This might be the greatest SP song ever.....I bet I’ve listened to the Singles Soundtrack 4000 times. What a great mix of tunes. Great choice today sir...
I bought pearl Jam vitalogy way back when. I opened the cd, disc had the Vitalogy black and yellow logo. Played it and it ended up being a misprint and it was the Singles soundtrack. I never returned it. Still have it in my vehicle. Amazing
I still own the dvd. I actually watched it the other day. What a great cast! I have been fortunate to see Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins and Soundgarden. I too listened to that soundtrack many, many times. One of the best! "I was nowhere near your neighbourhood".
A lot of jewels in that soundtrack for sure. I discovered this song via singles as well and I think I agree about it being the best SP song. To me it sets the tone of the feel of the 90s grunge sound. Kind of melancholy as Billy Corgan would say.
Haha "The fifth best thing about playing guitar" really captures how much I smile anytime I can play a big D chord in drop D! Thanks for another amazing lesson on a fun song
Awesome lesson! I appreciate your demeanor, in that you don't imply that if a player can't play it exactly like the original, then they suck. I'm a big fan of putting my own stamp on the music I play.
I just discovered your YT channel tonight. Thanks for posting all of these. I've been half-a$$ing most of these 90's songs for 20+ years, so really appreciate the easy to understand instructions(I'm just a campfire hack). I've probably been playing this song on my Baby Taylor 3 times a day for the past 20 years trying to learn it.....
Hi Ryan! Merry Christmas! One of my favorite songs, movie and amazing lesson. I almost have this nailed. Thank you so much for your humorous lessons and letting all guitar players into your life. Peace and Love! Have an amazing holiday! ❄
Dude you’re a fantastic guitar instructor. Very funny, not annoying, very straightforward Also hey I’m pretty sure I have that same maroon guitar in the back on the right
There are tons of lessons for Landslide by Fleetwood Mac but almost nothing for the Smashing Pumpkins version. Any chance you’d do a lesson on that? As great as Lindsey Buckingham is, I always preferred Billy’s version. Thanks!
Hey Ryan, great lesson on one of my favorite SP tunes! I just wanted to add one thing that I figured out by messing around and a seemingly accurate tab online had it the same way. There's a slight bend on the 9th fret d string at the end of that part at 5:30 before it goes back into the main riff.
Thanks for all you do man! Appreciate the time you donate to us in teaching good tunes! Going to PJ at Fenway, Night 1,2. Hope to bump into you if you make it outthis way
Pitches are correct but Bill does not use the fingering. He is in ninth position. He starts with his ring finger on the C# (11th fret) and then uses his first finger to play the note E, (9th fret of the D string).
It took a while but I think I finally got it down. Great song, great lesson! Thanks again Ryan. Remember when Chris Cornell blew out the car widows with the speakers in Singles.😂✌
Can you please make a super simplified breakdown for beginners? I’m getting the main parts but I don’t understand a lot of the guitar lingo, you’re awesome I would super appreciate it!!!
Great question! I used the Neck/Middle position on my 5 position switch... a little less "strat-y" than the neck pickup but a little rounder than the middle one... with the amp gain set so it just breaks up a bit with a moderate strum... but as for the specific pickups, my good friend put these in this guitar and I haven't the foggiest what kind they are - I just know he said they were great and it was a brand I had never heard of. They definitely have a little more push than usual strat pickups, and make no attempt at not humming
Great lesson! Plz do more Pumpkins vids. The guy who had the most SP lessons just deleterd his acct. In particular, theres no lessons on YTube for “Soma”. That wud be great if u cud do that one
@@RyanLendt For everyone's reference, here is a good example: ruclips.net/video/u7OmBykf_cE/видео.html He plays the "G String 9th fret with open D String".
Cool! I love The different bands songs you’re teaching. I say teach a classic rock song from like the 70s or 80s. I trust your taste, you pick the song. I’m just along for the ride on this awesome wave. That is your RUclips channel.
Cool! I was thnking about this. So I thought of the one of the worst band in the world and one of the the worst guitar player in the world(enter sarcastic emoji) lol. So I thought of The Beatles and Eric Clapton. How about My guitar Gently weeps? Is that cool?
To replicate that nice “bell tone”, I use a Blue Lace Sensor for the neck pickup in a ‘77 Strat. To me, it sounds better than a Red Lace Sensor in the bridge location for this song. The V4 Op Amp big muff doesn’t have true bypass, so there’s a slight distorted sound even when it’s clean, so Billy attacks the strings to get it to distort ever so slightly. Run it through a nice clean amp like a JCM 800 with KT88 tubes for example, and let the pedal give you the needed tone. Also, if anyone wants an accurate transcript of the song, I’d suggest getting this book. www.amazon.com/Smashing-Pumpkins-Anthology-Recorded-Version/dp/0634079557/ref=mp_s_a_1_11?keywords=Smashing+Pumpkins&qid=1583865162&s=books&sr=1-11 I’m actually on here looking for someone who has all of the bass lines figured out. I have most of it figured out already, but I was hoping a bassist already has it nailed down somewhere???
I agree on the blue lace sensor except I also use the silver so in-between spot. I also don't use drop-d on this song. I hear a couple notes that are in different songs space but I hear the song way better my way.
@@sparkyguitar0058 definitely! Yeah, I use that combo too, I believe it’s “selection 2” which is the spot between the neck and middle pickup like you were saying. I most definitely use drop D tuning on Drown, I was watching how he plays it with his recovered Gish strat. It’s dead on to my ear, I have a sample recording I did that I need to upload on RUclips. I do have a post on Reddit you can check out. It has Today and Cherub Rock with photos of some of my gear. The intro for Today uses the same pickup position as Drown. But my posted version of Cherub Rock uses the red lace sensor pickup, it would sound way better if I re-recorded it using position 2 as well. www.reddit.com/r/SmashingPumpkins/comments/mnc04j/my_pumpkins_replication_factory/?
