  • This video contains Zach's Story, a list of his best times in different events and skill footage of Zach swimming the 50 yard in three different strokes.
Zach Zerweck is a 17-year-old Special Olympics Gold Medalist in swimming and skiing and has Down Syndrome. He trains 5-7 days a week with a private coach for stroke instruction, on a summer team, and is currently swimming for his high school team. Zach and his family are requesting an official invitation as a swimmer in the 2014 National Special Olympics and the 2015 International Special Olympics. Zach is so much more than a participant in Special Olympics. He trains year round and turns to sports to set goals, have fun, and be an outstanding athlete despite having Down Syndrome.
John Zerweck (Zach's father) has been instrumental in pushing Zach to be has high functioning as possible allowing Zach to excel in swimming, skiing, school, and life in general. John is fighting a difficult and quite possibly fatal battle with renal cell carcinoma. He has had a recent dramatic decline in his health status which has caused the family to step up their efforts to fulfill a dream of John and Zach.

That's why when I'm older, I plan to go to Indonesia to adopt a cognitively disabled child, Rahab Wu, and put her in Special Olympic Swimming (Women's).
