hearing that others went through similar experiences is something I didn't know I really needed to hear.

    A thyroid cancer survivor here too 💪😄. Was initially diagnosed back in my uni days, i juggle between classes and treatment. I remember finishing my mid term examination and went straight for my hemithyroidectomy surgery appointment with my surgeons. I went in for another surgery 2 weeks later and terribly bleed in the OT. My parathyroid just completely fail me and I need to take lifetime calcium supplements in addition to the levothyroxine. Also i wrote my master’s thesis during my RAI 131 session.
    Cancer is terrible, all the medications are terrible, but I’m grateful to live. Life is beautiful 💖

    The fact that cancer can impact someones mental and physical health in such a quick amount of time, and how it can basically happen to anyone even the healthiest people scares me.

    I was diagnosed with undifferentiated sarcoma in my chest when I was 14. I was fortunate to be in the Atlanta area, so I was treated at CHOA and met lots of other teens who had gone through treatment or were going through treatment for lots of kinds of childhood cancers. And then in 2007 I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer as a result of my radiation therapy for my initial cancer. After surgery and therapy, I’ve been cancer free ever since. I’m now a wife and mom of three.
    The one thing that resounds with me deeply is the deep rooted “fear” that cancer is always possible. But also, I’m so grateful for the experience and the relationships that I gained through my experience. I’m so grateful for life and the ability to live it fully. 💛So proud of these girls for speaking candidly.

    cancer is a scary thing; obvious everyone knows about it and is aware of it but your view of it completely changes when you or someone you love goes through it. july 24, 2018 my nana was admitted into the hospital. she had been having seizures for 2 hours straight without anyone knowing. she was put into a medically induced coma and she wasn’t breathing on her own. she was given a 60% chance of coming out of the coma and we found out she had stage 4 kidney cancer. I really thought I had lost her, which was really hard for me considering she’s like my best friend. thankfully she pulled through and went through chemo but it didn’t work for her, she eventually tried a pill which could’ve killed her faster or saved her life, thankfully she’s now cancer free thanks to that miracle pill.
    sorry I felt the need to tell my experience with cancer. I’m so thankful to have her in my life. 💖

With my friends I try to keep the conversation light, & I use humor as a coping mechanism & that shocks people at first but it's the only way I can get through my day. Whenever people around me react with pitty it kind of brings me back to being diagnosed, so PLEASE! Don't ever do that. Cancer affects each one of us differently, and not completely negatively.
    For me, I'm in med school & just had my last chemo. I pushed through treatment and started medical school because I thought it would keep me occupied and my mind off of it, but that's impossible. Now it's trying to figure out how to live, without the constant fear of dying. How do I take everything I learned in my cancer journey, and reflect that in my day-to-day life? How do I fight the urge to jump on a plane & travel the world, when every day feels like my last? I don't know yet.

    I was diagnosed with Leukemia when I was 16 - during the middle of my junior year of high school. Ended up losing part of one of my lungs and almost dying to a fungal infection while on chemo. I’m 20 now and have been cancer free for about 2 years now but I can really relate to the second girl. Life after cancer isn’t easy. You aren’t the same person as you were. Before treatment I had finally begun being happy with my body and lifting weight and breaking out of my shell and watching all that hard work with away, your social life and all the progress I made gone from chemo it really affected me. Seeing her talk about her positive outlook on life and how she overcame a lot of it gives me hope ❤️ Even though it’s rough going, I wouldn’t change a thing and I feel like I‘be matured and have a different outlook on life now. Never take the small things for granted. Appreciate all you have and love life to its fullest :) You never know when you won’t be able to anymore

    I guess I’m still just in a bad place in my head about it now. I had soft tissue cancer (alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma in my face and neck) and while I was battling it kept high spirits for the most part. Yeah chemo sucked and radiation literally left me with an open wound on my neck that they had to keep radiating for 3 weeks after it formed, but when I had the by-weeks when I was off treatment I was happy. Now that I’m almost 3 years in remission (17 now) I find myself getting more and more angry about the fact that I had cancer. It hurts to know that your body literally betrayed you for no reason and essentially tried to kill you. In a way it made me a better person and made me value life. On good day (which are most days) I even make cancer jokes and allow those close to make cracks about it as well, but sometimes there will just be the smallest thing that can trigger an hour long sobbing session. I was at the movies and there was a preview for this new movie about a Chinese grandmother with cancer and it was just about celebrating her life and I almost broke down in the theatre. I now think of my life in two parts: before and after cancer and feel a large disconnect to the 13 of my life prior to having cancer. It doesn’t feel like me anymore. I don’t know just venting. I should probably get a therapist but am afraid to share with an actual person what’s going on in my head. At least I’m not crying while typing this out though. Let me know if any of you guys feel the same.

    • @whychoooseausername4763

      It's actually very common to develop depression in the first months or years of remission. I can't tell you why it happens, I just know I've seen it in survivors of all ages. Try to consult a therapist or two, you can ask if they have previous experience with this on the phone.
      You're not alone, you're not abnormal. You're a wonderful young person who deserves help and love. And please be kind to yourself.

    I was 18 when I was diagnosed with T-Lymphoblastic Lymphoma in the thyroid. I went through two surgeries. They removed my entire thyroid including my isthmus. I lost my voice. After that they did lots of tests and scans and I even went through Bone Marrow Aspiration which was so painful. My doctors were actually kind of troubled because it was their first time to face such a case. September last year, I got admitted in the hospital to start my induction chemotherapy which was specifically an ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) Regimen. But after five days, they sent me home and didn't continue the treatment. On October I finally got a call and they said they would proceed the chemo but they will use a different type of Chemo. I had 6 cycles of CHOP chemotherapy and just finished it last Tuesday. I still remember clearly, how much I had been crying when I left the chemo room and went to see my mom. I just cried and cried and told her, "Thank God mom, it's finally over." To be honest, I got more scared at the treatment than the cancer itself. After my first cycle of chemotherapy, my whole body just dropped and I couldn't talk, I couldn't eat, I couldn't move. Everything felt bad, and painful and uncomfortable.I experienced neuropathy and heart problems. Then I lost my hair. It was like as if I couldn't recognize my own body anymore. And one of the scariest things that it brought to me was how much the chemo had affected my mental health. Every time I would have my chemo, it would feel like as if I was loosing my mind and I really couldn't explain it. It was so scary. I didn't say anything to my parents but I was really so scared. I couldn't sleep. I wanted so bad to have someone to talk to. I wanted someone who was going to listen to me because I needed so bad to release the anxiety, the fear, the pain and the sadness in my heart. But unfortunately, my friends were busy in their college life. They would try to reach out sometimes but in rare occasions. And even at the hospital, there wasn't really a teen or someone my age whom I could talk to or share my thoughts and experiences with. I was always the youngest. I started to develop a trauma of hospitals. Everytime I go to the hospital or see a hospital, I got so scared. All I could do everytime I went for my treatment was close my eyes, pray, stop myself from crying and hop that it would be over soon. Often times, I would ask myself, "When will all of these be over? Will I even survive? Will I still be able to go to college and live a normal life like other teens out there?" I had fear, worry and doubt. But I didn't want to give up. Even if I cried almost every day and night. Even if it was so hard. I tried my best to keep pushing and fighting and the only really weapon I had was my faith in God that by what Jesus did on the cross of Calvary, I was healed. He's my only hope. And now that I finally finished my treatment I just really can't help but cry in joy and thanksgiving to the Lord because I was able to overcome my treatment which was the hardest and scariest part. By His grace, I am still here.

    Last summer i was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the age of 25, it has been 11 months since my surgery, and a month since i'm in remission. I don't have a thryoid anymore, i have to take meds for the rest my entire life to substitute the thyroid's functions. The most painful thing about thyroid cancer is that not only it's cancer which sucks big time, but even after we're in remission, we are still stuck with a chronic disease because we don't have a thyroid so no more thyroid hormones (which are responsible for having a stable heart rate, brain function, digestion, stable mental health, thermoregulation... basically every vital function). We have to take meds every day or else we die, and it takes so long to adjust the dosage... Anyhow, Rock on to every Thyroid cancer survivor !

    I had the same cancer as athlete girl. I had osteosarcoma of the left proximal tibia at the age of 12, it then metastasized to my left lung when I was 15 (I’m now in my 40’s). I did limb salvage surgery which at the time was experimental and my scar now is outrageous.
    I’m wonder if anyone else feels like they are not survivors of cancer but actually survivors of the medical field and feel like they actually ruin lives and are not there to cure or help anyone? I have learned that all the things I went through as a kid I didn’t need to go through if I changed my diet. The medical field will never promote that since your can’t patten alkaline natural foods. I’m not looking for any hateful comments, I just want to know if anyone out there feels similar. Thanks
