I'm 75 and in my entire life have only bought one new car, I work on my own budget which began at £500 per annum and is currently £2000 per annum. Those costs include servicing, parts insurance and tax, but exclude fuel, luckily I'm fairly competent mechanically. I either buy 3 year old low mileage cars or more usually older cars up to 6 years, I've always kept 3 cars between me and the wife. Keeping 3 cheap cars means if one needs repairs or maintenance we both still have a car. Every car is run until scrapped, or considered economically unviable. I thoroughly research engines and gearboxes for reliability before purchase and only buy those I have confidence in. I'm absolutely never going to be viewed as a millionaire or drug dealer driving around, but do I care, no I don't, my money stays in the bank. Example, last car bought was 5 year old small 5 door 1.6 petrol from a dealer with 21,000 miles for £9000, I was offered a no quibble warranty covering everything for 3 years for £800. For the first time, because of my age I took it, like buying a new car??, tax was around £130, insurance (yes I'm old) £300 and annual service around £250. If I live long enough this car should last another 15 years, So £9800, plus annual costs (which will rise) averaging say £1200 during that period gives 9800 + 1800 divided by 15 gives costs per annum of £1850, leaving me £2,250 to spend on extras out of my £2000 budget. This has worked up to now, but is a risky business as major repairs/accidents/changes in laws could wipe this out, I've been lucky
I've bought the very last new car for me 4 years ago, a #SuzukiVitara auto, 7 year warranty, I'm fed up with all this battery Eco stuff to , so hopefully it will see me out.
Just making a point on Road Tax... doesn't affect me... but millions of the hard-working people of this country. That's my point. If you can only afford the £600 Toyota, you'll have to find another £400 for road tax. That's a lot. Thanks for watching
I bought a Mitsubishi Shogun 3.2td lwb. £435 in road tax per annum and £450 fully comp insurance. Now the government is talking about introducing a Pay per mile charge!! Time people woke up and started to protest. It's getting ridiculous..
@@WoolyChewbakker The plan is your to download a government app on your phone that will record your milage etc. Refusal or I forgot my phone would result in an automatic 3 point's. It's all to do with tracking your every move. Plus it lets them see if you need a fossil burning vehicle or if an electric car would be a better solution if you do very little milage. It's all about control... I read this in an EU mandate being proposed.. Sadiq Khan is all for it..
@@johnlaw4513 I don't understand the taxation on these shoguns. They all have the same engine but some are £190 some are £435 and others are £710 ??? Mines £435. Thinking of selling it for a Hyundai Santa Fe. Same horse power and torque as the shogun giving 10-15 mpg more and obviously a better more comfortable drive. See what happens in the new year 👍👍
I just did a quote online for that particular blue Range Rover and fully comp with my partner as a named driver of just over £666 with a £1,250 excess which seems very reasonable.
@@ChrisEdworthyyou are obviously a much higher risk, I have a Subaru Legacy, £144 to insure FC & a Suzuki GSXR1000 £79 to insure TPFT, a huge affect on insurance price is when you want the policy to start! To buy a policy starting tomorrow is much more expensive than buying one to start in 3 weeks time.
@chrisdickens4268 the government, it doesn't how.many cars he has , he can only drive one at a time!. In a other countries it's the person who has a registration, so it's fairer.
My 2005 Range Rover Sport....£975 insurance £360 tax 28mpg 140,000 miles changed timing belts front and rear and replacement cross flow head, £1300 no debt it's luxurious I love it
I recently got rid of my Discovery 3 due to the high road tax, I got rid of it before the election, the road tax was £735 a year, my car had 130,000 miles on the clock, the space was amazing, the fuel economy was brilliant at an average of around 30 miles per gallon, towing capability was faultless for towing my friends boat, I loved that car, it soaked up the potholes with ease, I also liked the automatic transmission, the insurance was reasonable by todays standards at £475 a year, but the road tax? I just couldn't justify the cost which was a shame This government are anti motorist, when they introduce pay per mile, plus fuel duty, plus road tax, are the working class people going to be able to afford to go back and forth to work or are we going to become Americanised and have to live in our vehicles for the working week? and are the government then going to tax us for doing that? are they going to tax us for just owning a vehicle? Labour HATE the working class people, they regard us lower than murderers or pedophiles, they hate the motorists, they are regarded as pond life, if I didn't work 30 miles away from home, I wouldn't drive, but I can't afford to move and where I live, 90% of us have at least a 20 mile journey to work as there's not much in the way of employment in the town, perhaps the Labour government wants to get rid of the working class scum from the UK and just have politicians, bankers, solicitors and managers in the country as they are what keeps the country going? Who knows, but they certainly don't want us here
Well said. Labour will bring higher tax lower investment by companies... leading to less jobs, less money for the average man to live on...let alone have the odd luxury of a car. What have we become! Labour hot in with less votes than the last time they lost... only about 1/3 of people voted for them. Not exactly what the whole country wanted! Thanks for watching.
@@ChrisEdworthy sadly, I don't think anyone is capable of pulling us out of this mess, the greed of the millionaires that we've allowed to run this country, they don't care, they can afford whatever they want whenever they want, if the country goes too far downhill, they'll just pack their bags, up sticks and move to another country and start a new life, after all, they won't have to get a mortgage, they have more than enough money to cover their costs. I contemplated leaving the country, I should have made the move sooner, I'm too old and don't have enough funding behind me, I know it sounds bad to say, but I'm glad I'm nearer the end of my life because the last few decades this country has really gone downhill rapidly
Oh ho, bit of a giveaway there when you say this government.......cos as sure as **** I didn't notice the one running the place making car tax any cheaper....I got my Allroad in summer '18 and I've been paying through the nose for road tax ever since. So you lot can just take your brexshit anti labour gobshytecand shove it you know where until you've done a little bit of reading and research.
@@chucky2316 only if they're electric, and then they can screw us with the rising cost of electricity and pay per mile taxes......... Starmer screws again
Got a 2007 4.2 Supercharged. 250k miles on the clock but drives like new. Had it for nearly 4 years. Cost about £2,500 in bills. Bought the car for £2,700. Insurance about 400. I don't do a great deal of miles. Thing is, I'm not in debt with a finance company and it seems fairly cheap to run to me for a very luxurios and comfortable car.
If it broke though alan could you afford to repair it what about the tyres do you put brand new or part worns on it. You see so many floating about in old ones who couldn't afford them when new and when they break so does their bank balance
@@chucky2316 Yes, you're right. That's a sort of cashflow thing I guess. Providing you can get hold the money to fix it when needed, it isn't a problem and you can probably save money in the long run. I do know what it's like to run out of money before the end of the month and if your car fails an MOT = nightmare! Over the last four years, so far it hasn't been that expensive to run - about 2x HP payments per year!
I was talking to someone last week who told me about his wife's work colleague who has a four year PCP deal on an new X5 (a nothing car in my opinion). He pays a staggering £900 per month for the 'privilege' of having this thing; £43200 over 4 years for a car that he will NEVER own, and that's excluding the deposit! It makes owning the RR in this video look palatable. And Chris, you do realise that the RAV's headlights are easily restorable right? No need to replace them..
I just don't get people at times why have something you really can't afford just to keep up with the jones and have pretence 900 odd a month for a bmw is madness tbh I bet it's obsolete model aswell 😂
Another option is to get a daily classic car or two.. No road tax, no MOT and super cheap insurance. Cheapest quote for my 2011 L322 was £900 but my Silver Shadow was £150 fully comp including breakdown cover. Obviously the MPG is higher but it is ULEZ compliant and drives amazingly.
Part of it is that this may only be worth - say - £5000 today, but it's still a £100,000 car with associated costs. And the reason that happens is that choosing a car like this sends the very clear message that you're willing to lavish money on motors, so everyone turns up for their bit. Most of it, from tyres to insurance, costs very little more to produce but they know you'll pay. Take it or leave it. It's up to you to decide if you get more value out of the RR over a Toyota, or out of whatever else you could spend the money on
@@ChrisEdworthy I think there is a slight perceptual filter with cars - even fairly large sums are spent more easily on them than virtually anything else. They're an indulgence which has the virtue of also providing utility.
Had a engine management light on for 3 years. But intermittent. Did 2000 miles tour from Wales to Kent to Lincolnshire , to Scotland and back to Wales . Its 8 year old Berlingo, I bought it 3 years old ex mobility low mileage car. Decided to keep it as wife now uses a mobility scooter. Bought the Berlingo as I was an active electrician and ideal for my tools etc. now retired. Main dealer ignored the management light, the front when questioned was. Well it's not giving any trouble is it. So it was left. MOT passed every time. Just done another 600 miles to Kent and back visiting family. 82K on the clock now, 1600 diesel semi auto. Thanks for your detailed info. , it's all worrying I find. Now 77. So may not be driving much longer. I use to do 50k a year in the electrical repairs industry. If we both stop driving, then our life style will be totally upset as we would never see any family again. Trains are not practical, bus services been reduced, I walk a lot, as I am very agile still. Why we moved to Wales. Best wishes good luck.
Berlingo's are solid engines from what I've heard. I'm sure giving up driving would be tough. I wish you all the best and many more years of motoring. Thanks for watching.
I think you already know the answer, Chris: keep the Range Rover and check out what other RUclips channels have created for videos, then copy the winners. And ask GPT for content ideas. Good luck with your channel!
It's madness over there they get taxed per bin bag aswell😂 irish govt know how to ring them dry. I remember the good old days nobody taxed their car etc. Kieran in devon
They are as bad as people make out. All brands have issues. My RR hasn't caused any issues other than servicing. That's the thing, they need to be maintained and they can be great cars. Forget the maintenance and you have problem. Thanks for watching.
I totally understand that. The little Rav4 I have used quite a but. Cheaper to run, easy to park and don't care about it if it gets scratched. Thanks for watching.
£500 a year to insure my 09 3.6TDV8 Westminster, the £735 a year tax isn’t great! But I can’t complain as I absolutely love my L322! Any other car simple can’t compete!
I used to have a Mazda RX8 got rid of it last year that was £750 for road tax my insurance for my Toyota 80 series land cruiser has gone up to £3000 (up by £700) with 8 years no claims they’re definitely taking the mickey out of us trying to price people off the roads..
@@ChrisEdworthy yeah they’ve all doubled their profits, Mark McCann (another British RUclipsr) has done some investigating into the insurance companies ripping people off and they’ve all literally doubled their profits ripping the British public off.. they’ll continue to do so unless people start calling them out as by law they’re supposed to offer a fair price & not fleece you..
Ouch! That insurance is mad! Just renewed mine for my 2012 L322 was £1100 inc agreed valuation, 5k miles per year. Thought was ok. Interestingly trying to sell mine atm after 3 and half years of enjoying it. Why not have 2 L322s on the channel 😂...Rav4 is great little car, could be a fun series, wonder if you could get a Jimney for £700!! Good luck with the channel 👍
Thanks for your comments... a Jimny would be a good idea. The Rav makes for a good little run-a-round. Although I wasn't planning on having a Rav. Thanks for watching.
Road tax & insurance on the Range Rover is iniquitous, there's no doubt about that. ...if you don't have to get rid, then don't - if you do decide to, do it now whilst it looks good and is fault free - somebody will be pleased to own what is after all a good looking machine in a great colour ! You could use the Rav to fiddle about with for the channel, or try and find a reasonably priced series land rover to do stuff with (which might be the better option) but keep the Rav as a runabout.
Hi Chris, the tax on the Range Rover is an abomination. I’d hate to be forced into getting shot of it, but paying Circa £400 per month for insurance is sickening. It isn’t worth it in my opinion. As much as it would piss me off to do it I think I’d offload it rapid. Good luck with whatever decision you arrive at.
Morning Chris I totally have the same issue with tax on my 62 plate Discovery 4 back in the day yuppies drove them in London hence they got taxed for it!!! Shame as I love my 7 seater Discovery 4 best vehicle for long trips like we do Essex to Cornwall 6 times a year.
It's a real shame. As they age I think they should be taxed less. Government get extra tax for them being less efficient, from both ULEZ and fuel... the more they guzzle the more tax we pay. Crazy really! Thanks for watching.
£735 now to road tax (VED) my 2008 L320 TDV8 Range Rover Sport (ouch!). Fortunately my insurance is only £200 (6000 miles per year and I stay in a quiet area). I have owned it for 8 years now and it has only covered 89k miles. I have been debating whether I should keep it or not too - the VED is a crazy number and will likely increase. I really enjoy driving Range Rovers - options are to accept the costs and upgrade to a newer L322 for the comfort (more comfortable than the L320) , hold on to the L320 or change to another vehicle with less cost of ownership. Glad to see I'm not alone in the debate 🙂
It’s a touch one, as they become less valuable, it’s how much do you pay just to drive it. It’s not as if it’s a precious classic… yet! Thanks for watching.
I had a similar dilema. I wanted a newer jeep ( to replace a 98) and the ones i was looking at were in that £700 tax bracket. I went full on old and bought a 62 year old landrover😂😂 Its been my daily for 18 months. A bit barmy, but great fun, and cheap to run....
Don't push the RAV through the corners, they breakaway (snap) without much warning and then your main struggle will be keeping it upright. Been there, got the T-shirt ;-)
Ive had a 2007 jeep cherokee kj 2.8crd for 7 years.. Road tax is £680/year. Just had insurance renewal of £400. Thats gone up by nearly £200 in last 2 years but still (i think) compared to your RR pretty dam good. Its mint condition with 6 speed box & is lovely to drive. On a run if you keep to 70mph it does 47 mph! Yes, this is true & i worked it out manually. Its never let me down & in the winter & living on the snowline in devon its really worth it. Yes, it pisses me off paying such high road tax bearing in mind how good it is on fuel but, we know its politics driven road tax pricing. All 4x4s got the Chelsea tractor tax hike several years ago. 1 side note which shocked me when i found out. London taxis had the same VM diesel engine for many years. Not ideal for cities. I have thought about selling it but due to all the eco city orientated poltical crap. its worth bugger all these days. Maybe, I'll sorn it during summer months. Keep it garaged & just use in the winter.
So let me see you drive a Range Rover and a Rolls Royce , if you can’t afford the road tax and insurance then the solution is simple have cars you can afford 🤷🏻♂️…
It's not all about me. The £600 Rav4 is £400+ in road tax. If you can't afford a newer car you're punished by buying a secondhand car. I was driving a Tesla Model S before the Range Rover. Zero road tax. I am fortunate to have choice. But its still too much money to run an old car.
£4k for insurance, just ridiculous no one is going to nick a RR on a 62 plate, the crims want ones a couple of years old to send to Russia or Africa. It makes the car valueless TBH. I am sticking with my Rover 75 which was £440 last year. I wanted a Porsche Cayanne but the insurance now worries me! Apparently we are all subsidizing EV's which can't be fixed with minor accidents and are written off.
Why didn’t you include the insurance and fuel efficiency as a total lump sum. Get a better car and lower insurance fuel consumption. By year two you’d be quids in, while keeping to the same budget?
ditch the RR (Range Rover! - they’re pointless, dull, everyone despises them, and the running costs are absurd for an old car like that) and keep the Rolls (or chop it for a classic Roller) and see how the Rav4 works out!
That's a good idea. The Rav is going surprisingly well. Amazing really. Its needs a service and a couple of repairs. I'll do those and see what I should do with it. Thanks for watching.
I have just retired and my insurance on the same car is around £450 per annum. Your quote is just silly, ridiculous even. Im sure you can do much better than that. The 405's, the later model is the thief magnet which can attract big insurance premiums, obviously dependent on where you live; London , Manchester etc. I live in a quiet country village and not parked on the road, so the best option as far as the insurance companies are concerned.
I agree mostly what you’re saying but it also depends wear you live and use case. I only pay 900 insurance 415rtax for 2017 4.4sdv8 rangy witch i love having owned 3 l322. I’ve owned other brands even so call reliable brands - cars but had more issues with those. Don’t get me Wong rangys do have some issues to keep an eye on like my one needs the oil cooler seals replacing witch ill be doing this weekend. But its a large luxury 4x4 not basic corsa. And there not built as cheap run arounds even if ther value has dropped, also you don’t skimp on them or you will be punished eg will cost you more.
My Range Rover has been great, very reliable. But the insurance and tax combined is getting on for half the value of the car. Nothing to do with maintenance. I don't mind maintaining the car!!
Hk Chris you could tidy up the rav and double your money and pay for the tax on the range rover also shop around for your insurance try top cashback as I only pay just over £300 for mine but I live in north Wales
That's an amazing price for insurance. Trouble is I do about 20k miles a year and need business use to be properly coverted so it starts to get expensive. Thanks for watching.
Road tax in the UK is way cheaper than many other countries. Insurance is not related to gov tax policy. I’m paying £2.5k a year for my L322 in london + ULEZ - that’s the price for the privilege of driving the best car in the world. If I wanted to drive a cheap car I would but that’s my choice.
Oh no! That’s awful news, gosh Chris perhaps you ought to suck it up and pay your share. You choose to have a couple of luxurious cars. Try spending some of that cash on a couple of more mundane yet cheap to own cars, that’s what everyone else does.
great video, some great points made also, at some point as you say the government will need to gain tax from EV's since they are pushing everyone to buy them. I run a Jaguar xf 2016 2.2 diesel, and as many others have said you only live once so drive the car that puts a smile on your face and not one that pleases the government or do gooders. You won' t get the same warm feeling from the Toyota, keep the Range Rover and enjoy it sell the Rav and be pleased you made some very valid and well thought out points. People will soon tire of the character-less electric same shape battery rip of vehicles, no way I'll ever give up my Jaguar!!!
I wouldn't mind a Jag too. But I think you're right. The Rav is a little boring. I love driving the RR... think I'll continue with it. Thanks for your comments.
Tbh hounest mate i live in rural devon and if i was in the market for a 4x4 i would use the farmers as a bench mark, as they 1 dont like to throw away money and are smart, and b have veichles that are reliable you rarely see range rovers unless its people with a few quid. Toyota hilux and the izuzu seem to be the workhorses and a fair few jimnys knocking about. The old school defender was king and the daihatsu four tracks were popular a few years back. You still see the odd old school defender kicking about here.
A lot of farmers have left Land Rover for Toyota and Izuzu. I totally get that. I just love the old Range Rover. Would be sad to part with her. Thanks for watching.
Yeah but tax aside the RR is a great drive and has a lot of prestige. The road tax is nothing when you consider how much you can get an old RR for compaired to a new one.
Spot on. The car tax is an absolute joke for this car. The govt should be utterly ashamed of themselves. They have created an awful system. And classic cars are suffering as a result. As if you can buy a car that pays zero car tax, despite it using the roads, should be a low rate of 50 a year, which would recoup something.
Not just RR it’s all cars of March 2006-9/10. A beetle VED was £385, Mx5 same and many other cars under £2k purchase price now. I had to sell two 2006/8 mercs last year as the ved was £615 and going up, p/xd for 6k and 7k. Pre 2006 not so bad and new cars £180. It’s mad and distorting the market.
Yep I’m loving my old boring from new Toyota Yaris 2009 £30 year tax and £220.00 insurance fully protected yep and spending money on lots of other stuff 😊
Maybe you're paying a lot of road tax because your cars are much heavier than normal cars and are damaging the roads more. And if you can't afford to have three cars, why don't you sell one. Or make more money so you can afford them?
I know someone who's paying almost £20k for 2 RR in London. It's a toss-up between high insurance or take the hit in depreciation. Thanks for watching.
A fact check is required here. There is no Road Fund tax in the UK and there hasn't been since the 1930's. After 1936 road maintenance has been paid for out of general taxation It is now the Vehicle Excise Duty, and has been a general tax on owning a vehicle since 1936.
@@ChrisEdworthy fortunately here in France you only pay the penalty when you buy a new car. After that all cars are equal. Grahame. Vehicle Excise Duty is based on impact on the environment, the perceived ability of the owners to pay. If you want to drive an L322 Range Rover you have no choice but to pay the standing costs or to sell the RR. Having said that the insurance is excessive at £4,000, presume that is fully comp, agreed value and unlimited mileage.
How much to tax and insure the Toyota? Far more are able to purchase and run the Toyota than the RangeRover! I'd run the Toyota and be far less stressed.
Road tax "used to repair and build roads" , was abolished in the 1920s, today the tax is VED vehicle emissions duty, based on exhaust Co2 from the tailpipe, the Range Rover has a very high Co2 hence the high figure. Insurance, Range Rovers are a high-risk car for theft , 1 in 100 are stolen and not recovered every year, Insurance companies do not want them on their books, sorry but no sympathy here.
I've had a Mondeo and a Custom. Great cars. I found the dealership servicing to be awful. A real shame. I love the brand, but they need to work on customer experience on aftersales. Thanks for watching
Says the man stood next to a Land Rover, if I'm not mistaken. Very small picture to go on! The little Toyota has been reliable and quite good fun to drive. Thanks for watching.
Tooth paste and a cloth should bring the lights back to normal. It’s a disgrace what this government plans for us. Totally out of touch. My daughter had a Rav 4 for years and it is a great little car.
As much as i disagree with the £710 roadtax on ya long since bought Range Rover that older Rav4 is still £415 a year, id just pay the extra iam afraid.
This will be a debate many people will be having. We love cars and enjoy the the experience they give but more recently the costs are too high and unless you really need that car or love that car its not worth the cost. Keep it if it give you pleasure and you can afford it, or if its just transport you meed then keep the cheaper car... Sense over lust and desires...lol
Range Rovers and similar sized huge vehicles are not practical nor necessary for town and city roads and especially not as fashion wagons for mums doing school runs! In part the high road tax is to discourage this! But the gov should allow lower road tax for farmers and remote country living.
Do you really need a 4x4 mate. I have a 14 plate titan x buisness edition 2.0 litre diesel ford mondeo lovely big comfy car and only 35 quid a year to tax 😂. Loads of cars from thst era are also low tax. Okay its not ulez compliant but i have no intention of ever going to london so 🤷 its not a issue for me.
I drive down some very tight Country lanes. I used to have a Mondeo. In winter it used to get abused. I like a little remote so having something that can plough over the verges and pot holes does help.
Dump it. Cheaper to sell it cheap than to tax and insure it for a year. Unless you are a farmer that tows 3.5 tons and has lots of unmettaled tractor tracks and fields, so you can exempt it for ag use only, meaning no more MOT or road tax and run it legally on cherry, dump it on such a farmer whowill run it until a big repair bill will send it to the scrap man
@@ChrisEdworthy Yes burn a few million so you can run an exempt vehicle on farm roads and no further than around 10 miles a week between your own parcels of land via public roads.
Siimple advise don't buy a car to show off seems you have a few quid if you want to drive a range rover you have to pay for it You also forget range rover driver should pay for Luton airport
You choose to drive a heavy low mpg tank, to which they're not exactly known to be the most reliable vehicles and model dependant highly (and easily) sought after by thieving gits. Apart from that, I agree can't see the issue 😂
Sorry but a choice of paying over £700 on Road Tax for the Range Rover and £415 on Tax for the Rav 4 means you should of really only had a Max £300 budget. Over £400 a year tax on that old Toyota is more of a rip off than the Range Rover Tax. Man math at its best 😊 £415 Road Tax on a car worth only £600 😂
That's my point a 12 year old car isn't for show... it's an old car. £700 tax for a £7000 car... that's 10% of the value... could be an old Toyota with a big engine. It's not showing off, it's a large amount of tax on an old car. If you want a new Range Rover then fine. £150k car £700 tax, seems fair enough.
Why do You think You should be able to Run a Car Cheap ?Nothing is Cheap in this Country Now! We need to rethink things. Lower taxes, and opportunities for people to succeed. Small government, so we don't need to raise taxes to pay for their inefficiency.
I don’t think many people are all that sympathetic to this rather long winded and dull video challenge. In the real world your insurance is a families annual travel budget including buying a car. Sell the RR, add the tax, petrol and insurance and then demonstration what better motoring you could have as a daily runner. That’d at least be something more relevant to YT viewers. Save you the bother… You’d run a nice Kia Sorento for that money and year two it’d be 20% of the cost.. done.

If you can afford to keep the Range Rover and you want the image / comfort / personal gratification it brings then pay the £100 a week in standing costs. Yes your Toyota is a cheap car but still needs insurance and £300+ a year in road tax - every year! OK you could buy a newer Range Rover in the £190 tax band for well under £20k but the insurance would likely be higher and its a capital chunk to lay out. I've noticed that motoring channels on Ytube seem to do well subscriber wise with cars like the Rav. They break the 'Must have a new / Image conscious car mould" and can be run for next to nothing. A kind of middle finger salute to the system. So what do you want to do? and why?
I was just amazed I could buy a whole car for less than the road tax... at what point does the government price a car off the road? The Toyota was bought as a demonstration of what the tax actually looks like. But its turned out to be quite a nice little runner. Really not sure as to what to do with it.
I have a 2011 RRS SC. Love the car, owned quite a while now. No problems what so ever. Road tax is a joke. But for what its worth I will wait for it to go bang and bin it. No car is as comfy for me, and ive tried a few.... keep your RR you will regret it if you sell it.
My little Rav4 is over £400 Road tax. Road tax for the rich with EVs or £100k new cars doesn't really affect them. It's another tax targeting the average working person who can't afford a new car in the first place.
I think buying older car is a better thing to do in some ways. It is risky, but 3 cars you can enjoy sounds like a good option. Thanks for watching
I've bought the very last new car for me 4 years ago, a #SuzukiVitara auto, 7 year warranty, I'm fed up with all this battery Eco stuff to , so hopefully it will see me out.

Great choice. Best way to do motoring I think.
I just couldn't justify the cost which was a shame
This government are anti motorist, when they introduce pay per mile, plus fuel duty, plus road tax, are the working class people going to be able to afford to go back and forth to work or are we going to become Americanised and have to live in our vehicles for the working week? and are the government then going to tax us for doing that? are they going to tax us for just owning a vehicle?
I contemplated leaving the country, I should have made the move sooner, I'm too old and don't have enough funding behind me, I know it sounds bad to say, but I'm glad I'm nearer the end of my life because the last few decades this country has really gone downhill rapidly

I don't do a great deal of miles. Thing is, I'm not in debt with a finance company and it seems fairly cheap to run to me for a very luxurios and comfortable car.
I used to have finance and went down the route of the L322 to stop finance payments. Best idea... and cheap motoring really. Thanks for watching.
When you compare it to a BMW, the Rolls is a much better option!
No I didn’t realise about the headlights. I’ll have to look into that. Thank you
@@ChrisEdworthy There's dozens of products on the market that will sort it.

Just insured my l322 with Admiral 70 year old with full no claims Glasgow £699. / year.

Oh no sounds expensive. Thanks for letting me know and for watching.
Thanks a good idea. Just 6 months use each year. Maybe I should run for Prime Minister and save all these old car! Thanks for watching.
Our Daihatsu Sirion is £35/year :o)
£4k for insurance, just ridiculous no one is going to nick a RR on a 62 plate, the crims want ones a couple of years old to send to Russia or Africa. It makes the car valueless TBH. I am sticking with my Rover 75 which was £440 last year. I wanted a Porsche Cayanne but the insurance now worries me! Apparently we are all subsidizing EV's which can't be fixed with minor accidents and are written off.
Oh really, that would surprise me. EVs can be a nightmare for being written off. Hopefully I'll find a solution.
Why didn’t you include the insurance and fuel efficiency as a total lump sum. Get a better car and lower insurance fuel consumption. By year two you’d be quids in, while keeping to the same budget?
Got to keep the tax coming in to fund the public sector we all love.
Depends on which parts of public sector I guess... funding the taxman I'm less keen on than nurses for instance! 😂
ditch the RR (Range Rover!
Get a 40 year old classic. I am waiting for 2030 when my V12 Jag will be free from ULEZ etc
The rolling exemption will have stopped before then.
That would be great, all the 40 year old cars with V8 & V12's. The best option for beating ULEZ.
I need to do some more research and see how I can reduce it all down. Its crazy the price this year. Thanks for watching.
Road tax on that car in Ireland is 2400 euro per year. 700 pounds is noting,
That's crazy. Fuel isn't cheap either is it?

It's the same choice I make. But I do think it's crazy. It's almost taking advantage of a group of people who love a brand. So they'll pay!!

A business man I know (London based) has had to sell his new Range Rover because of the insurance premium (he did not tell me how much)
I know someone who's paying almost £20k for 2 RR in London. It's a toss-up between high insurance or take the hit in depreciation. Thanks for watching.
Why would you need a rr in London for 😂
30 year old hilux surf 3.0td £180 insurance £330 tax 160,000miles
Thanks great value compared. I do love a Hilux
A fact check is required here.
There is no Road Fund tax in the UK and there hasn't been since the 1930's. After 1936 road maintenance has been paid for out of general taxation
It is now the Vehicle Excise Duty, and has been a general tax on owning a vehicle since 1936.
Thanks Graham, I still think of it as a road tax. As without it you can't use the roads. But it is just another general tax. Thanks for watching.
Just reset the engine light on Rav 4 see how it goes
Going to do that tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up.
our roads are too narrow for Range Rovers in North West England...
Try the L322... I live around some narrow roads. Its really not that wide. Especially compared with the newer ones. Thanks for watching.
I also pay £800 plus for my l322 super charged
It’s a lot when looking at the values!
I think its gonna be better for the planet than the RR.
Very true! Thanks for watching
How much to tax and insure the Toyota? Far more are able to purchase and run the Toyota than the RangeRover! I'd run the Toyota and be far less stressed.
£400+ in road tax and £600 insurance. Although not quite as nice to drive.
You could also include how much per hour LandRover dealers charge. Typical servicing costs. We would all like a RangeRover, but at what cost?
Road tax "used to repair and build roads" , was abolished in the 1920s, today the tax is VED vehicle emissions duty, based on exhaust Co2 from the tailpipe, the Range Rover has a very high Co2 hence the high figure.
Insurance, Range Rovers are a high-risk car for theft , 1 in 100 are stolen and not recovered every year, Insurance companies do not want them on their books, sorry but no sympathy here.
I get that... wait for the road tax on bikes next!! 🤣🚴♂️
I m paying on the top of everything congestion and Ulez on my TD6 .
Still I m driving around in it .
Labour and Khan must go not our cars .
Wow that's dedication! I know what you mean... they all have the money and government cars not to worry about an aging car. Thanks for watching
@ChrisEdworthy wonder why they don't have EVs 🤔
Get a Ford Edge-great car and under £200.00 a year.
I've had a Mondeo and a Custom. Great cars. I found the dealership servicing to be awful. A real shame. I love the brand, but they need to work on customer experience on aftersales. Thanks for watching
toyota everytime, you have been very lucky with the range rover, let it go before it starts costing a fortune, and it will
Says the man stood next to a Land Rover, if I'm not mistaken.
I bought it for the channel, but have actually used it quite a bit. Enjoying the small size and nippy nature of it.
As much as i disagree with the £710 roadtax on ya long since bought Range Rover that older Rav4 is still £415 a year, id just pay the extra iam afraid.
I think you're right!
Thanks for your comment. That is the decision lots of people will have to make. Thought it was worth highlighting.
Range Rovers and similar sized huge vehicles are not practical nor necessary for town and city roads and especially not as fashion wagons for mums doing school runs! In part the high road tax is to discourage this! But the gov should allow lower road tax for farmers and remote country living.
That's a good way to do it. I know farmers can claim zero road tax if they use it as a farm vehicle. Thanks Chris
A 1983 or earlier V12 Jag would be free to tax.
Good idea. I do love a V12. Thanks for watching.
Insurance vis Swinton on my 58 plate I pay £800 a year
That's not bad. More in line with my last years' cost. Thanks for watching.
Winston Churchill changed the rules so the Road Fund Licence money could be used to fund other government spending.
It was always going to change once the main road building was done. But it's just another tax!
I dont think £710 is anything like enough to tax that heap for a year.
Ireland I hear its more like €2500 a year. So there's room for it to go up!!
Unless you are a farmer that tows 3.5 tons and has lots of unmettaled tractor tracks and fields, so you can exempt it for ag use only, meaning no more MOT or road tax and run it legally on cherry, dump it on such a farmer whowill run it until a big repair bill will send it to the scrap man
Wow thats a good idea... I need a farm!
@@ChrisEdworthy Yes burn a few million so you can run an exempt vehicle on farm roads and no further than around 10 miles a week between your own parcels of land via public roads.
Siimple advise don't buy a car to show off seems you have a few quid if you want to drive a range rover you have to pay for it
You also forget range rover driver should pay for Luton airport
A 12-year-old car isn't showing off! It's an old car. Thanks for watching
You choose to drive a heavy low mpg tank, to which they're not exactly known to be the most reliable vehicles and model dependant highly (and easily) sought after by thieving gits.
Apart from that, I agree can't see the issue 😂
🤣 but should I really change to a Prius??
@@ChrisEdworthy No lol, wasn't advocating that either 🤣😉
Sorry but a choice of paying over £700 on Road Tax for the Range Rover and £415 on Tax for the Rav 4 means you should of really only had a Max £300 budget. Over £400 a year tax on that old Toyota is more of a rip off than the Range Rover Tax. Man math at its best 😊 £415 Road Tax on a car worth only £600 😂
Well, that's a whole other video!! Very true, I nearly fell off my chair when I taxed the Rav4! 🤣
My 14 plate mondeo 35 a year to tax
Siimple advise don't buy a car to show off seems you have a few quid if you want to drive a range rover you have to pay for it
That's my point a 12 year old car isn't for show... it's an old car. £700 tax for a £7000 car... that's 10% of the value... could be an old Toyota with a big engine. It's not showing off, it's a large amount of tax on an old car. If you want a new Range Rover then fine. £150k car £700 tax, seems fair enough.
@@ChrisEdworthyMy 13 year old Skoda Fabia estate certainly isn't for show, but I'm happy to pay the £20 annual road tax.
My Toyota is fantastic.
The Rav4 has been a brilliant will car for the month I've had it now. I see the appeal.
It's not viable to have these types of cars any longer. Labour wants everyone in EV's and 1.0 litre Dacia Sanderos.
Maybe I should try a Sanderos! Thanks for watching.
Easily get some RR s maybe not 322 , tax cost not sure but Definitely far less to run especially diesels 30mpg etc : he wants it all for £0
I get 30mpg from my L322. Its also pretty cheap to run. Thanks for watching.
Why do You think You should be able to Run a Car Cheap ?Nothing is Cheap in this Country Now! When You Can buy a Car For the Same price as a Train Ticket form York to London You Know There is a Massive Problem in this Country
Nothing is Subsidised to Help the Working Man ,Everything is Done to STOP Anyone Doing Most things unless You are handing over as much money as possible to Those in Power!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
We need to rethink things. Lower taxes, and opportunities for people to succeed. Small government, so we don't need to raise taxes to pay for their inefficiency.
2500 to tax that in Ireland
Painful. I'll stick to the UK and just pop over for Guinness and Whisky!! Thanks for watching.
Save you the bother… You’d run a nice Kia Sorento for that money and year two it’d be 20% of the cost.. done.
Project Nigel is looking 👀 good with a haircut and shave 😂
Project Nigel is going very well. It's done about 1000 miles so far!
Social economic Forums, basically a knobbley stick from behind and you have to say thanks
😂 Thanks for the comment.
Get a blue badge, tax it as disabled, free road tax,
Great idea... but unless my looks count as a disability I don't think I'd qualify!! 🤔
you dont want a toyota , unreliable pice of japanese , you want to buy german the vw golf r estate v7.5 , you have all the trimmings and 4 wheel drive , its a sleeper but when you put it in race mode boy it opens up taps lol , dont say i never told you . shhhhhhh.
they quoted me 16k on a range rover . i said NO NO NO .
Sounds like a lot of undercover fun. Thanks for watching!
@@ChrisEdworthy your welcome.
Move to France, no car tax, no telly licence, oh sorry, l forgot, we left the EU to have our own laws and therfore a cheaper way of life.
🤣 move to France and sit in the sun drinking some fine wine... that sounds good to me!!
and other EU countries don't tax cars heavily then??
I don't think they have a luxury car tax on top of normal car tax and l have yet to see roads with huge pot holes in the EU.
You are paying top wack for a rubbish service.
Well, someone's got to pay for the government freebies.

@@ChrisEdworthy Ha, that's how collections start 😀
I have a 2011 RRS SC. Love the car, owned quite a while now. No problems what so ever.
Road tax is a joke. But for what its worth I will wait for it to go bang and bin it.
No car is as comfy for me, and ive tried a few.... keep your RR you will regret it if you sell it.

So time for the well off to join the rest of us struggling car owners to keep our cars on the road welcome to party
My little Rav4 is over £400 Road tax. Road tax for the rich with EVs or £100k new cars doesn't really affect them. It's another tax targeting the average working person who can't afford a new car in the first place.
